Look Away, Hywel - There's Snow!

Despite the snowfall on the high peaks during the night it turned out to be a lovely sunny day, so we decided on a short pre-lunch stroll up to the next village and back.

The views were amazing! Somehow the snow seems to highlight all the surrounding area and adds a magic all of its own.

Even the view down to the valley floor with its winding road looked prettier than usual:

We reached the mirador (look-out point) and wandered a little further towards the village, stopping to look at the pruned vineyard when we heard a snuffle behind us. We turned slowly and saw this standing stock still watching us:

Our hearts were in our mouths as it slowly walked towards us as we’d heard that a couple of wolves had been seen in the area lately, but it turned out to be one of the huge Mastin dogs indiginous to this area and used to guard flocks of sheep. We heaved a BIG sigh of relief as he ignored us and just ambled past.

Then we hurried home for lunch – just stopping VERY briefly to take a quick shot of these emerging Hellebores.

I think we’ll stay in now ……!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your comments guys. It was a bit scary for a few seconds, Mavis - until we realised what we were looking at. With the larger animals coming further down the mountains for the duration of the cold weather we'll give the strolls a miss! ;o)

I think it would be a good idea to stay in Nariz, and I would not be stopping to take picture's of Hellebore's! :-)

I cant imagine a wolf walking down the road, just shows how much nearer to nature you are there nariz, has anyone been hurt by one near you?

You live in gorgeous surroundings Nariz, your photo`s are stunning, I too would have balked at the size of that fellow appearing out of the blue like that, lol...

Some lovely photos there, Nariz! The very first one of the view over to the mountains is stunning! When will we be able to take - & post - 3D photos as easily as we take 2D ones? THEN we will really sit up & take notice of views like this! I always find them disappointing in 2D!

Lovely blog, Nariz, and spectacular views. Honestly, you could be living just up the road from us!
We have exactly the same hellebores growing just up the road, and the usual rumours of wolves being seen round here, too. I truly think any self-respecting wolves would be far too nervous to approach as close as this! We would be far more likely to see wild boar, which are amazingly and scarily big seen close up, and are far more dangerous than we care to think about. Do you get any of those where you are?

Gorgeous to see snow-capped mountains, Nariz. And a relief that the "wildlife" wasn't too wild. Closer to home, I have one of those Hellebores flowering in the garden . . . and two foxes out there too the other morning!

Thanks Lincslass. No people hurt, Sticki, but several sheep were killed in that village, despite these big Mastin dogs supposedly being in charge! They usually wear a mediaevel-looking wide leather collar studded with nails to protect their throats - horrendous-looking things! I think this one must have been on his lunch-break. ;o)

You're right, Balcony. I often don't bother to take photos of the mountains because the results are just silly! But then I only have to look out of my windows, or take a short stroll to get my mountain-fix.

Jan, we have only been really close to wild boar when they are dead (compliments of our neighbour - and very tasty) but have seen them roaming through nearby meadows, and once came upon a youngster snuffling around on a mountain track with its back to us. The sound of my camera's mechanism startled him to rush off, but we were more scared by the ensuing crashing sounds in the forest all around us - we wonder just how many there had been!!!!!

Sheila - I don't grow hellebores as they're growing all around - only the one variety of course. Good that foxes are not as dangerous as wolves!

Nariz, we just have two rules round here, especially in the springtime - never go walking without a stout stick, and never get between a Mamma boar and her bimbo!

I think there are wild boars in the forest of dean, not far from here ~ the babies are quite pretty arent they?

19 Jan, 2012

The REALLY little ones are very dinky - all spotty and stripey, I believe, We've never seen them that young, though. Forest of Dean? I suppose they must be escapees, then. I know they have been semi-farmed in recent years in the UK.

The locals are never seen without a stout stick on their walks - it's a habit we have yet to set into our brains! The rule here is - never go out without a carrier bag, as you never know what you'll find - depending on the time of year of course. I've come back from walks with wild stawberries, chestnuts, a wild thyme plant, a shuttlecock fern, tiny daffodil plants and hazelnuts.
