Crocosmias - I just love them!

I have been out this week to a gc and decided to add some later colour to the garden borders. Still lots of late colour out there but I am always looking to add more.

I was pleased to find some different Crocosmia to the ones I have already in the garden.

I have ‘Lucifer’ who is magic in the big border. He has been in there now for a number of years and never fails to show off.

I have this orange one which has been with me for years too. I have no idea which crocosmia it is and would like an i.d. if anyone has any idea on which it is. It is probably not a good picture as I find that my camera is rubbish with reds and oranges.

Last year I was bought ‘George Davidson’ which is more yellow than the ones I have

When I went to a g.c. late on last season I found ‘Jackanapes’ which is a two tone beauty, and flowers later than the other orange one.

I am a sucker for spending money if it is on plants and the Crocosmia bug had bitten me really hard (good excuse don’t you think). So off I went to a local g.c. and found ‘Emily Mackenzie’, she flowers later than Lucifer and is red and not as tall as ‘Lucifer’

Loving them as I do I wanted more – off I went again this week, (I have done some housework I promise) but an addiction must be soothed and I found two beauties ‘Limpopo’ and ‘Columbus’ which are looking to be yellow ones and maybe having larger flowers than the ones I have. Time will tell as they are still not open and I am so looking forward to seeing them show off. I will post pictures of them as soon as they open up. Also planted this year but not going to flower is ‘Emberglow’.

Any more ideas on which ones I can add as I must, just must have more! lol.

Hope you are all enjoying the late sunshine (if you are getting sunshine), commiserations if you are not.

What a lovely garden you have and oh my goodness you do love Crocs, apart from Lucifer I got rid of mine as they were so invasive and even spread into the lawn - shame as they are so pretty.
Can I suggest a name for yours? Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'Meteor' it looks like yours bright yellow/orange blooms with red throats.

Way to go, they are beautiful plants and multiply beautifully if allowed to...:))

Thanks Drc for the name, I know they spread but I have so far managed to keep them in check. lol. I struggle in the big border with the orange one (thanks for the name suggestion will look it up) it is far more invasive than any of the others I have.

I know Michaella when we have as much ground to fill as we do these plants are a must, I just let mine go, I might regret it one day. lol.

Drc. Have googled that one, many thanks, but do not think it is this one, mine is more orange it does have a tiny red mark in its throat. I can remember seeing something similar whilst on holiday in Cornwall in the hedgerows I am wondering if it is a wild one I have. Have looked at 'Eastern Promise' (pictures on google) that looks similar but seems to be less orange than mine. Any more thoughts please?

Planted some "Lucifer" this year, but no flowers to date. I have been told not to worry - they'll come good in the future. I have to say, if they look as good as yours, it'll be worth the wait!

They are very spectacular good and tall and when the flowers have finished they have beautiful seed heads, well I think they have so I leave mine on until they turn brown. Hope yours flower for you next season, I know they sometimes take a while to get established.

I think crocosmia is lovely, and I only have the very common one. It spreads all over the place, and I'm always pulling it up when it's in the wrong place. It usually returns because I don't get all the bulbs up, but I don't really mind - I just pull it up again! I was at the gc this morning (OH gave me lots of lovely vouchers for my birthday) and I saw George Davidson, but I resisted! I did get a hardy fuchsia, though - "genii".

Lovely pictures.....your crocosmia are lovely - can't help you with a name though. Lucifer is a stunner. I have just a plain orange/yellow one I inherited with the garden. My neighbour has a gorgeous red one - possibly Lucifer.
Looking forward to seeing your new purchases in bloom!

I must send you a bit of two of mine Mum...one is sort of bi-coloured and the other a deep peachy colour. You'd love them both. There are so many different ones now. I've never heard of any of yours other than Lucifer!

I found a web site today on google which had lots of different ones on, will have to see if I can find it again and let you know Karen. :O)

Thank you Scottish so pleased you like them, Lucifer is amazing well worth growing. I am sure you would like it. :O)

Thank you Melchi, give George Davidson a go it is a dark yellow in fact I have it all over the garden now I keep splitting it up and moving it around you will not be disappointed with it. :O)

thanks for the lovely photos Oliveoil, you inspired me to get some and see if they'll grow in my garden, nice late summer colour. i particularly like 'Emily Mackenzie’, quite dainty looking and later flowering.
although the bbc site says they need semi shade, do you find that? the all day scorching sun might be a tad much for them..

I wonder if your crocosmia is Severn Sunrise?

7 Sep, 2012

I am also a fan Olive, I love them, I `ve the orange one going mad an both the front and back, I pull loads up each year but I know by doing that it just gives the rest more freedom, I also have Lucifer and its fabulous I split it up last year so now have a few clumps, I must look out for the yellow...

7 Sep, 2012

I love them too and eventhough they do tend to take over, I don't mind because at this time of year they add so much colour.

7 Sep, 2012

I, too, have 'Lucifer' kindly sent by a GoYer, which flowers magnificently, but ..... how are all your Crocosmias standing tall without leaning over?? I have to stake mine and tie them in, which is such a shame because I love the leaves as well, and wish they'd just behave without needing restraints!

Resi, Lucifer is in sunshine for most of the day, the rest do get a little shade as the taller plants shelter them somewhat. I think they do not really mind where they are in our climate as we do not get that much sunshine lol. we have had lovely weather for a few weeks now though. lol. and all seem to be flowering well. Just try a few to start with and see how they get on. Thanks for looking in. :O)

Thank you Steragram will investigate further. :O)

Lincslass they are all very pretty and give such a lot of colour at this time of year, great to see them, thank you :O)

I love them because of that Wildrose, they are a lovely flower with so much colour it is good at this time of the year.

Nariz, I agree with you they do tumble over. I have mine with plant supports that interlink and I put them all around the bulb and also through the middle of the bunch which does help them to stand up more. Think the biggest problem is when they become dry they lean more. This year they have done much better and stood up longer because we have had so much wet weather. I never remove my supports, they do look unsightly at the beginning of the year when there is no growth about but as soon as things grow up you cannot see them. Hope this helps. Thank you for looking in :O)

Like so many others we have moved into a home with a garden with Crocosmias (did it used to be called Montbretia?) everywhere. It's never ending trying to clear it but it doesn't stop me loving so many of the others I see for sale. I plan to pick carefully (your photos are inspiration!) and in time have a collection of what can be a lovely addition to the flower garden. I really like the taller ones with really bold reds and yellows.Thank you for sharing yours with us.

You are welcome Hannahbanan so pleased to have helped you. :O) Yes they are known also as Montbretia. Some of the older varieties seem to be more prolific and difficult to remove think these newer varieties seem to be less so. Only time will tell I suppose. lol. One of the big pluses with them is the late colour addition to the garden. They help keep the flowering season going for longer. Something that I have been striving for in my garden. It starts to flower in February (sometimes January) with snowdrops etc and keeps on putting out the colours right through if I am lucky until November/December all of which depends upon the weather we get during our sometimes very cold winters of course. Thank you for looking in. :O)

It is lovely Windy, I am sorry no idea which one it is though, I will keep an eye out for it in GC and see if I can find out what it is called for you.

Meteore and Okavayu are the two I will be sending you. Just posted Meteore for you :D The other one is beside the dark Acer....I posted it a little while ago...hint of peach in the orange and it flowers earlier.

10 Sep, 2012

...sorry, Okavango!

10 Sep, 2012

Oooer I am excited look forward to getting those two. How early is Meteore and what sort of area does it like to be in. I do like them for their colours, such a variety. I went on a website and found some more that I like, Dusky Maiden, Rowallane Orange, Kiautshou and Dark Leaf Apricot they were all very pretty will have to get back to it and make my list even longer. lol. Will keep my eye open for postie. thanks xxx

10 Sep, 2012

The gardens are not that far off from me so I think that I shall have to give them a ring and see if I can go and look around they are open but only by appointment. It looks like it could be my kind of garden. lol.

10 Sep, 2012

Oooh, exciting! I like the sound of an Apricot one! This one in the photo 'Meteore' flowers a bit later than 'Okavango' which flowered about 10 days earlier I think.

10 Sep, 2012

Well Barbara, I am soooo jealous. I have tried and tried to get Crocosmias to flower in the garden with no luck at all. Do they need plenty of sunlight as ours is in and out of the sun due to all the surrounding trees. Perhaps I should try them in the allotment garden where there is more light. I love the Lucifer and I have had the yellow one once, but lost it. I didn't know what it was called. Yours are all beautiful.

10 Sep, 2012

thank you Rose some of mine are in shade/partial sunlight, the seem to be ok, some of them are shaded by other plants in the borders, Lucifer is the odd one out because he is so tall.

10 Sep, 2012

I have now posted the pictures of Limpopo and Colombus on my photograph page if anyone would like to see them. We have had sunshine for the last couple of days and it has opened the flowers up. I am so pleased with the colours of them. Hope you enjoy them too.

11 Sep, 2012

I wonder what I'm doing wrong, then Barbara!

11 Sep, 2012

I wish I could tell you Rose. Whereabouts are they in the garden? Do you think they could be too dry. Mine have all been very pretty this year and I think that is because they have had rain in vast quantities but everyone seems to have had rain so I doubt it is that. How far from the seaside are you could it be the salt air. Just guessing no idea really. Think they are supposed to thrive in any kind of soil.
