This afternoon there was a violent hail storm, with thunder and lightning, and my garden was covered in huge hail stones. The icy stones also fell in all my flower pots, such as this houseleek ~ Sempervivum ~ kindly sent to me by Gee 19. :o)

Hi Arlene ~
The hail stones were large, white and icy...
from a distance looked like snow...
... and didn't melt for quite a while ! :o(
Truffle the puppy ate lots of the big hail stones..Lol.
30 Jul, 2009
We also had Thunder and Lightening but no hailstone, I bet it cooled Truffle down.
30 Jul, 2009
Hi Pansypotter...
I reckon Truffle swallowed a bit too much ice with his tonic Lol. :o)
30 Jul, 2009
Lol
30 Jul, 2009
Crikey, that was dramatic.
30 Jul, 2009
omg TT that was bad. we did have hail stones last week but they wernt this big
30 Jul, 2009
Hi Wagger and Irish ~
My friend was driving to my house during this storm.
The drivers couldn't see out of their wind screens, so had to pull over to the side of the road till the hail had fallen....
Did you know that in Texas there are official sizes for hail stones ???
Pea Size = 1/4"
Marble Size = 1/2"
Dime Size = 3/4"
Quarter Size = 1"
Golfball Size = 1 3/4"
Baseball Size = 2 3/4 "
I reckon today in my garden the hail was at least marble or dime size :o) Lol.
30 Jul, 2009
Wow...That's huge! Did you get any pictures of the lightening to share??
30 Jul, 2009
Hi NN ~
I stayed in the centre of the house with my dogs during the lightning and thunder because I wasn't sure how Truffle would react... but immediately afterwards, I let him out into my back garden, and he was delighted to eat lots of "free ice cubes". Lol.
30 Jul, 2009
lOL...at first thought they were decorative white stones around your houseleeks! We too had a storm this afternoon, but the hailstones were only tiny compared with these !
30 Jul, 2009
Lol.... This storm was happening while the Women's Open Golf was on TV... one lady golfer from overseas, said she had a lot of trouble with Bonkers....
...please explain... Were you really over in Lancashire ??? :o)
30 Jul, 2009
Lol...No it wasnt me ! Honest ! Could it have been trouble with Bunkers ? Lol
30 Jul, 2009
That sounds more logical...Lol. :o)
30 Jul, 2009
wow huge hailstones TT, its been lovely here since lunchtime, sunny now to, we already had plenty of rain but no hail thank god, freeky weather but no sign of global warming, sounds like truffle had a ball so to speak TT, :o)
30 Jul, 2009
Lol. Sandra...
I hope Truffle won't now expect free ice balls from the sky every afternoon...:o)
30 Jul, 2009
if you see him looking up waiting then you know why he he he
30 Jul, 2009
Let's hope the hail doesn't fall down in baseball size pieces, like in Texas...:o)
30 Jul, 2009
Not at all nice weather. Have you tried feeding Truffle yet?
30 Jul, 2009
Hi Toto ~
Truffle keeps asking for Bonios on the rocks :o(
30 Jul, 2009
I think he's turning into a yuppy puppy.
30 Jul, 2009
Lol... he was okay, Toto, till you offered to dance with him over on the blog. :o)
30 Jul, 2009
Must admit I do have that affect on people. Soon as I approach them they do anything to ensure that I know that I'm not wanted.
30 Jul, 2009
You wouldn't have that effect on Truffle...
... he would adore you :o)
... it's just that with all that hail coming down....
.... he thought you'd prefer to partner him in Dancing On Ice ...Lol.
30 Jul, 2009
It's alright for him. He has four paw drive. I only have two legs.
30 Jul, 2009
Four Paw Drive ?
Is that anywhere near Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills ?
I thought this was a British dance event ?
Night night Toto. x
30 Jul, 2009
Freaky weather Terra. we have had torrential storms recently and I for one have got so fed up have booked a hol further south.
30 Jul, 2009
Enjoy your hols, Mageth :o)
30 Jul, 2009
Was that today TT ? How terrible ! I hope no damage was done :o(
30 Jul, 2009
The hailstones look huge, TT. I had to laugh at the picture of Truffle running round eating them, bless him.
30 Jul, 2009
We`ve had hail as well but luckily no thunder, rain nearly all day again, poor Morgan spent most of his day in his basket but Malik insisted on being outside..........
30 Jul, 2009
Hi Lincslass ~
Oh, poor Morgan.. I guess Malik got quite wet !
Gee ~ Your house leeks have survived the storm. :o)
Yes, the hail stones were the largest I've seen.
Those on the lawn were even bigger than in the pots....
Truffle enjoyed crunching up the ice. Lol.
Yes, Hywel ~ the hail storm was around 2 pm yesterday afternoon....
I'm sure the storm must have done some damage around the region. A few of my plants were squashed slightly but that's the only effects I've found so far...
31 Jul, 2009
Those hailstones have set your house leeks off very nicely, a pity you could'nt keep them Lol.
31 Jul, 2009
Lol. Bob...
I took the picture very promptly, just in case the hail stones melted, but they lasted quite a while...
Looks like nature is telling me that white stones which don't melt would look good around the house leeks... Lol.
31 Jul, 2009
Blimey TT - it's so hot here today I could do with some of those hailstones in a bucket to put my hands and feet in !!!!
31 Jul, 2009
Hi Terry60 ~
I wish now I'd photographed my back garden as well, but the hailstones were coming down on my head very heavily !!!
The outdoors looked like there had been a substantial fall of snow... I would have sent you some hail stones with pleasure... The odd-shaped ones would be those where Truffle had enjoyed a quick nibble...Lol. :o)
31 Jul, 2009
Yes, great idea TT, I always recommend this. The white looks good here but coloured stones also make a great accessorie.
31 Jul, 2009
I really love stones and rocks in the garden....
... but preferably not frozen stones from the sky ... Lol. :o)
31 Jul, 2009
Wow what huge hailstones TT........its not been to bad here on the south coast.... ive been watching all the rain clouds go inland...lol
31 Jul, 2009
Hi Holly....
I knew it was your fault..... Lol. :o)
31 Jul, 2009
We have had a heat wave over here..not usual for us to get so hot..Seattle got up to 103..that is a record for them..we did not set a record here..we have been hotter than low 90's but it was very uncomfortable to say the lesast as unlike the hotter states we do not have air conditioning and the like...fans have been my friends, watering plants like crazy, trying to keep things nice for the renters..lol..what an interesting life style I am now living..lol..at my daughters and going in to keep the house up between renters. No hail here TT..lol..am surprised at that..lol..we should have had it for cooling down..!
31 Jul, 2009
I'd been thinking about you, Cat, and I guessed you were into your new lifestyle. I hope it is all working out well, despite the heatwave...
I'll email you some hail stones to cool you down. Lol.
31 Jul, 2009
Crikey TT............British summer weather at it's best
31 Jul, 2009
Hi Deida...
I now really wish I had taken more photos of my gardens during the storm....
The hail stones were several inches deep and took quite a while to melt !
31 Jul, 2009
Goodness.......are you anywhere near Cambridge TT? My sister has lived in (warm!) Thailand for the past 3 years and has just this week arrived back in the UK to where she lives in Cambridge - it was mentioned on the news there were hailstones there - my sister hasn't called me yet - bet it's a shock to her system!!!
31 Jul, 2009
I'm further West ... but the storms spread across East Anglia to Norfolk, so there's a good chance your sister was attacked by some of these huge hail stones... quite a culture shock coming back to a British summer. The icy hail was inches deep in parts of my gardens !!!
Please let me know what your sister says about the weather. Lol.
31 Jul, 2009
Ok ;-) Hopefully she'll phone tonight, but she's got lots of unpacking to do. Bet she's got the central heating on tho lol
31 Jul, 2009
Bet she's wearing six jumpers and three cardigans.......Lol.
31 Jul, 2009
WOW yours were bigger than ours TT , we must have got the tail end I would say they were about pea size , I had left the back porch door open it was flooded and looked like a white carpet .... LOL..
31 Jul, 2009
Yes, I can believe it, Amy.
My whole garden looked like a white carpet...
In some places, there were lots of large hail stones floating down the path on a stream of cold rainwater... like ice bergs...Lol.
31 Jul, 2009
OMG! Those are some rather large hail stones!
Here in Texas, when hail-stones exceed about 1/2 inch we start looking for a tornado in the area. THAT is scary sized hail... :o)
1 Aug, 2009
Hi N2 ~
No tornado in my garden, but these hail stones were like thousands of mini-icebergs falling from the sky ! :o)
1 Aug, 2009
LOL.................I think we are in for some rain today...............
1 Aug, 2009
All we get is rain, rain and occasionally~more rain!but at least it is warm! I am issuing the birds with macs and wellies....
1 Aug, 2009
LOL.Arlene........down here on the south coast we actually had a lovely sunny summers day yesterday... but today its gonna be back to the rain...lol
1 Aug, 2009
Plenty of ice to cool your drinks then Tt, in this hot, dry, barbeque summer!!!
2 Aug, 2009
Hi Paul ~
Truffle the puppy was the only one who really appreciated the free ice cubes falling from the sky. :o)
2 Aug, 2009
Crikey, he's brave. Paddy would have run indoors with his tail between his legs!
2 Aug, 2009
Lovely ice to crunch with his big white teeth .... :o)
2 Aug, 2009
Beautiful meat plants, can eat Hail, hail the water can be treated cough!
3 Aug, 2009
??
3 Aug, 2009
:o)
3 Aug, 2009
The weather's been very unsettled over here too - one minute it's boiling hot then along comes a thunderstorm with buckets of rain (not had any hail though). Today it's sunny again and 32 degrees in the shade - not pleasant for gardening in!
4 Aug, 2009
Crikey, the only time i`vw seen hailstones this big was when I visited my neice in Canberra, Australia, but they do look rather decorative.
4 Aug, 2009
Hi Stroller ~
I'm so wishing I'd taken photos of my gardens with the mini-icebergs everywhere ! You're right... the hail stones are decorative... It proves that white pebbles can look really good in the garden...
Hello Frenchbean ~
Sounds like you've had some hot weather over there in Aquitaine ! :o)
4 Aug, 2009
We need the mother of all thunderstorms here to clear the air. Haven't been able to breathe properly for days, like living under a heavy damp blanket. All I want to do is sleep (yawn), sorry, ...........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.................
5 Aug, 2009
Hi David ~
Standing under that hailstorm in my garden, you would have woken up.... DEFINITELY...:o)
5 Aug, 2009
I recall this happening on tv and it smashed all the window screnes on the cars some time ago now
6 Aug, 2009
Hello Morgana...
Hail can cause all kinds of damage, such as in Texas, where the huge hail stones make dents in vehicles...:o(
6 Aug, 2009
I think that Jaderose ment that the hail stones eaten are good for coughs.
6 Aug, 2009
We,ve had some nasty weather here as well TT but no hail stones thank goodness
12 Aug, 2009
Never seen hail stones that large, could do you some damage if you were bald lol
18 Aug, 2009
Hello Janette and DD2 ~
You did well to miss out on these giant hailstones....
... heavy and huge enough to make the hairiest person bald. Lol...
19 Aug, 2009
omg they are huge....we just had more wind and rain here in Pembrokeshire
6 Sep, 2009
Hi Sandra....
I'd never seen such big hail stones...
I noticed on the forecast that Wales was due for more wet, windy weather ! :o(
6 Sep, 2009
Goodness me what a size. Yes TT and northwest is getting more aswell.
6 Sep, 2009
Hi Clarice ~
I guess your wheelie bin water butt is more than full. Lol. :o)
6 Sep, 2009
Full to overflowing and so are the others:o))
6 Sep, 2009
