My son is holding a red salamander that my husband found hiding under a clump of weeds he'd pulled up in the yard

He's really awesome isn't he Bob. They ususally live in underground water caverns, and creeks. So we were thrilled to find one in the yard ! I've only seen them a handful of times in my 48 years.

Yes Dotty it does look like some of my husband's rubbery fishing lures....lol. They do have very thin skin, being they spend most of their life under a deep canopy of trees in creek banks or in under ground springs.

Wow .. isn't it a gorgeous colour .. is it that colour to warn off predators , red is usually a warning to us ..? thanks for letting us see it Flcrazy :o)

Thanks Amy ! You're quite right too Amy . This salamander isn't toxic, but it says in my book that this salamander's color mimics a highly toxic Red Eft, whose bright color hue wards off predators.

He certainly is a dandy and doesn't he look rather over-stuffed? How lovely to live where creatures are so brightly coloured, you hardly need flowers:-)

This one certainly is a treat to find Bornagain, it's skin is so thin and soft, it's nearly nonexistant.

Aww sweet!!! I've had salamanders in the garden this year also, but mine are black with tan marks. Never seen red ones before!

Sounds cool Charlieb, I've never seen a black one before. I'll have to get out my Audubon book and see if we have any of them in our area.

O.M.G. I have seen a few lizards and snakes in Africa but I have never seen one of these, are they abundant?
