Stunning....

Ann, I'm doing a bit of research. Could you please tell me what that shrub/tree is second from the right with the whitish flowers/buds?

Do you mean on the back fence Karen?
15 Nov, 2010
Oops! Yes, sorry, I was only looking at the fence yesterday! I got some great evergreens and have planted some today! Hurray!

That is my Crab apple (label is in the garage so not sure which one and it's too cold to go and look Lol) but there is a Halliana honeysuckle growing through it and I think they are the white flowers coming into bloom....so a climber, are you impressed? + Have you won the lottery this month???? xx
15 Nov, 2010
Ah, yes, that makes sense...now I can 'read' it as two plants entwined....it looks amazing! I am hoping that my new evergreens will hopefully create a similar effect with the roses...the rose flowers coming out of the evergreens! Lottery....erm....no....feeling very very naughty....but OH did agree to the outlay for the shade garden and he definitely did not specify any budgetary limit!! lol x

that lawn looks about half a mile down! granted, the picture looks taken from an upstairs window, so that'd add to the height, but still ... what a lovely 3-d view. how high is the slope?
20 Jun, 2011
I should work out the incline Fran but I am 5ft 4" and I think the slope must be 12ft higher than the bottom garden ,it is a very steep gradiant. Not easy on the weeding front!

nods - nor on carrying large plants or lawnmowers up and down! it looks like a 1-in-1 gradient.
I planeed, when I got my slope installed in my huge garden, to have it ramped; a zig-and-zag path with a terrace on each side so all plants would be accessible and moving things up and down could be done by trolley - of course, that'd take up a lot of space, but with overhanging plants on the upslope side it wouldn't be obvious, she said with her fingers crossed. it'd also give room for a small seat at the turn, and give a different viewpoint.
or a straight ramp in an unobtrusive corner, with a a block and takle; hook the stuff on at the top, let it down the slope, then go down the satirs and unhook it. vice versa for getting stuff upslope
Of course, this is me dreaming, the reality would probably be very different.
ps not fogetting to excavate a tiny grotto in the slope somewhere! oh, I have it all worked out *s*

Big plans there Fran, I love the grotto idea. I have to use a flymo to cut the grass as carrying anything else down would be too heavy and I don't want to ask a man everytime.
I went out and had a look at the height before I came to work and it's more like 10ft.

still steep enough, though!
Know what you mean about not wanting to ask for help - rather, for not wanting to *have to* ask. I'm a bit that way myself. Gardening is by its nature very physical - you'd think manufacturers would spot a niche and design stuff for women gardeners - other than doing stuff in girly pink!
*s* here's another thought - go James-Bond-villain and have a secret lift in a garden shed that goes down to a tunnel to the lower garden! you could even have a secret lair down there - grins, another part of my "cunning plan" was underground storage, to maximise growing space. Oh, I've just got to get the right numbers, just once ...
