Salad/Spring Onion "Redbeard"

Salad/Spring Onion "Redbeard"

Picked our first few today for the salad bowl. Seed sown in a lined wicker basket by my 7-yr-old daughter. My only input was watering when she wasn't around. We were also able to use some of the green leaves earlier in salads. Lots more onions to come. The variety "Redbeard" was chosen to fit our "Pirates" garden theme.

The pic on the seed packet made these out to be white with red streaks, but so good to see red Spring onions! They are very "nippy" btw, compared to shop-bought white ones! Will pass on the commendations to Eilidh - gr8 "ship's apprentice" ! :-))

how long were urs in the ground david

These were not planted in the ground, Cristina, but in a wicker basket lined with hessian sacking and black bin bag. Just looked back thru my pics to get the ones of my daughter filling the basket with compost and sowing the seeds. Date was 10th April (3 months). Could possibly sow more seed again in a container, and get another lot b4 it's too late? :-))

Is your daughter excited with her harvest? You have potatoes planted the same way, right? Great way to garden.

Lori, she was well pleased, from the look on her face - but thought them too strong, lol! Planted first early potatoes in same way, in outside-in plastic compost bags studded with drainage holes, inside hessian sacks. The folaige (shaws) beginning to turn yellow now and die back. Kept topping up with compost, but still found 2 small potatoes on the surface this morning, with green spots, so discarded, and added a final layer of compost. Wonder what we will "unearth", deeper down? The edibles, thus far, have been good this year. :-))

I love this method, David. I think I'll try it with potatoes next summer as I love the little ones...steamed and buttered!

can't wait to get those "tatties", Lori! just found 2 babies on the surface last evening when watering. They had little green areas on them, so discarded. But they did look good, otherwise. Have topped up the compost as a precaution, but the foliage is yellowing now, so looking forward to see what we get. Steamed and buttered!!!!!!!! Drooling!!! ;-D) X
