Heuchera Bed

Heuchera Bed

These have grown so much this summer I am wondering if I have them too close together now.

Wow these look nice and colourful Cinderella-not too close at all-at least the weeds can't get through.....lol ;-)

Thank you Richard, its nice to have another opinion. I only decided to do this bed in the spring, and there are lots of other things in that garden at the moment, but I will be moving them when they have finished flowering so there would then be room to spread them out a bit more

Will they come up again next year Cinderella or will you need to start off some more from seed?

15 Aug, 2010

They stay like that all winter Richard, hopefully, and just need to tidy them up a bit in the spring. Thats why they are such a useful plant to have.

I love them all together like that. I only have one Heuchera, looks a bit tatty now after a good few years in the same spot !

15 Aug, 2010

Why don't you divide it up Shirley, it would probably do it good. Expect it has made a few babies by now hasn't it.

15 Aug, 2010

I'll inspect it tomorrow & report back ... lol !

Do heuchers de well in shade?

18 Aug, 2010

Yes they like shade, not totally perhaps,

18 Aug, 2010

Like a tapestry - enchanting! That makes me think about putting some of mine together.

21 Aug, 2010

Thanks Wagger. Yes they look good together and should look good through the winter too (hopefully), without too much attention.

21 Aug, 2010

They won't need any attention at all over winter, Cinders. In Spring, you sometimes find that they have risen up a bit out of the soil/compost, but you just dig a slightly deeper hole and plant them back in, lol! They also like a good haircut a couple of weeks after doing this. They are also very easy to divide into more plants, but this might take a year or two, if these are all new?

21 Aug, 2010

Hi David, thanks, I have had some Heuchera for a number of years, and have successfully taken of offshoots, plus grown some from seed, so some of those in the bed are old and some new. Berry Smoothie and Havanna and Lime Ricky are new, the others are my own from seed and cuttings. I love them, they are such a useful and colourful addition to any planting scheme aren't they. I normally just give them a bit of a haircut so to speak, and sometimes like you say plant them back in deeper. I'm just a little worried about the light colour ones over winter, like Havanna and Lime Ricky, but shall give them a little protection I think, just to be on the safe side.

3 Jan, 2011

Thanks Bornagain, I am very pleased with them, and it makes a lovely desktop picture on the pc.

Cristina, I hope they will be ok too. They should be, mine usually survive the winter ok, but am keeping my fingers crossed with the light green Lime Ricky, first winter, Have brought my baby ones indoors as dont want to risk losing them. They were in my unheated greenhouse and they froze solid but are ok indoors, no harm done.

As long as they dont get water logged they usually are fine
A quick tidy up in the spring when the frosts have gone and they will come back again as beautiful as ever.
As you all know I think they are the bees knees!
Talking about bees they love heucheras even more than we all do, so they are great for the bee population.

Hello Vicky, long time no hear. Welcome back. I am thrilled with my Heuchera and also think they are the bees knees. I have been experimenting with growing from seed, but they don't all come true when you do that do they, but interesting colours nevertheless. Congratulations on all your successes last year.

Thank you Cinderella
Good to be back but not for long I expect as we have a very busy year planned ! (I say it as if it is something new lol) we have some new tunnels and shade housing on nursery to go up and because of the weather we couldnt start it before christmas so we are behind before we start!
You can get some fantastic new colours when you do that.
Fingers crossed for the season hope the judges like our displays
We have a few adventurous ones but a bit hush hush at the moment. They are always a bit of a gamble.
Also we have lots of new varieties coming up on the website and alot of older ones from the national collection
These will be our Heritage collection on the website
I am surposed to be doing all that now lol
Better go and get on with it lol

7 Jan, 2011

Good luck with all your new ventures, I shall be watching the website for all your news.

Don't take the bubbles to Malvern! Let us know when new catalogue ready:-)

7 Jan, 2011

Hello - what a beautiful collection of Heucheras!

Can you tell me what the one in the bottom left is please?

Also, how old are these plants now - I've just bought 6 varieties and plant to make a heuchera bed, similar to this.....

Obviously I need to plant them in such a way that they have room to grow into something like what you have now! :-)

Thank you in advance!

15 Apr, 2011

Hello Chilekat,

Thank you for your lovely comments on my Heuchera bed. The one bottom left is 'Marmalade'. These ones are about two years old, and they are too close together on the photo, I have now taken out the green one next to Marmalade to give more space. They can get quite big, and after the winter you need to tidy them up a bit by taking off some of the underneath tatty leaves.

Good luck,
