With the colder air now the plants are trying to go to seed. I have a 18 inch sunflower in my trough in the front where a bird has dropped a seed. The flower is about daisy size. LOL

oh no!! our weather makes you despair sometimes doesnt it.

It's certainly colder this August than it has been for a long time. Plants grown in the greenhouse (tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers have done well this year. My perenial wallflower cuttings and pink cuttings have rooted and in a weeks time I am going to take cuttings from the geraniums and fuchias. I could go and buy plants next year but I enjoy looking after the cuttings and seeing them grow. Doesn't mean to say if I see another variety next year I won't purchase it though! LOL

Is it too late to take wallflower cuttings Linda? I've got bowles mauve and some fantastic variegated ones whos names I can't remember at the moment, they have lovely salmony and lilacy flowers. If it's not too late, how do I take them lol?:-)

Hi Bornagain. I only did mine just over a couple of weeks ago. Have a go. I try to pick out good strong shoots that are from the bottom of the plant that seem to have no shoots on yet. Cut off just below a leaf joint and take off about four to five leaves. If you can see a small flowerhead coming nip it off. plant into potting compost in a 3 to 4 inch pot and water in then leave in greenhouse of conservatory window. water when necessary but don't overwater. I am going to do my geraniums next week. JUst done some spiderplant cuttings as they have been outside in pots and looked good all summer.

I did the same as Linda,last year,Ba,and they take so easily.I just left mine in the coldframe,..good luck..:o)

Thanks, must get some potting compost, think Wilkinsons has it, I'll try and get there today. Do I keep them indoors til spring as I don't have a cold frame or greenhouse, but my garage is quite light?:-)

The garage may be too cold BA especially if we have a winter like we did last year, but if you have a windowsill (Kitchen bedroom bathroom may be better.) Have a go at some fuchia cuttings or geraniums. I would keep them inside until the springtime. I generally put mine outside for the daytime for about 3 - 4 days before actually planting them into the pots or flowerbeds where they are to go for the summer. About 2nd week in May, just after the expected frosts have finished.

I think your Wallflowers should be fine,in the garage,Ba..seeing as it is light..they should be well rooted by then,and they are very hardy anyway...we buy bare rooted Wallflowers in late summer/early Autumn,and they survive ok...I don't know if Bowles Mauve are the same,as I've never had one..did it come through the winter ok? If so,I would go for it..:o)

Yes Bloomer, it's supposed to be perennial, but short lived. Linda, I do use the small bedroom, laughingly called the office by me, for plants over winter, I thought it might be too hot for erysimum though? Maybe just for rooting? I went to Wilkindons yesterday and now have cutting compost and rooting hormone, going to try lavander little lady and helianthemum too:-))

We keep the greenhouse temperature between 5 and 10 degrees (frost free anyway) so perhaps the house would be too warm if you have the central heating up.

I haven`t taken any of my cuttings yet Ba, its on my todo list, as regards the wallflowers, I never bring the cuttings in, not even to the greenhouse, I take as many as possible off the main plants and just stick them straight into the ground, same with the seed heads, I just scatter in a space in the garden, you could always try both ways, see how you get on..

Thanks Lincslass, I'll try both ways. In the summer when cutting back my physocarpus diabolo I just stuck a piece in the ground and popped half a pop bottle over it for a bit and it's growing away now. Isn't nature wonderful, always gives you something to look forward too:-)))

I have never done cuttings! can you stick any of them in the ground with a pop bottle over the top?

No idea, but give it a try...nothing to lose...I'm just getting into this cutting lark myself really. I did used to do cuttings just in water once upon a time which certainly works with fuchsias and pelargoniums and ivy...erm euonymus etc:-)

ah, i forgot ~ i have done fuchsia cuttings,.

Pop bottles cut in half,are great for little mini greenhouses,Sticki..the large ones,so the cuttings don't touch the sides..I use them when they are just planted out,in case of a late frost,or heavy rain..but I am using some now,on the shed window shelf..with Fuchsia cuttings. I use the bottom halves till they are rooted,and then the top halves,without the screw top,so they have a bit of ventilation..works for me,so maybe you could try it ..

sounds a good idea ~ thank you; i have used a pop bottle to help water a little tree sapling ~ pushed it into the soil upside down so the water could get straight to the roots.
