I do have Iceberg Costas, grows up the side of my patio, if you mean all the white in front of the greenhouse then its all the Nicotiana, they all slump during the day but hold there heads high at night, the perfume is fabulous..
That forest is very misleading, I do have a lot of trees in my garden but the hedge is only Hawthorn that runs all the way along the bottom of our gardens, my neighbours and I have all allowed it to grow very high, it shuts off the houses over the back, lol.....

Fabulous garden Lincs......so much of interest and beautiful trees, you must work very hard to keep it like that.

Nice garden and lots of space around. Also good to have the trees for a bit of protection from the wind.

It was on the BBC news just now that we're getting a second summer, flowers are blooming six months early. the trees round here shed their leaves twice last year and regrew them before finally deciding that it was winter, after all, and shedding them till late spring. perhaps your trees will decide there's time for another burst yet.

I can remember quite a few years back when we had the smallholding and a few apple trees that there was apples and blossom on them at the same time.

No doubt the plants will adapt to changing climatic conditions ... given enough time - after all, they've probably adapted to a lot worse in their several-million-year evolution.

But there has to be a limit on how fast anything can adapt to such drastic and rapid changes. Some will adapt and survive, but others won't be as fast or as efficient, and so will lose out to faster-adapting species. The boat's still rocking, and we've no way of knowing what's still going to be aboard once it's settled down again.

My friend's nan used to say "it's all them rockets they keep sending up interfering with the weather!" Climate change is not *entirely* man-made, but we're certainly giving it a heck of a nudge.

Climate change has been around in the past but some of it has been caused by how us humans treat this lovely planet of ours too. We don't live a life span long enough to compare the changes in the weather patterns.

smiles sadly to Lindak - by the time we realised the damage we were doing, it had already been done, but faster and longer steps could have been taken to reduce the impact - but that takes courage to buck the internationl companies, which don't have consciences, only shareholders who demand profits.

"apres nous le deluge" - very few people will vote for jam tomorrow if they can vote for jam today - more, they're not going to vote to give up jam that they've already got to ensure there's some jam for tomorrow!

The seas were fished empty in the northern Atlatnic and around Europe but, rather than change fishing methods, they're doing exactly the same thing in the southern Atlantic - African inshore fisherman aren't getting the catches they used to.

As far as the sea goes in my opinion they ought to designate areas not to be fished for ten to fifteen years and let the sea bed regenerate. The only food waste that we throw away are peelings from the veg and they go on to the compost heap. We only buy what we eat for the week. Leftovers go into another meal. We are both good at cooking and make up our own recipes sometimes. When I go into the supermarket and see how much food goes into trolleys sometimes I wonder........

Me too..piles of bags of multi crisps, card cases of beer and cola, piles of pizza and ready made meals, bags of mini choc bars..thats what one young mum was paying nearly £200 for..and I couldnt see one green vegetable!

Crazy isn't it, if only they would cook from basics. They would probably say they haven't got the time, but it doesn't take much doing and once you have the basic skills to cook you're away aren't you. Better quality and I think cheaper for the diet to cook your own. I wonder if they realise how much sugar they are drinking too. Rotting teeth comes to mind.

My favourite is buying a big joint of whatever meat I fancy, cooking it then slicing it and putting down separate packs in the freezer. The mean tastes better from a large joint. I save the juices to make several pots of gravy, also frozen. Great meals for 2 people doing it that way and only takes 30 mins from start to produce a roast meal with loads of veggies.

Thing is too girls, how absolutely gi-normous people are getting, very large babies to huge mums, not just plump but FAT, the NHS is having to cope with larger people, ambulances are being adapted for big people, and because, many young people aren't looking after their health, the tax-payer is having to foot the bill for their treatment. I remember just after the war, we were skinny kids, mums and dads were slim, if you saw a large person it was unusual, there was always so much physical work to do, veggie gardening was the norm, and children had to help their parents, which they wanted to do, this techno way of living for the young certainly isn't doing them much good at all. Lol feel better after that!!....:o))

I agree with you Janey, and too much usage of the short journeys for the car instead of walking. I could take my car to the shops and back but I walk about two and a half miles at least once a day and do 2 - 3 K's on the bike in the shed. I may be in my early 60's but I still like to take care of myself too. I don't eat between meals either and then I enjoy my mealtimes. We had to eat what was put in front of us at home when we were young because our parents couldn't afford luxury food or clothes come to that. It certainly made us appreciate things.

*s* "exercise" these days is pushing buttons on the games machine or TV remote control - and kids (and parents!) don't even get the exercise of walking to and from school, even though it'd probably be quicker than sitting in traffic jams caused by hundreds of kids being driven to school while the rest of the population are driving to work.

We're a bit short of real local shops round here, apart from the mini-supermarket and corner shop - there's one butcher's two bus stops away, the baker's another bus stop down, and the greengrocer's stall is only there when the market is on. Prob is, there's no bus stop to get back, so it's a three-bus-stop walk back with loaded bags - unless I nip into Tesco to use their dial-a-cab phone!

I use the local Tesco only as a last resort - shopping locally cost more, but the money stays local - people who own local shops generally live in the area, or in the same county, at least, so the money it gets in stays local, going around the area, rather than being sent to head office in another country. *s* and when was the last time a Tesco shop assistant was able to discuss cuts of meat and advise you on what would be best?

I'm trying to make my own food from scratch - recently made my first batch of clear mushroom soup, which was basic but edible! there are zillions of recipes online - too many at times, I think (I put "bsic clear mushroom soup" into search and got three such, mixed in with about a million recipes for thick soup). I froze it in batches and to each batch I add something different to see how it goes. The prob with online recipes is that they don't often do plain and simple, it's all fancy and fiddly. If we get a recipe site in GoY, I hope there's going to be a "basic" section!

sorry, Lincslass, we seem to have diverted away from the original topic! I read that Nicotina was highly scented, so about a year ago I went to the local Columbia Flower Market and bought some, but either there's a scentless variety or my sense of smell is really vanishing, because I could never detect any scent from them.
