Magic double plant ~ not a bouquet!

Magic double plant ~ not a bouquet!

This is Skimmia Japonica Magic Two Colour, I bought it from a lovely little plant stall, where the owner is a real 'old gardener' type and is really interested in new varieties and what he can find to sell. He found these in Cornwall recently and doesnt think they are available elsewhere ~ there are two different colours of bud/flower on the one bush, one will open to lime green and the other to white, in the spring and will have a scent ~ possibly two different scents ~ I have to wait to find out.
The stall owner was interested to know if anyone else knew anything about this plant ~ I promised to put it on here and ask.

that's jolly nice Sticki. Is it hardy comiing from cornwall? I do hope so, it will make a stunning larger shrub.

have to admit - haven't seen it before... Really interesting. On the small picture it looked like a flower arrangement in a vase, lol.
How did they do it??? lol

No, never seen a "bi-colour" Skimmia Sticki. But my Mum had a Spiraea in her garden that had cream flowers and pink flowers on the same bush. Nice one.

Mmm, I reckon you could in for some plant envy there Sticki, especially as it appears to be so rare. It's a really lovely find.

I though it was a bouquet at first too,Sticki..how lovely! and so unusual..aren't you the lucky one? ..are you going to have it in a sheltered place for the coming winter ..just in case ?

no idea???!!
i could easily leave it in its pot tho then i have the option, the alternative is to have a nice little fleece cape for it!!!

thanks paul, pansy and labdancer, i shall have to let you all know how it gets on!!

spritz has looked it up and it is hardy!!!

10 Oct, 2011

Well - remember them from work - they weren't that hardy. So I would suggest fleecing them over when the temperatures will drop below 0 C. We lost quite few of them:( They seem to like sheltered position.

That's really different - never seen it before but it's lovely.

It's nice when you get a personal touch like this Sticki, with useful advice and tips.
I hate those Garden Centres when staff don't know a thing but talk a good game!

11 Oct, 2011

It's a tiny little stall almost like a big shed at a nearby craft centre. Just nice to call in sometimes.

Very interesting plant, I can honestly say this is one I know almost nothing about. It's very pretty, keep us posted on how it does :)

13 Oct, 2011

i will do Rk ~ its still in its pot at the moment ~ will be in the ground by the weekend though.

Its lovely Sticki. There seems to be a bit of a fashion for putting two vars on the same rootstock..they do it with fruit trees as well...they are clever these horticulturists aren't they! This is lovely! If your garden is sheltered I'm pretty sure it will be fine in the ground. I have all my Skimmia in the ground here, to no ill effect. The little variegated ones however...they are much more tender...I can't keep them at all! I look forward to seeing how it does in the spring...the scent from mine was just heaven this spring....a bonus I hadn't expected as I didn't know they were scented!

16 Oct, 2011

No I hadnt realised that either ~ Im looking forward to that.

16 Oct, 2011

Oooh, it's really lovely and very powerful!

16 Oct, 2011

oh thank you, thats great news

16 Oct, 2011

Lovely!

17 Oct, 2011

I too was about to compliment you on your flower arranging lol! Unusual!! (the plant - not you doing flower arranging)

27 Oct, 2011

its got one or two flowers open now! makes flower arranging easy when they come ready in a pot!!!

27 Oct, 2011

Im all for that considering Im totally hopeless at doing it myself!
