there is one at the back that had just been born, its an amazing event ~ the whole village seems to take part, tractor and trailer rides up to the sheds; teas in the village hall!!!

you cant imagine babies being taken from the maternity ward like this can you??!!!
i imagine they are dragged along so she can follow the scent?

Yes! Saw that one born too, it was odd that some seemed much yellower than others, even siblings were very different.

I remember some lambs being born dead and the ewe could not be left without a baby so the shepherd would skin the dead one and fit the fleece over one from a mother with two or three babies and it was fostered out to the one with no baby. Because it smelled like her own lamb she accepted it. Sounds like a lovely village was that in this country Sticki.

It was in Overbury, Gloucestershire today SG.

You obviously had a great day out. Thanks for sharing it with us. I hope the cream teas in the village hall were good.

Do you see how all the other ewes are looking on...!!
wonderful time of year..

some ewes seemed to help out ~ licking the baby lambs as they were born and the mothers didnt mind!!

glad these are indoors, read so much about shepherds having to battle through blizzards to find the sheep and tend newborns.
it does look rather an undignified way to be introduced to the world, though.

they are born, seemingly easily straight onto the straw with no help. These two were being moved into the next pen to make enough room for the ewes who had not yet given birth. I think they were carried this way to ensure the mum followed.
These were high on Breedon Hill in the Cotswolds.
The sheep in the Lake district [Herdwicks] are often born out on the fells i think.

i know thats the way they hold them but i dont like it , i would hold them properly and take them to the pen lol,
and tuck them in haaha
23 Apr, 2012
:-) dont think they would stay tucked in for long sanbaz!!
23 Apr, 2012
I had to look twice at the lamb in his right hand - the way the head's flopping back made me think it was either dead or just a skin!
23 Apr, 2012
no it was fine but literally minutes or even seconds old!!
23 Apr, 2012
I've never seen a lamb being born Sticki, it must have been lovely.Makes you wonder how they manage without ultra sounds pain relief and grandmas.
25 Apr, 2012
