Can you say what benefit they will be to your pond? and will you have to control the numbers?

Excess snails could be given to me! And as for the lone oyster......?

Well Drc, I'm no expert but my assumption is they they will eat the algae as at the mo the water isn't moving. I have noticed a patch on the side where one snail is and he seems to have eaten the algae there. i am not sure if they will reproduce but if they do....lulu!!!
Oliver the oyster is there purely because Lulu hasn't got one ; )

I am planning at some stage to have a water feature that flows into it but for now my little helpers will have the run of the place

How about one of those little bamboo water pipes to feed into the water?

Hmm nice idea sticki, just an update noticed a couple of big patches now that have had the algae eaten away, the boys are working well

Excellent! Keep them working!
I wonder what would be snail incentive?! Dangle a hosta or water equivalent in front of them?

Did you notice the little scrubbing brushes that came attached to their tails??

Lovely to see the watersnails and your freshwater oyster. Used to see these in the large lake at Woollerton but haven't seen an oyster for a long time. The snails should reproduce very well for you Stevie, we used to have both species in our large pond when we lived down the road. SOmetimes we had to do a clean up of the algae and when a complete clean up on a rare occasion we would catch the fish and put them in the water butt. Empty the pond to about a foot, clean out the sludge, sort out the plants, fill up with rainwater from the other butt and with some tap water, leave standing for a day, then put the fish back.
