It was developed by Francis Meilland in the years 1935 -1939. Before German invasion of France he sent cuttings to friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the United States to protect the new rose. It is said, that it was sent to the US on the last plane available before the German invasion, where it was safely propagated by the Conard Pyle Co. during the war.
In Central Europe the rose has been sold after WWII as Gloria Dei. My godfather got several bushes from German priests.

What a shame, - mine just seems to keep on getting bigger & I have to cut it back, quite drastically sometimes!!! Do you cut yours back? I think it does them good.
I usually give the roses a feed of Fish, Blood & Bonemeal early on in the Spring, they seem to do well on that, because it is slow-release feed. Might be worth a try! :)

I always thought that they looked like they were lit from within. Peace or Gloria Dei...it is delightful.
