I was supposed to go to work, but told them yesterday if they'd got the weather forecast right I won't be coming.
There is a red warning for my area - I didn't want to risk to be stuck on the road somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

only small drifts ~ biggest i saw was 8" tall ~ same as the snow level i know but the wind had blown it from bare ground.

we spell the distance that measures just over a yard as 'metre'!!!

but we have nasty things called meters that gobble up your money when you park by them!

The worst thing with you is driving on the opposite side to the rest of Europe. I was several times almost knocked down on crossover because I always looked in a wrong direction first, lol. Meter is just benigh thing.

I am almost sure, Continent was settled first, as settlement of prehistoric man was directed from Africa and Middle East to the Continent and thet to the northwest :))

In reply Sticki (better late than never!) We live in a small village between Hatherleigh and Holsworthy and are 10 miles from Okehampton - which had a lot of snow today by the way!

Hm, I live close to Old Roman routes, which are still visible along the Danube. As here was built a big wall Limes Romanum, which you can find on internet too. These roads have perfect structure - smooth and slightltly sloped in order rain water runs quickly out of the road. One side of the road has narrow channel for wheels. It is right side.

I would say, Sticki, that these proves just that at least Romans in that part of Britain drove on the left.
When I was googling right side driving it showed me this sort of "folk poetry":

I have no idea, although - these were not Roman roads. But I can ask my cousin, who is historian. Roman roads had rules. Pilgrims and riders on the left, vehicles, coaches on the right. I can imagine, that way traffic was smooth, no jams :))

oh, sorry, its quite an old recipe i think, very bad for you as of course it has lard in it ~ probably a bread dough, sugar on top and raisins and sultanas layered inside. very yummy, the old style bakers make them ~ in huge trays.

I think I know this cake here under the name "hrozienkový koláč". It isn´t so much caloric.

oh thats interesting kat ~ i expected you to have something similar but i think its quite a traditional localised thing here ~ maybe its just 'old' ~ lots of people havent heard of it here.

...the bread is quite loose, one can unpick it, has sweet taste and a lot of raisins in it. We eat it with cocoa. Hm. Delicious.

I used to ride and always mounted from the left so wondered if that had anything to do with driving that way round on the roads. It came from the Knights when they wore their swords on the left side, so that they could grab hold of them with their right hand to fight. It would be difficult to swing the leg over the saddle to mount otherwise, trying to swing a sword over as well.
The only time I used to mount on the right was when I once had a horse that misbehaved and it hadn't been ridden for a while. When it settled I mounted from the left. It was an ex racehorse.
