that's more than I have...
I was supposed to go to work, but told them yesterday if they'd got the weather forecast right I won't be coming.
There is a red warning for my area - I didn't want to risk to be stuck on the road somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
18 Jan, 2013
Masses isnt it!!! Have never seen this much here before! Good thing I didnt drive to devon I think! You should see the whole table ~ like a giant iced cake! Its so pretty! Amber warning here ~ and its lovely and quiet ~ hardly any cars!
18 Jan, 2013
according to this - I am in the area worst hit by the weather:(

i may have asked you this before but whereabouts in devon are you wildrose?
18 Jan, 2013
Do you have drifts too?
18 Jan, 2013
only small drifts ~ biggest i saw was 8" tall ~ same as the snow level i know but the wind had blown it from bare ground.
18 Jan, 2013
We've had one or two at a couple of feet. Sluggy likes jumping them!
18 Jan, 2013

We have one meter of snow in the garden now. Yesterday night we had also small earthquake :)) Just 3d degree of Richter scale. And I have impression all glasses in my room jingled, but then I thought -maybe the ghosts have their celebration :)))

18 Jan, 2013
Meter is basic unit of length adopted under the SI, right?
Just curious, why did you put METRE.
18 Jan, 2013
You have fantastic question Sticki, lol. Yes, now all is safe as much as it can.
18 Jan, 2013
we spell the distance that measures just over a yard as 'metre'!!!
but we have nasty things called meters that gobble up your money when you park by them!
the americans spell the distance meter!
18 Jan, 2013
My teachers were mostly Americans, so that´s why it came strange to me.
18 Jan, 2013
it is very confusing!
18 Jan, 2013
I don´t think so. It broadens your horizons.
18 Jan, 2013
maybe but a lot of our spelling makes no logical sense whatsoever!
18 Jan, 2013
The worst thing with you is driving on the opposite side to the rest of Europe. I was several times almost knocked down on crossover because I always looked in a wrong direction first, lol. Meter is just benigh thing.
18 Jan, 2013
We like to be different! We like being an Island race! I wonder which was the first to be used ~ us driving on the left or you on the right?
18 Jan, 2013
I am almost sure, Continent was settled first, as settlement of prehistoric man was directed from Africa and Middle East to the Continent and thet to the northwest :))
Also, I have read a population study which says in the UK whites are already minority. I don´t know how serious this study was, of course.

Its very interesting ~ I found this:
'In the past, almost everybody travelled on the left side of the road because that was the most sensible option for feudal, violent societies. Since most people are right-handed, swordsmen preferred to keep to the left in order to have their right arm nearer to an opponent and their scabbard further from him. Moreover, it reduced the chance of the scabbard (worn on the left) hitting other people.
Furthermore, a right-handed person finds it easier to mount a horse from the left side of the horse, and it would be very difficult to do otherwise if wearing a sword (which would be worn on the left). It is safer to mount and dismount towards the side of the road, rather than in the middle of traffic, so if one mounts on the left, then the horse should be ridden on the left side of the road.
In the late 1700s, however, teamsters in France and the United States began hauling farm products in big wagons pulled by several pairs of horses. These wagons had no driver's seat; instead the driver sat on the left rear horse, so he could keep his right arm free to lash the team. Since he was sitting on the left, he naturally wanted everybody to pass on the left so he could look down and make sure he kept clear of the oncoming wagon’s wheels. Therefore he kept to the right side of the road.'

I like that Homebird ~ maltese in the shade ~ very sensible!
18 Jan, 2013
In reply Sticki (better late than never!) We live in a small village between Hatherleigh and Holsworthy and are 10 miles from Okehampton - which had a lot of snow today by the way!
18 Jan, 2013
oh, ok ~ thanks wildrose ~ mum lives in budleigh salterton ~ they dont have any snow but she says its very cold. doesnt look as if i will be visiting tomorrow either.

Hm, I live close to Old Roman routes, which are still visible along the Danube. As here was built a big wall Limes Romanum, which you can find on internet too. These roads have perfect structure - smooth and slightltly sloped in order rain water runs quickly out of the road. One side of the road has narrow channel for wheels. It is right side.
18 Jan, 2013
oh dear ~ that theory cant be right then ~ unless that channel was forged later?
18 Jan, 2013
Of course...Sticki, the same furrow was uncovered in Austria, germany, Italy. Do you they all are swindlers?
18 Jan, 2013
oh sorry ~ another quirky word ~ i meant forged as in made ~ not forged as in cheated.
18 Jan, 2013
all the web sites i look up are saying the same thing [as above] but does this help ~ regarding the ruts in the road:
'Walters found a track into the old Roman quarry at Blunsdon Ridge.
The track was only used for bringing stone from the quarry to a major Roman temple being built on the nearby ridge (near Swindon in England), and then fell out of use, so it is very well preserved. And since the carts went in empty and came out laden with stone, the ruts on one side of the road are much deeper than they are on the other. The conclusion: Romans drove on the left.'
18 Jan, 2013
I would say, Sticki, that these proves just that at least Romans in that part of Britain drove on the left.
When I was googling right side driving it showed me this sort of "folk poetry":
'The left of the road is for cowards,
And those who are prone to take fright.
The right of the road is for Frenchmen,
And drunkards adrift in the night.
So hey diddle, diddle,
I'll drive in the middle...'
LOL.
19 Jan, 2013
I add a documentary film on Carnuntum, the old Roman town on the Danube, which I mentioned and close to which I live.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTbHg6-oV-Q
19 Jan, 2013
Good film, it's interesting. Makes the Danube look like the Amazon!
I had another thought......on which side of the road do you think Hannibal's elephants crossed the Alps!?!?
19 Jan, 2013
I have no idea, although - these were not Roman roads. But I can ask my cousin, who is historian. Roman roads had rules. Pilgrims and riders on the left, vehicles, coaches on the right. I can imagine, that way traffic was smooth, no jams :))
19 Jan, 2013
good idea but were they all going in the same direction ~ 'all roads lead to Rome'???
19 Jan, 2013
Here is more information on Carnuntum. There was uncovered the large gladiator school in Roman Empire.

I hope this isn't going to be as bad as 2010 as we were house bound here for 4 weeks!
19 Jan, 2013
4 weeks? thats like a siege rose! its very hard to know exactly what to expect, i just walked to the local shop ~ to have a look round really ~ but it was shut!!!! walked on to the next one ~ bought a very naughty cake that i love ~ 'lardy cake'
thanks kat ~ i shall have a look at that ~ seems i am learning a lot of history ~ but its interesting.
19 Jan, 2013
What on earth is a " lardy" cake Stickie?
19 Jan, 2013
oh, sorry, its quite an old recipe i think, very bad for you as of course it has lard in it ~ probably a bread dough, sugar on top and raisins and sultanas layered inside. very yummy, the old style bakers make them ~ in huge trays.

:))
Lardycakes...It was a big switch from gym.
19 Jan, 2013
oh dear! yes ~ but i did walk to fetch it ~ is that acceptable?
i have a photo of it now ~ shall i put it on?
19 Jan, 2013
this might be better:

19 Jan, 2013
I think I know this cake here under the name "hrozienkový koláč". It isn´t so much caloric.
19 Jan, 2013
oh thats interesting kat ~ i expected you to have something similar but i think its quite a traditional localised thing here ~ maybe its just 'old' ~ lots of people havent heard of it here.
19 Jan, 2013
...the bread is quite loose, one can unpick it, has sweet taste and a lot of raisins in it. We eat it with cocoa. Hm. Delicious.
19 Jan, 2013
oh dont tempt me ~ i bought two pieces ~ one is meant to go in the freezer for another day .............but it hasnt got in there yet!
19 Jan, 2013
I used to ride and always mounted from the left so wondered if that had anything to do with driving that way round on the roads. It came from the Knights when they wore their swords on the left side, so that they could grab hold of them with their right hand to fight. It would be difficult to swing the leg over the saddle to mount otherwise, trying to swing a sword over as well.
The only time I used to mount on the right was when I once had a horse that misbehaved and it hadn't been ridden for a while. When it settled I mounted from the left. It was an ex racehorse.
24 Jan, 2013
Lulu might know about riding racehorses!!!
