A mown path through long grass

A mown path through long grass

I love this effect . . . wanted to do it for years, and OH has finally agreed :))

Oh, wonderful! I'd love a lawn big enough to do this. Well done on your perseverance Sheila :)

Love the idea Sheila.

I might try this next year, once the creeping buttercup is a bit less.

That looks really lovely! It adds an extra dimension to the layout - and you can keep the daisies :-) !

Thank you Angie, Klahanie, Karen and Susanne . . . it makes me smile every day!

I love this effect too and yours looks really nice.
I create one past the bee hives, mainly coz I don't want to mow too close to them after one of them stung me on my lip!

Very understandable, Chris! Thank you:)

I just love this look.

I have kept my front garden "meadows" in the place of any other inspiration overtaking me. I have slightly widened the mown border, and think it is quite acceptable. In the Autumn, after mowing it all down I am going to plant many (and I mean MANY) crocuses on one of the "lawns" because I know they will be dying down before the grass etc starts to grow. No-one (ie my neighbours)* has even commented and OH loves it, so watch this space!

*Thank goodness for solid red brick boundaries!

Can I see a wild flower meadow happening here? Less work and great for the wildlife.

Absolutely Lindak. If I had 'panned' to the left, you could have seen my real 'wildlife meadow', but there is a pic on page 4 of my photos, if you'd like a peek!

I love my "meadows". I remember reading that Miriam Rothschild maintained it took 20 years to establish a wild meadow, and Prince Charles said he could do it in 10. I understand all that - I have transplanted and sown several suitable species, but the grass takes over. I believe that yellow rattle is a good thing to plant because it weakens the grass. I haven't tried it yet. (I have to admit to rather enjoying the waving grasses - who knew how many species there are in the average lawn?!)

Yes Mel, I was also told about Yellow rattle, and in fact an ex-member of GoY (Pimpernel) sent me some seeds a year or two ago. But what I didn't know was that they needs a spell in the fridge before sowing . . . so it hasn't grown! But - like you - I love the long grasses :)

My Mum occasionally ask innocently (she thinks...!) about "the grass at the front" . Sorry, Mum - I like it! And OH , who generally notices absolutely nothing about the garden, likes it as well. It's true - it is mostly grass at this time of year, but it is really lovely! And it is very neatly mown around the edges!

The councils could do the same in making wild flower patches, as long as they only mowed along the edges.

I mow along the edges because otherwise, it looks as if I'm not bothering!

It does look very pretty like this, Sheila! It has the right effect doesn’t it! It really does make you think of long, warm summer daze..lots of buzzing bees and butterflies...

I’m pleased you mentioned it, I found it pretty quick, Sheila. It definitely does look like something everyone should try to do if they can 😊
