Our bees swarmed this morning.
My husband rescued them from the apple tree and caught them in a skep.
This evening they are making their way into an empty hive next to their old home, so they didn't get far!!

Oh wow! what a brilliant sight! I love bees and they fascinate me how they home into the hive. I think if I had been younger I would have kept bees, not now though too late to learn, memory would not retain the instructions on what and how to do it all. lol :O) but they are fascinating. :O)

That's amazing! What an incredible pic. In the thumbnail I thought it was compost on a sheet! Mum, you're never too old to learn....a friend of mine has just retired and is now going to classes to learn how to keep Bees. She's not much younger than you! Fascinating!

What a fantastic sight, not something you would normally see. Wonderful - glad they didn't stray far.

John is the one who knows about bees but I will do my best here!
I think they swarm because of a natural instinct but the weather can also have an effect. They tend to swarm on very warm, thundery days. They take the queen with them but leave the makings of a new queen behind in the old hive.
Apparently a swarm of bees works really hard in their new home producing wax etc and has a real surge of energy - hopefully resulting in more honey!!!
If you have any more technical questions I shall ask John to come on here and he will answer them properly.
The bees are behind a high beech hedge in our garden which suits me fine!!

Thanks for the explanation - that's more than I knew yesterday. My great uncle Johnny used to keep bees but never bothered asking questions when I was young!
