I remember reading that Beeches support a huge number of different species. Birds AND insects. I love them.

One of the things I have never had in any of my three gardens is a lot of birdsong. The first was too urban, the second too immature, and ditto this one....with the added problem of a flock of very territorial house sparrows. And they only make a lot of chattering squawking noise...not song. You need mature shrubs and some trees. It's something I long for and look forward to very much! I remember visiting a pine forest in Grantown on Spey. In the car park where there were lots of wild shrubs, there was a lot of birdsong, but in the pine woodland...almost no sounds at all. It was amazing the difference.

Good grief TT that's a popular tree! Have you noticed how we are waking up to lots of bird song at long last? Spring must be on its way. Perhaps the birds in your tree were all picking out a mate!

Thanks everyone .. yes it is lovely to hear the birdsong ... we have a robin who begins his tunes VERY early, and there are blackbirds and lots of cute sparrows, some starlings, collared doves and pigeons. :o)))

Its lovely Terra, evidently the favorite place to be in your area
do you feed the birds Karen, blackbirds are ground feeders, and clears under the bird station for us.....and sings beautifully pre dawn, the robins are interesting, very terratorial, one is on the ground and the other cheeky mite sits on the food tray pecking at thefat balls he can reach....
some bird friendly shrubs may help.....

It's wonderful to be able to see so many songbirds on a tree from your kitchen window, TT! I've commented to my wife as we have walked along a path sevearal times this week about the amount of birdsong we are hearing now.

it was either january or february that i took part in the rspb bird count. sat in my back garden for a whole hour on two consecutive cold winter days and all i saw were house sparrows and starlings

Hi Maisiesdad ...
I have a theory about the rspb bird count... it is the one weekend of the year when there are far fewer birds in my garden ...
... and why ? ... because many local folk who normally have no interest in wild birds, buy lots of expensive bird foods, especially for the rspb weekend ..
... and they chuck it about all over their gardens to attract as many birds as possible ... and they then forget about birds for a whole year... Lol.
