Thanx, 6d - £1 each! Thought that you'd approve of my bargains/thrift, lol! :-))
These are staying indoors as houseplants, Dee. These are varieties not available as seeds, and can only be truly reproduced from cuttings. Will let them settle into my home environment for a couple of weeks or so, then try taking cuttings. :-))
Hi Ehsanrya! You can easily buy seeds of Coleus and grow yourself. If they are for houseplants, you can sow almost any time, but Spring is best. A general, multi-purpose compost is fine. It is important to pinch out the tips of the growing stems from quite early on, to encourage the plants to bush out. They get small spikes of pale lilac flowers. Some people like to keep the flowers, but many, like me, remove these as they appear, because the foliage is the main attraction. They also make great foliage summer bedding, great for shady areas and under shrubs/taller plants. Have posted individual pics of these five plants, with names. Hope this helps? :-))
Scotsgran - This particular sale is one held the last Saturday of every month in summer, in the glasshouses (named the "Floral Halls"), in Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline. The plants sold here are mostly plants for greenhouses, conservatories or indoors, but I did see some hostas and grasses for outdoors, too. For years, Fife Council had periodic sell-offs at their main nursery at Springfield, near cupar (my parents used to get a lot from there) but these are no longer held. Someone at work told me, recently, though, that Edinburgh has sell-offs. I keep meaning to search online for details/venues.
(see my blog "Chip Shop Plants", posted yesterday for more pics of varieties grown in the glasshouses in my fave park).
Janette - haven't seen your last ? yet - lol! X
Sk - you should try some again. This year, we sowed seeds from a packet which "expired" in 2007, and still got 6 plants, from which cuttings can be taken. :-))
The colours in these are striking, aren't they, Sandra? :-))

Until you mentioned they were varieties that have to be propagated by cutting I didn't think they were a bargain at all at £1 each! When I finished reading the comments I realized they probably were a bargain after al!
I bought a packet of seeds a few weeks ago & now have a few seedlings growing in a seedtray on the balcony.

nice strong plants David. Coleus do well in the garden but the slugs and snails love em!!! I've grown them from seed and got a lot of variety in the foliage. Are cuttings placed into water and then they root Captain?

David:
You got a great deal there. Great collection!
I can use some cuttings. lol : > ) Here in San Diego my Coleus plants live in the ground 3 or 4 years before the bugs attack their woody stems...then I pull them out.

Hi Balcony. I thought that the fact that these can't be grown from seed made it worth my while getting some stock plants for cuttings. :-))
Hi, Linda! Just take cuttings from non-fkowering stems in usual way and place in pots/trays/propagator with multi-purpose compost. if pots or trays, seal in a poly bag. That's it! ;-))
Lol, Delonix!! I always enjoy your comments on how plants grow in your area. With regard to the Oxalis, and now Coleus, you must sometimes "lol" when you see the lengths we go to to get something for even just one summer. :-))

David:
Yes, sometimes it's a little funny. We grow so many of the tender plants outside all year and don't think anything of it. However, we do struggle sometimes to grow the ultra-tropical plants/trees outside here (especially plants from Malaysia and Indonesia). It's all relative. : > )
