Geoff Hamilton's Barnsdale

We actually visited this in September and thought I would save this blog for a rainy day. Today is a really dull dark day and I know a lot of you are experiencing awful weather at the moment so hopefully this will cheer you up a bit. We have been here a few times but never in September and was slightly disappointed as they do not seem to have enough staff to keep it all in tip top condition , so you will see that some of the pictures of the little gardens are not as good as they usually are. For those of you that have never been, it is worth going , but in the summer. There is a lovely cafe there for lunches and home made cakes. I can definitely recommend that, especially the cakes! Lol.
This is the fruit tree walk. I can remember when Geoff first started planting this walkway in Gardeners World all those years ago.
Now one of the mistakes I made was not to note the names of each little garden. I think this may have been the “Gentleman’s Garden” and I can remember seeing Geoff sitting in his deck chair.
We will carry on to the next little garden….
As you can see , this is the " Artisan’s Garden"
I bet you can all remember him building all of these! It only seems like yesterday !
This was slightly neglected and can’t remember which garden it was in, but I do remember him making it and filling it with low growing herbs. I think he got the idea after visiting an old lady’s cottage garden in the programme “Paradise Gardens” where he was sat at a table having a snack with her and a robin flew onto the table and pinched a bit of their cheese!
And here he is! Our dear old Geoff sadly missed and still the best!

I can’t remember the name of this garden, so we’ll carry on to the next…
These next gardens were designed and done by Geoff’s son and wife who took over after he died. This is the knot garden.

This is “The children’s Garden”
The next part we will go to is the woodland area which also includes a bog garden….
I can remember Geoff building this
How big!!
We are now leaving the woodland area and will go this way through the pergola to the big kitchen garden which Geoff did, but is looking a bit sad at the moment!
Thats my lovely daughter in law there!
The kitchen garden is on the left and the mediteranian garden on the right. Just past here is the little orchard .
We are on our way back now and I hope you have all enjoyed your day out! I will leave you with this one picture. …
Thankyou for joining me!

My daughter and I love going there, its only 5miles away so easy for us, they ask for volunteers I think Rose so perhaps with this years weather they haven`t had as much help..
Lovely photo`s, did you come away with a plant ???

I love and still miss our Geoff, he was the only reason I watched GW. but glad we have Monty now too! Lovely blog Rose and I remember with fondness him building and making all those wooden things, bless him, think Lincs is right, this year has been far too wet, even for keen gardeners!!

Happy memories I remember being brought up watching GH.
Lovely blog Rosie.

I am the same Pamg. I used to like G.W. with Alan but I went off it when Toby took over! I quite like Monty but not the programme as much as I used to.
I thought you were in Lincolnshire, Sue ! Aren't you lucky living so near! Yes, I was told that they rely on volunteers. If I lived nearer i would have loved to help them out! I bought quite a few plants home as well. How could I not! Hahaa!
Thanks Grandmage. I just don't think its been the same without him. He was a hard act to follow!
Thanks Scotkat. Friday night has never been the same since then! Even my hubby watched it!

Geoff Hamilton was wonderful on Gardeners' World.

Thank you for sharing with us,Rose..somewhere we have never been, and always wanted to..He was always my favourite,of any of them..before,or since..a great all round Gardener...A shame if they haven't the staff or Volunteers to help them,as it won't be an easy one to maintain ..

I am in Lincs Rose and proud of it, where the four counties meet, Rutland is left at the bottom of my road and walk up a slight hill, if I enter the town go over the town bridge and turn left, even before leaving the actual town one is in Cambs, turn right instead and I`m in Northants, over the years we`ve had a few issues here, especially before they decided to move the boundary closer to the AI......
A lady after my own heart, its so wrong to visit a place like that and not buy a keepsake......

I remember Geoff H. I wasn't gardening when he did GW on the telly, so I didn't watch him much, but I remember his voice very clearly. He was quite something. The garden looks lovely and I hope they get the help they need soon to keep it up to scratch. His son is on the telly from time to time and he seems very like his Dad. Nice blog Rose, thank you! :)

That looks a lovely friendly place to visit, thanks rose, i always liked Geoff hamilton.

Bloomer its right next to Rutland Water which is a lovely place to visit, and close to Oakham Rutlands county town........maybe you should have a long weekend Hambleton Hall is nice.......but check the prices first. :0))))
27 Nov, 2012
Thanks for that,Pam..I will look into it..I'm always up for going somewhere different :o)
27 Nov, 2012
Hambleton Hall is certainly different but you may have to start saving your pennies. :0))
Rutland is a delightful county and so much to do especially around Rutland water

Yay,I `ll second that, if ever you get here Oakham Castle is worth a visit, you can count the horseshoes, although "ONE " has to be high up the pecking order to have one placed Sandra, lol.......

Thanks for writing this blog Rose :o) I miss Geoff Hamilton and haven't really enjoyed Gardener's world since his days.
I remember lots of the things he made, shown in your photos ...
27 Nov, 2012
Thanks Terra, you must go and visit it. You won't regret it!
You too, Bloomer! Once you've been, you will want to go again! I'm glad you enjoyed the blog.
I had to get the map book out Sue and have a look where these 4 points were. I never realised that Lincolshire was so close to Rutland. We have been to Rutland Water before which is lovely in the summer , but not to Oakham castle. We'll have to go there next time! It wasn't just one keepsake Sue! lol.
Thanks Karen. His son's voice is so much like Geoffs. Its uncanny!
Thanks Stickie for your comments. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Thanks Hywel. I don't think another gardener could match him, although Alan came pretty close, but he doesn't do many gardening programmes now. My hubby is buying me his latest book " My secret Garden" for Christmas.
27 Nov, 2012
That's a lovely gift. I'm sure you'll enjoy it :o)

What a compelling blog Rose.
I can picture him in many of your photos and can almost hear his voice. What a beautiful day you had to explore the gardens, you must have loved it.

Lovely memories of a lovely man, never missed a program, not visited the garden, too far from here, but, perhaps one day, wonderful blog Rose.

It was a beautiful day, Chris , lovely and sunny! If only he knew how much he was missed! What a silly man he was! He could have still been here if he had listened to his doctor. Apparently he stopped taking his angina tablets and then rode his bike in a charity ride when he was told not to. He had no gears on his bike and was even offered a swap from someone with gears, but refused. This was all in a book written by his brother.
Thanks Dottydaisy, he was!

He was a twin if I remember right Rose

Lovely blog, Rose, and thank you for saving it to post when the weather is so cheerless. I have added Barnsdale to my 'Places to Visit' wish list, I have many fond memories of watching Geoff on Gardeners' World too.
1 Dec, 2012
Yes, he was an identical twin, Pamg. I have the book which is called " A man and his garden" and in it are many family pictures including one when he was a school boy and it is hard to decide which one is which! Apparently the teachers even got mixed up as well! I can recommend this book for any of you who was a fan of his.
Thanks Xela . This time of year when there isn't much to do outside , cheers us up, I think!
Thanks Julia. I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I would imagine that everyone loved Geoff!

Thanks Jacqui, It definitely is worth a visit.

Thanks for sharing Rose. I've never been a tv fan so don't watch programmes regularly but I think everyone has heard of Geoff Hamilton and Barnsdale. I like his little seating areas reminds me of Spritz s garden.
3 Dec, 2012
Thanks Scotsgran. I think, even now, he's still missed!
3 Dec, 2012
I second that.....he could impart information without patronising you and there was always bits for new gardeners and new ideas for the experienced ones
3 Dec, 2012
And I loved the fact, Pamg that he always had ideas for doing things without spending too much money! Some of the TV gardeners now seem to think that everyone can go out and buy whatever they need for their garden!
4 Dec, 2012
Instant gardening.......Geoff was a proper gardener......

I remember Geoff Hamilton well and have been to the gardens, its a shame that its getting on top of them but I suppose all those little rooms are labour intensive
I hardly watch the programme any more..........
