Agapanthus Monday July 20th '09

Several years ago I bought some Agapantha ‘caulescens’ plants, having seen a glorious display in Brodick Castle gardens, Isle of Arran. I planted them in the garden in full sun and soil with good drainage as instructed. However they never did very well giving 1 or 2 blooms only.
Complaining bitterly to a friend, she said ‘’try them all in a large pot, they like being crowded’’ Having prepared a huge pot with plenty of crocks for drainage and multi purpse compost, I dug up the plants the autumn before last and put them in their new home; but last summer only 3 blooms. Disappointed, I decided to give them another chance for this year…
Hurrah, they have done the business and produced a picture of loveliness! It really is worth being patient; and what a thrill it is when success results after a lot of waiting Pictures show their progress this spring.

It just goes to show what a waiting game gardening is and unpredictable too. Your agapanthus are beautiful and so is what I can see of your garden. I've had variable results with agapanthas - a white one which grew monstrous very quickly, loads of flowers but none of them growing upright. Moved it to a more open space, still the same so gave it to my daughter where it's still sprawling at all angles! Blue one , bought at the same time, sulked for a couple of years in the border despite good attention so I dug it up, put it in a pot and ignored it. Result - loads of flowers!! Seems you just can't win :~)
