I'm pleased to hear Joe had a good birthday, VIP football included ! Sorry to hear of your Mums fall, she'll be right as rain before you know it,Sandra. Good to know your sister is able to help out, less of a worry for you,a worry shared is a worry halved. Have a good time at the University Open Day, make a list of all the things you want to know about, it's all too easy to forget on the day. (Been there, done that ! ). Congratulations on winning a voucher, is it burning a hole in your pocket yet ? Take care, look forward to hearing all your news next week.

3 Sep, 2010

hi guys just popped on to say a quick thankyou for all your kind words and well wishes, im so tired with work and looking after mum and everything else we women do in a days work lol
mum is a little better in herself today and not as shaky and nervous,it was a big shock to her and all the family ,
dad is doing all he can which isnt easy when your partially blind but he never complains, so between me and my sister all is running smooth,my brother is there for them to for anything else they need,
will take about 6 weeks to heal all being well, mum will have to have a bone scan to check for weak bones after this, so they can treat her if needed,
so a few appointments in the weeks ahead,
missing GOY and all my friends but hope to get back as soon as i can,
i`ll have lots of catching up when back so bare with me,
many thanx to you all and take care, cya soon and happy gardening ;o)) xx

3 Sep, 2010

Pleased your Mum is on the road to recovery, Sandra,I think the shock is sometimes as bad as the injury itself. It's good you have siblings to help you, at least you can have some sort of rota for things. Bone density scans are painless, my Mum had an ultrasound scan, just sat in a chair and didn't even know the test had finished ! Keep smiling and have a good 'Open Day' !

3 Sep, 2010

I agree with Shirley, sometimes the shock is as bad or even worse than the injury, but I'm glad Mam is on the mend. Love to you all. :o))

3 Sep, 2010

Listen, you lot - all you females, specially over 50, PLEASE, if you're not taking it already, start taking Vitamin D (holland and barrett) and minimum 500mgs calcium daily. And if you smoke and drink a lot of tea, take Vitamin B complex, 25mg, at the same time. Unless you take high dose Cod Liver Oil already, which converts to Vitamin D anyway.
We're all generally short of Vitamin D, and it protects your bones, so don't hesitate to start now if you're not taking any currently - especially if you live in the North, or have dark skin, or never sit in the sun without sunblock. Otherwise you may end up with broken bones later and have to take the dreaded fosamax...

4 Sep, 2010

It's a real problem isn't it Bamboo :-((
My sister's got osteoporosis and i know of a few others too ...... v bad news :-(

4 Sep, 2010

And now there's a lot of noise being made by medical scientists about Vitamin D - the government's thinking of fortifying milk with it, because a lot of us have really low levels, and that's been linked to over 20 diseases, and we're not even talking seriously deficient, low levels generally cause disease other than weak bones, apparently.
Oh and the other thing - don't drink cola drinks more than twice a week max - doesn't matter whether its pepsi, coke, or supermarket cola, they all leach calcium out of your bones... drink lemonade or 7Up instead.

4 Sep, 2010

I remember you saying that now :-((((( I love the stuff, have drunk gallons of it :-((
I'm on the Lucozade energy drink now ...... any probs with that ? :-(

4 Sep, 2010

No, its something I can't remember the name of that's only in cola type drinks - gives the cola type flavour, so doesn't get used in other fizzy drinks.

4 Sep, 2010

Thank god, need 'something' to buck me up some days ;-)

4 Sep, 2010

Having read this I'm so glad I never drink fizzy soft drinks, just juice drinks. Mind you, my coffee intake is probably way too high as I don't drink tea ! Oh, I take a max strength cod liver oil capsule daily so I'm feeling smug ... lol !

4 Sep, 2010

Ha ha, lucky you Shirley Tulip, I'm not allowed to take fish oil supplements. Interesting thing about Vitamin D is it needs to be in the presence of B complex to be absorbed, not to mention the absence of acid reducing drugs.

4 Sep, 2010

Nothing is ever simple is it , Bamboo ? Am I right in thinking Vitamin D is the 'sunshine' vitamin ? Found in eggs too, something else I rarely eat, purely because I don't like them !

4 Sep, 2010

Yes you are right, best source is sunlight on the skin, no sun block, 20 minutes in the middle of the day with as much exposed skin as possible. So that rows out a lot of people immediately, doesn't it? Meat's a good source of Vitamin D though, apparently - but that's something else we all eat less of as we get older too. I just pop a pill instead...

4 Sep, 2010

Right, I'll be back in about 20 minutes then, off to sit in the garden with a fruit juice ... lol ! Not too much exposed skin, don't want to scare anyone!

4 Sep, 2010

My Mum told me years ago, the only thing coke was good for was cleaning the toilet. Neither of my Daughters were allowed it, and they have made the same rule to my Grandchildren. My Daughter agreed that if you drank a pint of milk for the calcium, then drank a glass of coke, you would have just stripped the calcium from your body. Another comment my other Daughter made when she saw me give my youngest Granddaughter tea in her bottle when she used to have a bottle, was it had the same effect as coke. But I don't know if it only has that effect with children. I remember my Mum going on about Lecithin. Can't remember npw what it was meant to do, but I know she said we lacked it as there was not enough in our foodstuffs. apparently the Scandanavians make sure there's sufficient in their soil for their crops to absorb it, unlike Britain. But as I said, can't remember what its for. My Mum suffered with Rheumatoid and Osteo arthritis, and my Hubby has Psoriatic arthritis.

4 Sep, 2010

You sure you don't mean selenium and not lecithin Lindalooloo, in terms of its being in the soil?

4 Sep, 2010

Just noticed this one Sandra, sorry to hear about your mum's fall, but glad that she is a little better now.
I have been wondering where you have been,so now I know. Hope all goes well and catch up with you again soon when you return ;-)

7 Sep, 2010

I've got osteopenia-- on the bone scan i'm at the bottom of the yellow but not quite in the red and am worried about the drugs i've been given ( i am going to talk to the gp) the 1500mg calcium supplement is now found to fur up your arteries and can cause strokes/heart attacks and only a couple of days ago the bisophosphonates given to strengthen the bone ( which do work) with long term use can cause throat / stomach cancer--- i'm 58 and have been taking it 4 years already! what do I do!!!

8 Sep, 2010

It was precisely this reason that I'm banging on about everyone taking vitamin D, Pamg, to avoid getting into that situation. Presumably your doc has put you on Adcalc or whatever its called, which is vitamin D + calcium?
I was osteopenic 3 years ago from my bone scan, but no one suggested fosamax then, so maybe it wasn't too bad, but that's when I started high dose B complex (50mg daily) Vitamin D, Calcium and magnesium (combined, 500mg calcium, 200 and something of magnesium) and Vitamin K2 (having read about it first, a new one, doctor had never heard of it). And last year, when I had another bone scan, they asked me what on earth I'd been doing - my bone density had increased and I was no longer osteopenic. But I've no idea which of the supplements I was taking made the difference - all of them combined? 2 of them, haven't got a clue. But I'm taking them all the time, though I've reduced the B complex to 25 mg. a day now. Fosamax, as you've just discovered Pam, is indeed linked with a much higher incidence of jaw cancer, but it may be that your osteopaenia was worse than mine, or perhaps you're a person with a narrow, slight build, I don't know. I can only tell you what I did to avoid fosamax.
All that said, though, if the situation changed, I would have to take fosamax, and would if I got thin bones, despite the risks. It's all a question of balancing the risks, really.

8 Sep, 2010

mines Genetic Bamboo-- my gran broke her hip then in her early 70's Mum went into hospital with severe back pain which turned out that her spine had crumbled, she'd lost Dad the year before and to cut a long story short didn't come out., I went for a scan and was in the yellow, couple of years later at the bottom of the yellow so went on all the drugs but the high calcium dose gave me a very sore mouth ( which mostly cleared up when I stopped it) and the Bonviva I take monthly upsets my tum and makes my fibromyalgia worse-- on top of all that are these scare stories in the media-- I have a gp appt. in october to discuss it all ( she's a friend) its hard for her-- and us to know what the best thing to do is!

8 Sep, 2010

do you use Healthspan-- catalogue just come with Bcomplex which is B1, 2,3,5,6,7,& 12 & folic acid and osteo plus with calcium, magnesium vit D3, boron, copper & zinc but not K2-- was that separate?

8 Sep, 2010

No - I buy B50 complex from Holland and Barrett (not timed release) and take half or a whole one depending on my mood, I take H & B Vit D, H & D Calcium and magnesium - Vitamin K2 has to be made from natto (fermented soya) to be most effective, so I buy that from a company called Zipvit - they're on line, and theirs was the cheapest I could find. I take them all separately, in other words. I discovered it was about the only way to get the right dosage of everything, so often, combined ones don't get it quite right. Boring to take every day, but beats any drug from the doc as far as I'm concerned, so worth it. If you're interested in Vitamin E, and you might be if your blood pressure is high or you have vein troubles, Zipvit's is a good one too, and a good price.
And in case you're beginning to think I'm just a sort health nut, I did all this research, and have regular bonescans, because I have to inject myself with a drug called heparin every night to thin my blood -heparin is known to cause thin bones, as does smoking, too much meat consumption, and cola drinks. I might just say, though, that the original bonescan showing osteopenia was done just as I had to start the heparin, so I can't blame the drug!
And by the way, another tip from the nutritionist - don't drink tea for an hour before or an hour after taking B complex - it destroys it. And do take it at the same time as Vitamin D - it needs B complex to be absorbed properly.

8 Sep, 2010

Hi Bamboo. Haven't had chance to come on here last couple days. You are right. It is Selenium not Lecithin. Although my Mum kept banging on about Lecithin also. I'm now thinking though if that was for Cholestral. ;o))

8 Sep, 2010

thanks for the info-- more research needed I think!

8 Sep, 2010

Yep, it is for cholesterol - and general breaking down of fats, aiding the gall bladder too, Lindalooloo. Your mother sounds like a woman after my own heart, lol!

8 Sep, 2010

My Mother had her gallbladder out when she was 40. She had a craving for lemons and grapefruits when she was having my Brother, and we all blamed that for the gallbladder trouble. As she got older, she started to suffer with high Cholesterol, so she would take whatever to help to try and lower this. I know she had us all trying this that and everything else, instead of taking medication from the doc. She used to say, if it was a necessary to take medication, then take it, if not try to help yourselves with herbals. I know she used to eat nettles regularly, she even had my Dad grow them for her. She'd have them chopped up like mint over her food, and make tea with them. I inherited her herb jars, and nearly everyone of the lids had nettles written on them. Lol :o))

8 Sep, 2010

Funnily enough, people with gallbladder trouble often do want grapefruit particularly - it helps with breaking down the fats, believe it or not. I used not to be able to eat eggs without grapefruit in the same meal, or I'd trigger off my gall bladder pain. Doesn't happen now, though, even though I've still got the poor old thing in there, not working very well. Poor old thing, hmm, could be a description of me ...

8 Sep, 2010

My Daughter is suffering with her gallbladder, and awaiting to see specialist which seems to be taking forever. She phoned hospital yesterday and was told the current wait to see him is 36 weeks from the time she had the acknowledgement letter, so she still has 25 weeks to go. :( She says next time she gets an unbearable episode, she'll phone an ambulance, as a friend of hers did exactly that, and she's getting the op done sometime this week. I questioned our GP yesterday about the wait, and was told the only way she could speed it up would be to go private. THE COST; approx £150 for the consultation, and around the £3-4,000 mark for the op. Unfortunately and sadly, she'll have to keep suffering unless we win the lotto.

8 Sep, 2010

Just trying to catch up, been on hols, sorry to hear about your Mum San hope all goes well and she makes a speedy recovery......

8 Sep, 2010

linda that awfull i was lucky in a way as i had an attack while on my first visit to see consultant so kept me in over night for extra tests to make sure it wasnt cancer,, as i have had bowel cancer, thankfully it wasnt so booked me in the following week to have gallbladder removed, or i would still be on waiting list, hope your daughter gets sorted out soon, but i think you should try that with calling ambulance, may help,
hi dotty and thanx, she is alot better in herself, more cheerfull and following dad around to make sure he is doing things the right way haha, so me and sister can take a back seat now and call every few days unless he needs us ;o)) hope you had a good holiday dotty ;o))

9 Sep, 2010

Good to read that your mom is recovering well, Sandra. I laughed when you said your mom is following dad around...she must be feeling better, checking up on him! lol

9 Sep, 2010

cheers whistonlass yes a good sign, im popping round shortly not been while working last couple of days but they are fine ;o))

11 Sep, 2010

Thanx Sand. It sounds like you've been through the mill. Last few days she hasn't been too bad, but keeping my fingers crossed for her. :o))

12 Sep, 2010

its never ending at the momen, and not all good, but keep going like you do, got a good hubby which helps get me through it all, and i keep smiling ;o))

12 Sep, 2010

That's the trouble with us women. We have to keep going otherwise we think everything will fall apart. I have trouble with my legs, veins, circulation etc amongst other things. My Daughter keeps on at me why I'm doing this and why I'm doing that, and why cook roast dinner today when you could have something quick. as the standing in the kitchen for hours is'nt helping matters. I have a good Hubby, but there, he's not in good health either, so I just get on with it myself, and as you say 'keep smiling'. :o))

I have regually made nettle tea Linda and always fill jars of nettles i've dried for the winter ... I was in dreadful pain for years when I burst a disc and am convinced this helped me .....

13 Sep, 2010

Will have to try it myself Amy, see if it'll do me any good. I had a dreadful night last night and to top it all, I had nightmares as well. hehe

13 Sep, 2010

Linda, you're amazing to get so much accomplished in your garden when you are so uncomfortable. I've heard about nettle tea too....sure is worth a try.

San, hope things are still improving with your parents. As others have said...gotta keep chugging along!

13 Sep, 2010

all alot better i think, mum and dad coping better and know i have other issues with my eldest son so cant be there all the time and trying to get things together for joe, he goes to uni on the 2nd oct, im making sure he has all he needs, bedding and kitchen basics, im sure all will be ok in the end but not easy, rain here so cant even get in garden to keep me sane lol

13 Sep, 2010

What's nettle tea good for then? And how do you make it? And Linda, you're absolutely right - I'm always being told don't do this, don't do any gardening, don't do that, I mean, the fact is, if you stopped doing everything till all your aches and pains had gone, you'd never actually do anything, because they don't go! I find they ease off and then pop up somewhere else, and since I'm not in my coffin yet, I'm damned if I'm going to sit about doing nothing waiting for someone to nail the lid down...

13 Sep, 2010

Stinging nettles have a high content in chlorophyll and Iron the young shoots are rich in Vit.C.... according to my book they are good for muscular aches and pains / Rheumatism / Lumbago / Loss of hair / Bladder disorders / skin diseases and dropsy ( what ever that is ) amongst other things ...
I wash and dry the leaves and then spread them on a piece of kitchen paper with another sheet laying over them put in the miscrowave ... micro wave for a few seconds at a time until they are crisp enought to crunch up like tea leaves then put in a jar ... be very careful , they will explode if you microwave then for to long , and Yes it does taste foul but you get use to it !

13 Sep, 2010

Thanks for that, Amy - now all I need is to find some stinging nettles... but it does sound like one of those Chinese herbal remedies that are too revolting to drink, lol!

13 Sep, 2010

you can buy nettle tea--- like mint or
chamomile-- even nettle with mint.
recently I bought a mattress topper, (not the normal one as I still get hot flushes and the memory foam can make you even hotter) but a 'silentnight' one which I can only describe as 'eggbox'--- it is memory foam, non heating and very comfortable, certainly back etc. much better but I wish that they would make a similar pillow as neck & shoulders still ger stiff.

13 Sep, 2010

Bamboo....my nettles are growing really well (darn! don't really want them in the back garden).....if you lived near you could have them...lol I think I'd go with Pam's suggestion and get nettle tea that is flavoured..more palatable I reckon.

Just thought....I've been using weedkiller in the garden so probably not a good idea to fetch any nettles from me.....don't want to be putting a nail in anyone's coffin!

13 Sep, 2010

Pah, wouldn't worry about that, by the time Death arrives with his scythe, I'll be asking him what took him so bloomin' long, has he not grasped how painful my body has become, etc., etc...

13 Sep, 2010

nettle & mints not bad-- bought a mixed box once-- I do not recommend mint & eucalyptus-- its disgusting... yeuk!

13 Sep, 2010

Oh heck, Bamboo.....stick around.....kinda getting attached to all you guys on GOY :)

13 Sep, 2010

its the damp--- always worse on damp, drizzly days-- and we seem to have had so many this year.....

14 Sep, 2010

amy
Amy

Stinging nettles are best picked in the spring Bamboo they are getting a bit past it now .... you can always put a spoonful of honey in the hot nettle tea which is good for you as well .. ...
My brother in law was often in hospital with his Rheumatoid Arthritis he had to take loads of tablets ,, when he was only 40 they moved to Spain he hardly ever has to take anything for it now ,which proves it's our weather !

14 Sep, 2010

Hee hee, Pamg, not intending to slide off any time soon, but in 15 to 20 years, I'll be more than ready I expect, and certainly ready to have a go at the Grim Reaper, lol!

14 Sep, 2010

thank goodness for that Bamboo!
