I love going to Flower Shows and the SRGC shows are very special because of the quality on show and also the small size of the plants which make a huge impact on ones senses.
The first four photos show the miniature garden class.
1st a made over fish box. How many different plants are growing in this small space?
and from a different perspective
2nd another ex fish box full of Hepatica nobilis in white and purple
3rd in a pot.
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh always put on a great display of some of their plants from the Alpine houses. This is no exception. The snowy backdrop was mirrored in real life and real time in the hills around Kincardine.
I was very impressed by the range of Fritillaria including
F. minuta
F. aurea
F. latifolia
and F. assyriaca ssp. assyriaca
This beautiful narcissus caught my eye but I failed to get its name
Here are some of the many wonderful exhibits entered on the show benches
Draba cretica
2 pans of saxifraga
1 pan of saxifraga
3 pans of crassulaceae
1 pan crassulaceae
3 pans plants for foliage
and 1 pan for foliage
and another
and another
1 pan, native of Australasia
2 pans silvery grey foliage
and another of the same
and 1 pan of sivery grey foliage
No apology for including the awards given to this glorious Trillium rivale.
In the same class number but not showing its beauty to best advantage today. Olsynium douglasii syn. Sisyrinchium douglasii or S. grandiflorum.
1 Pan native to the Himalayas
1 pan Dwarf conifer
2 pans Ericaceae distinct
1 pan Ericaceae
Section two (Classes 70 – 85) of the show is restricted to exhibitors who have won less than 25 First prizes at any SRGC show.
1 pan rock plant grown from seed by the exhibitor
! pan rock plant for foliage
1 pan dwarf bulbs
1 pan rock plant not eligible for classes 74-83.
I still have one hundred photos to wade through so I will stop before you become bored. Enjoy. The bacon sarnies and pot of tea was excellent. I passed on the delicious cakes on offer.

Great blog and some lovely photos. Just as well I wasn't there, I'd have spent way too much!
24 Mar, 2013
Thanks Sheila... wonderful plants on the benches in spite of the weather!

Excellent selection, the Trillium is something else,I wonder if my name is on one of thoes seedlings.lol

Wishing I had made the effort to get up and go now ;) As I suspected it was a late morning! I'll just have to wait until April.
Glad you had a great day Sheila. So many lovely plants and well done to all those who took part.

Bjs those are not seedlings that is a prize winning pan of trillium! Scottish are you coming to Edinburgh or Perth? Or maybe even the Highland Show in Nairn?
24 Mar, 2013
I'm going to Edinburgh MG, which reminds me I must send your OH a pm!
Other than Gardening Scotland I've never been to a gardening show before and I'm really looking foward to it - although I doubt my purse is ;)
24 Mar, 2013
Scottish I always say I'm not going to spend more than £10 but always seem to have miscalculated. I brought home six little darlings, but they can wait for another Blog. Thanks Mg, as you say nobody could complain about the quality of the plants on show. I think Bjs was hoping his name is on one of Pcw's seedlings, as if he needs to ask. Pcw and Bjs you will have spotted the Trillium belongs to Cyril Lafong. He had fantastic plants in the show. He works full time and this is his hobby. You will understand why I'm in such awe of the man. Louisa, I find if it is in my purse it will jump in to someones hand at the whiff of a nice plant. Great when the plant jumps in to my basket at the same time lol. The mini gardens are something else Linclass. Imagine all the knowledge that goes in to knowing what to plant then the skill to get them to that standard. I'm pleased you liked the show Rose and I apologise for not sending on a bacon butty but the postie said it would never get out of the sorting office. lol. Thanks Tt, Hywel and Scotkat. Maybe I'll see you at Perth Kath. We have yet to meet. Thank you Pcw. I'll look forward to getting that beauty. It is quite different to the Sisyrinchium that I have. I take it you will have picked up on the big hint coming your way from Bristol lol.

Sheila - I'm not bringing my bank card - so the only pennies will be what I have on me. That way I can't be tempted...lol! I learned that lesson at Gardening Scotland!!!
24 Mar, 2013
The stall holders don't take cards - cash or cheques only. Gardening Scotland is different as quite a lot do.
24 Mar, 2013
Yes, but nearby ATMs do though MG! :)))
24 Mar, 2013
I was amazed to so many plants on the bench. We didn't go down, but if we had we would have struggled to take any with us. Lovely pictures.
24 Mar, 2013
Scottish so far as I can remember there is now no ATM in the vicinity - there used to be and then it went. With the result that there were lots of folk who ran out of cash. Interestingly when we were visiting Mull and needed cash we discovered a shop in Salen that would give you cash back if you spent £10. Given there is only 1 ATM on the island it was a godsend :-)

Sheila- if I don't kill them first,I'm sure one will find its way west
24 Mar, 2013
What lovely plants. Really fascinating. I am in awe of the people who have grown such lovely specimens, especially this year.
24 Mar, 2013
The plants have been growing for years Mel.
24 Mar, 2013
Scottish I made a list before I left home of seeds to buy, 20p a packet or 6 packets for £1, I was very good and checked the seeds on offer first and when satisfied that the seeds I wanted were not available then I went looking on the stalls for the plants. I bought a different Saxifrage (Southside Seedling) because there was no S. longiforma on offer. I was checking it out today and it likes to grow on chalk. Ouch. Bb this is only a fraction of what was in the show. I still have lots of photos of plants and I never did get around to other parts of the show. I've got full faith in you not killing off the Olsynium Pcw. I'm putting the flags out, I have a second Pancratium maritima (Sand lily from Sardinia) seedling showing. I do hope I can be successful with them. Mel it is eye popping to see some of the plants. When you see how far exhibitors travel to show their prize plants it is amazing that they arrive looking so good. Tell your daughter to expect you on a visit around 4th May when the SRGC Glasgow show is on.
24 Mar, 2013
That is a very good point Mg. Mel if you look at photo 15 of a class requiring 3 pans of crassulaceae the one who was awarded first place has a pot planted up in the last year, the plants are seperate and then one behind it which has been growing for probably 2/3 years, the plants have had babies which have covered the spaces between the plants, the third pot at the back has plants almost growing over each other to find room which means the exhibitor will start some of them in a fresh pot later this year. I had it explained to me by a fellow member. He also explained that when one of those rosettes flowers, it will then die off, it will need to be replaced by a new rosette. The members, whether or not they have exhibits on show will freely tell you what you want to know and a lot more besides. Louisa's pots of sedums would not have looked out of place in the show.

I don't believe you bought southside seedling. I have that in my trough. I could have given you a bit as I took a couple of bits of and potted them on.
Can you add some lime when planting. I added it to the mix in the trough.
24 Mar, 2013
Did you know southside seedling is an Ian Christie cultivar?
25 Mar, 2013
Nice plants...lovely....you would almost think it were spring time!
25 Mar, 2013
I try not to buy difficult to grow plants Scottish because I don't have the skills required to look after them properly. The soil around the front garden had a lot of dead lime in it from the church. I can use some soil from there and add lime if it does not look happy. Thank you for the offer of another one as I can always use it. The nurseries bring a lot of plants along and it is good to buy some plants from them so they will keep coming.
No Mg I did not know that. I am always interested to know more about the plants I own so thank you for telling me. The ground is solid again so no planting possible but I will get it in asap.
Spring started officially a few days ago Karen. These rock gardeners are whizz kids when it comes to producing the goods and fooling you in to thinking you must have been asleep and not noticed the good weather they have experienced. Did you bring the sun home with you.

I WISH!
25 Mar, 2013
Snow flurries here again today - there is a lot of colour in the garden but it is too darned cold to wander around!
25 Mar, 2013
And it might be like this through the Easter weekend.
25 Mar, 2013
Fascinating little world, great series of photos.
25 Mar, 2013
I know Sheila... given I now have osteoarthritis of the spine no fun at all...
25 Mar, 2013
I think you would enjoy alpine plants given your love of pots Spennygarden. I'm sorry to hear about your pain Mg. Roll on summer.
26 Mar, 2013
Indeed roll on summer!
