Replacing winter losses.

Considering the horrendous winter we have had and the minus12-15 degrees centigrade it wasnt surprising that I lost a few plants. All my dahlias went this way and I didnt get round to replacing them in the early spring. So yesterday I decided it was time to scour the local garden centres.
On my way I passed the ‘plant man’ in a lay-by and picked up these for £4 the two. Yes £2 each.
They are in 3 litre pots but un-named.
Then at the local gc I picked up a Potentilla nepalensis ‘Miss Willmott’ and Zauschenia californica ‘Glasnevin’.
I also picked up a Veronica spicata [pink form] and a Teucrium hiranicum ‘purple tails’. I have been after one of these ever since I saw them in Sprit’s plant profile. [no photos yet]. I looked at their Dahlias and they were £6.99 each.
So I decided to call back in at the layby. Dismayed to find they had all been reduced to £3 for two. So I bought 2 more. If only I had waited….. but he had sold all but 15 plants in the hour and a half I had been at the gc. So I might have not got the four colour ways I now have. They are not being planted out but their pots are being sunk into the ground so that I can lift them easily next autumn.
Then just as I was getting back in the car I spotted Salvia ‘Hot trumpets’ reduced to a pound. So I naturally had to have it too.
So an exciting foray into the enjoyment of buying plants.

the lay-by is between Beverley and Willerby in East Yorkshire. I am sure he would love us all to turn up. He sometimes has a very wide range of plants and other times very limited.
thanks for the lovely comments too.

Oh dear thats a bit too far but I certainly don`t blame you for going back ,they look really good plants, I lost most of mine as well and owing to the lack of rain I haven`t tried to replace them this year, good idea to just sink the pots.
I did get a good buy last Sat. at grandsons school summer fayre, 2 lovely Fuschia`s £1.50 each so was pleased plus it all helps the school..........

What lovely bargains! Like you I lost many plants - mostly my lovely red pelargoniums but ,happily, about six plants survived and with a little patience and weeeeeeeeks of waiting, they finally started springing to life. Meanwhile I'd lost patience in another direction and bought six new plants at the market. I immediately took cuttings off them and now my hoard is building up again. I'm going to be extra careful with them all this winter!!! ;o)

Please send your plant man down here - I'm sure I could find a lay-by for him!
What with your Nursery and him, you do sooooo well for plants at good prices, don't you! Lucky you...and those Dahlias are great. Glad you found the Teucrium, too. xx

How good is that Seaburngirl. They make a wonderful display and you know exactly what you are getting too. Dahlia tubers don't always come true or perform well.....not for me they don't.
