Just Typical!

Back in May I had a great day out with my OH and ended up at Beales Roses in Attleborough. I ended up ordering roses for delivery as bare roots in November.
I have been trying to clear a bed for them and 3 weeks ago I got the Flu and that laid me up in bed for a week. Then a double whammy of a chest infection put me back into bed for a few more days. I finally felt well enough to go back to work Monday and had planned to finish the bed this weekend.
I removed hundreds of aquilegia, 5 green garden bags of bind weed rhizomes and a bucket full of A.moly bulbs.
I did lift many plants that I have to find homes for such as Papaver Allegro, Aconitum, lupins, flag irises and Veronica spicata.
On Wednesday I came home to find the roses waiting in the porch. Well they’d be ok in the packaging until the weekend.
Then typical – I woke up to find a hard frost and an air temp of -3. And the garden? Rock hard.
At this point the normal practise is to heel bare root plants in – problem ground rock hard. So that wont happen.
I will have to go and get compost tomorrow and put them into pots for the time being. That will mean more pots on the back path and I know OH wont be overjoyed by that.
So isn’t this typical? Well enough to garden but Mother nature ensuring I cant.
Never mind I will sort them another day.

Hi Sbg ... that's good to know you're feeling better. I hope the roses will be happy in compost till you're able to plant them in the ground.

thanks for the good wishes. The roses were rather expensive but I have every confidence that they will be ok in pots. I have done it before and I will put them against the wall for an extra bit of shelter.
All the other lifted plants were potted up straight away and they are quite happy ready to go in the ground once it warms up.

Hi Sbg, isn't it just typical, we have 1 of the mildest autumn's on record, and when you need it to be mild, you get a frost, but glad you're feeling better, Derek.

Sorry to hear you've been ill. I trust your roses will be all right until you can plant them. Spring will be here before you can turn round :)
OH will have to put up with it, like you put up with his things ! ;)

What rotten timing all round Sbg but its good to hear you are feeling better even if frustrated abut the hard ground.
I hope you can get them in without potting them though as it will be a lot less work in the long run!

Sorry you have been unwell SBG but pleased you have recovered, hope you manage to get your Roses in, its sunshine, rain and flurries of snow here, dont chance going out after your bout of flu the roses wil be fine in pots and Hubby will have to just grin and bear it lol

What rotten luck, first you're too poorly to get out into the garden, then when you're removed the weather puts paid to any plans. Bathgates idea of a re-order is perhaps a good idea, otherwise PP is right, Hubby will just have to grit his teeth, after all it's not permanent. Whatever you do, don't be tempted to do too much out there, it's very cold and wet and we don't want you thrown back.

Sorry you have been unwell, but hope you are fully recovered now. I'm sure your roses will survive the weather and your husband! If we get any sunshne down this way I'll try to blow it your way :)

That is definitely SODS LAW!!!..The roses will be fine and hubby is no doubt like mine and just sounding off, I find tuning him out is good, unless my mood matches his and then the sparks can fly, lol....
Pleased you are better though Seaburn, you've been poorly for quite some time so thats your bout for winter out of the way, fingers xx for you....

I hope you get some milder weather soon, Sbg, so you can get your roses in. So typical, dealing with such things is how gardeners get a reputation for being patient. It's hard to live up to, though, when Sod's law kicks in...

still a bit too cold to do anything actually in the ground, heavy rain has made it like a quagmire. So I went in the greenhouse and potted them up. The pots are now safely by the wall under one of the outdoor seats. OH just raised an eyebrow as he walked past. He cant say anything at the mo as the masts from the boat are being re-varnished in the conservatory hehe.
Still got a bit of a cough and short of breath but hey so much better than I was. Thanks for all your good wishes.

Well done for getting them safe, a weight off your mind now, hope you soon feel on top form

The best laid plans of mice and men!

Bit of good timing there as far as the masts go anyway - you have more to complain about than he has! Keep warm.

Hope you're feeling better soon SBG.The roses will be fine, this happened to us last year, and ours have flowered all summer long. Take care of yourself, don't want to be poorly when Santa comes, he won't deliver else, in case he catches something!!!!!:-)

Aren't you going to tell us which roses you bought?

well since you have asked Queen Elizabeth, La Reine Victoria, Spek's Gold and a moss rose that I cant remember without going to the greenhouse to look.
I have a fewin pots like Silver anniversary that will benefit from going in the ground now. They all have family memories from roses mum grew back in the 70's.

Nice ones. I do like Beale's - really good range of tried and tested varieties and a few exclusives. So much better than the ubiquitous David Austin roses.

So much 'cheaper' than Austin's too, though not actually cheap if you know what I mean.

I'm glad you are well enough to be up and about. Don't fuss too much about the roses. If they freeze, just reorder more. Wait for early Spring though. You can't control the weather.
