I saw the first flakes of snow today but as I was refilling the birdfeeders I spotted the following.
First fully open snowdrop.
Iris unguicularis 2nd flower opening.
The first yolky yellow of the winter aconites.
Buds forming in the snowflake.
Heleborus buds forming.
Makes my heart sing :o)

We had a few flakes , too .
It hasn't put off the flowers has it ?
Do you think that snowdrops (the name)means that they bloom in the snow or resemble it ?

Little signs of hope popping up in your garden, so lovely to see. The pale colour of the iris is very pretty.

It's nice to see things making a start on growth, even if the weather is cold :o) It gives hope ...

I found my first Snowdrop had a flower the day after we returned from 10 days in Spain. When we left it was still a bud way down in the centre of the plant but in the 12 days since I last saw it the flower has now opened! :-))
Before Christmas I saw a Crocus flower in one of the three small troughs I have on the bar that runs around the middle of the railings on our balcony. On returning from Spain I noticed that it had now died. :-(( I've never had a Crocus flower so early before! I managed to get a couple of photos of it so at least I have it recorded for posterity!
Has anybody still got summer bedding plants still flowering? I have 3 or 4 Lobelia plants on the balcony that are still flowering! The balcony is quite exposed & they have no special protection, one is a very pale blue & has been growing on the balcony railing for months. It's a self seeded plant. Lobelia come up like weeds (albeit, lovely weeds!) for me, they are constantly germinating in my pots & troughs even though I empty out the compost & remove all plants twice a year, in the autumn before putting in the spring flowering plants then again in late spring/early summer when they have to come out & the summer bedding plants take their place.
This particular plant is the most exposed of them all & by rights should have died by now after the frosts we have had! I also have a very dark blue one & this is further in the balcony & therefore not so exposed but it, too, keeps on flowering! I'll see about uploading a few photos to my Photos page so you can see them!

so nice to see some life returning to our gardens, not much in my garden here in Devon at the moment, apart from some bulb tips coming through.

sbg, our first crocus flowered today!

I now have more Crocuses open on the balcony as well as Snowdrops. My Daffodils are moving along quite quickly & the first buds will be opening soon!
The 4 days of warmer weather forecast for this week should help them along as well!

Lovely! We've had two cracking days of sunshine here, but boy, it's cold! No snow yet for a few days now but really heavy frosts. The greenhouse heater is on full!
