Nocturnal visitor.

I wondered if the spikey one would return this spring.

I was delighted to spot this one by one of the bird feeders.

So I ran out and sprinkled cat food around him/her to hopefully slow down his/her escape from the garden.

I popped in to get my camera.

Smile :o)

I watched him/her eat half of it before I got too cold to hang around.

I will be putting food out every night now.

Oh you are so lucky, not seen any for years, the badgers have killed them all I am afraid......

I'd be surprised if the badgers killed them. they have probably outcompeted them for food and the hedgehogs have moved on. they have a huge feeding range.

no badgers near us sadly.

Lucky you. We used to have hedgehogs visiting and even had a nest with babies, but that was 30 years ago. Since we now have concrete gravel boards at the bottom of the fences and netting to prevent rats, not seen any for years, except the squashed variety in the road.

No, me neither Sue. And we have chicken wire around our hedge to stop the dogs getting out and the pheasants getting in, so there's no access for any hedgies. Probably just as well with a JRT on patrol and a naughty Lab.

We built a stone wall around the garden so never see hedgehogs now but Scottish was telling me she has a mum and babies in the garden. They are fantastic clearers of slugs and snails.

Hi, about 3 years ago I found the skin of a hedgehog, of which we used to have a few visit, there was nothing left of the hedgehog except the skin/ spines, and as far as I'm aware, the only animal that is capable of doing this is a badger, we've not seen a hedgehog since, but I do have a 'track' over the grass from 1 end of the garden to the other, which I suspect is made by a badger, Derek.

Its lovely to seethem.....I wont ever get them here as our garden is sealed all round....a real shame , I loved seeing them in my front garden at the last house.

Contained gardens are a contributor to the decline in hedgehog numbers, that is such a shame.

Such a treat to see a hedgehog so close to you. Hope he/she returns.

I found a hedgehog skin in our garden too a few years ago, and there are badgers around. Between road kill and badgers the poor things are up against it.

I had one overwinter in a large pile of leaves - I found him by accident when I was tidying up - I covered him up again and made a sort of pyramid out of an empty compost bag to keep the rain out - he stayed until the end of March - there is access to our garden in a couple of places so I hope he returns

What a super visitor luck you!!

there are holes in the fences and hedge bottoms that allow access. He/she was back last night.
The secret is to not have a too tidy garden and grass on a slightly higher cut apparently.
I also put out small amounts of cat food, in a length of drain pipe that stops the local cats eating it.

I also have several log piles that were built with cavities in them hoping to encourage them in.

The only visitors we get though the holes under the fences is fats and juice that live under next door's decking. But, we live in a terrace with no side/back gate/entrance and a wall between us and the green space behind us.

We did have a hole left under the fence between our garden and next door, but then we got new neighbours who've blocked it off. I tried to explain why it had been left, but without success :((

Shame, Waddy - some people...

I know :(

Saw one last year in the back garden and was so thrilled. Since the 1976 heath fire they seemed to have disappeared.

Years ago I kept one in my father's big greenhouse. It cleared the place of slugs.

(Have you ever heard the crunching sound of slugs being eaten by a hedgehog? Not recommended!!)

Seaburngirl: Is the hedgehog still around?

1 May, 2017

I've not actually seen him/her but there are spoors on the grass and tracks through the plants. So yes still around.
