I have my garden but what about my beloved and a big cat?

Like many of you I have been doing lots more gardening during this time of social isolation. One of my closest friends commented that it would be no different for husband and me as he can spend up to 12hrs a day in his garage/ workshop.
I have mentioned in passing that we often go out on a motorbike for lunch gatherings on Fridays with the AJs and Matchless group E Yorks branch. He does renovate his bikes and some have been bought in boxes to have the ‘works’ done.

Back in May he came across one such project. A very big cat! A 1961 Panther 120. A none runner and in a sorry state, though it did appear to be all there. Well it wasn’t on closer inspection but he’s not one to be put off. Though there were a couple of stacker boxes of bits, not all Panther bits either.

The current social isolation began now for us :o)) The bike was stripped down and the frame was checked for cracks and stripped of paint. One of the mud guards needed welding and then they were all repainted. Beloved did all these jobs himself and then he started paying attention to the engine. There is only 1 cylinder and it is exceedingly heavy, it is a 650 cc and it took my help to get it back in without any of the piston rings pinging out.
Now beloved does like his bikes shiny so the engine was polished too.

Then came the petrol tank, it didn’t look too bad until he stripped the paint off and found lots of small dints and dings. So these were filled and the tank was re-sprayed hanging from my rose arch. He did the gold line/pinstripe first, masked it then the cream and finally the black. Usually the pin stripping is done last but he finds he gets better results doing in reverse and masking it. Any nuts and bolts he couldn’t buy he made.
At the week end I heard a distinctive pop pop pop as he got it fired up. Not quite a roar or a purr but what a lovely sound none the less.

The only thing left to do now is firmly fix the levers and cables to the handle bars and the big cat is ready for the road.

All we need now is for ‘staying at home’ to be lifted so we can take it out. I am really looking forward to that.

He has cut the grass and helped cut the Pyracantha back though that was because it kept ‘stabbing’ him in the back.

So what has your other half been up to during this crisis?

What a brilliant job! Since you ask, my OH has been working to sort out the 21 bank accounts left by his recently deceased aunt (she was 99j. Busy, but not quite so rewarding as restoring a bike to glory 🙂.

That is a fantastic renovation. I remember when my Dad had motorbikes, and a sidecar when we were young, and the registration plates were usually PO, PB or PX, meaning they were registered in Sussex. I'm wondering if OP is a Yorkshire area code .....

My OH has helped me to clear out and rearrange the shelving in the greenhouse, helped empty the 'Dalek' composter and barrowed 4 loads to the flower borders, gardening tasks he has never done before!

Amazing! I do love a project especially when it turns out as good as this. Well done.

Oh Sheila that wont be fun for him at all.

Although Panthers were made in Cleckheaton OP is/was a Birmingham registration back then. So a Yorkshire bike but with the E in front it even sounds Yorkshire [Aye up].

That's what I have been doing with one of our square darleks Shirley.
Thorney he always works like this be it painting in the house etc. Sometimes it can be a pain though :o))

Absolutely brilliant! How is he going to restrain himself until we ca go out again?

Your OH has done a brilliant job of the Panther Seaburngurl let's hope this isolation does nt last much longer so he can try it out. My ex husband started with bikes then went on to doing cars up even to the extent of having car engines in our bedroom in a medium size caravan he then went into scrap or doing cars up he thought was repairable bought for scrap . Yes my case men can become a pain when your home is taken over by gear box s and engines. 🙄

My husband spends his time with his guitars/keyboards/mini studio set up he has in the living room. He's done that for as many years as I've done the garden. He does help in the garden too though, a lot more than I can help him compose music or produce videos!

He's never been a fresh air type, unless we're in a hot country, the NE winds aren't his favourite! But he'll help with tying or digging or trimming, and he's even started to help me with the indoor seeds.

Very fine work on the Panther, it reminded me of my Dad, he used to bring the car battery into the kitchen to recharge it, many moons ago!

Thank you for sharing!

Well what a transformation, well done that man!....I showed the bike to my OH he was very impressed, in his youth he used to have a bike...
My OH is a proper gardener, not like me.....I design, buy create
and paint...he is happy sowing seeds, pruning, planting, digging, mowing, edging feeding, watering, when he’s not doing that he loves his iPad, crosswords, and Dad’s Army!!and FB So being in isolation hasn’t made any difference....other than we can’t go to the GC...or see our grandchildren ....but we can see them virtually thank goodness!

My OH decorated the study today.....sounds pretty pathetic next to this fantastic work! But hey ho. Actually OH did take a course to learn to ride a Bike but (as I expected) he didn't enjoy it. He feels too vulnerable on the road. I knew it would be so as he has never enjoyed cycling for the same reason (although he pretends it is that he gets a sore back ;) lol) Anyway...we are not bikers. But I must say, that is one beautiful machine. 59 years old....wow! Congratulations...a fantastic job. I am going to take a copy of the photos and show my Brother as he loves his bikes too. Maybe he will come on and read the blog. :)

Thank you so much for your very kind words. I have always been proud of his renovations.

I am glad this one is finished as he has a new project to start on Monday. Its is a bit of a nightmare. We have found active woodworm in 4 out of 5 rooms downstairs. The clue was when a floor board gave way under foot. when he looked at it there were lots of little holes every where. Luckily it counts as essential work so we have a company coming on Monday to spray downstairs. Beloved will then replace any timbers that are too far gone. Then we will redecorate through out. I just hope the stay at home restrictions will still apply as he will not be a happy bunny if he has to decorate when we can get out on the open road.

Oh good grief! :(

2 Apr, 2020

That is definitely something you could have done without! Let's hope you can get the renovation materials you'll need for the redecoration. Oh dear you'll have a lot of stuff to put up with, all that on top of your daughter's goods and chattels!
My OH who has never shown any interest in gardening except hedge and grass trimming suddenly announced this morning that he was going out to do battle with our dreaded blackthorn suckers.(And there are plenty) And yesterday he agreed (with a bit of arm twisting) to dead head all the daffodils. Bless him he just nipped the heads off rather than the whole stem but I was grateful, being confined to the house with a bad chest.

I admire people who enjoy working with machines. It must be very satisfying to bring something back to that condition :)

If Beryl was my OH she would have been gardening like me, but now I suppose she is gardening somewhere else :)

Exactly Karen and I will have to try and empty sideboards/welsh dresser so the furniture can be moved into the middle of the rooms. Hubby will move carpets and cut the access holes for the chap who will get into the crawl space. Stera we will have to move Toria's stuff again from where I had put it.

I only snap off the spent flower too so I can see where your hubby is coming from. Its a none bending technique haha.
It is Hywel and we each have our own patience depending on what we are doing. I am sure Beryl is admiring what you are doing too. Bless her memory.
Not done any gardening today. So much stuff to go the now shut council tip. Ah well at least I got rid of all my old bank statements p6o's and payslips. I had kept them all from Sept 1981 to Aug 2016! I have kept the first and last one as points of interest.

What a great job!!!

As an ex biker myself, I can appreciate that Baby! Wow...just beautiful. I'm well Jel!

he has ridden the panther around the garden to test the brakes etc.

The woodworm treatment now takes place on Wednesday. We need to replace 50% of the floor joists too but none of the timber merchants in our area are closed. B&Q will only take orders for trade and as we are not trade its just tough luck. We have managed to scrounge at least 2 lengths so the kitchen will be sorted and then we can use the cooker again. he has been eyeing up the timber he used when he altered my fruit cage.
I have been cooking on a camping stove since last Wednesday..

Eileen, the restrictions here only apply to social gatherings. I can take my bike or car out on the open road. I love riding down to the shore now as the roads are open and that ocean breeze! It's all mine! No restrictions about taking the bike out. I do my grocery shopping as soon as they open - again, no crowds, I'm in and out and the place is practically all mine when I'm there first thing in the morning. It just frees up the rest of my day and I work from home anyway. That saves me loads of time and money.

The government has asked the country not to go out driving unless it is to get food or to go to essential work Paul. So we are not meant to go out for a pleasure ride. So far we are following the rules. You are lucky in being able to get out and about.
We are saving money as no coffee and cake etc or the odd lunch out. When this is all over we shall have a nice ride out and treat ourselves to a decent lunch. The ghardest thing is that we cant go and visit Elizabeth our eldest girl and she cant come here.

It is lovely to see the great job your OH has made of that rebuild. He is lucky to have an understanding wife who appreciates his hobby. My OH is a Radio Ham and I was always keen to drive around the country spending nights in places we would never have thought of visiting if there had not been an Amateur Radio Event happening there. The number of disgruntled wives I met were far more than the few like myself who always knew what their husbands were up to. He has always enjoyed the challenge of bringing a piece of radio equipment back to life. When we first married we lived in a two bedroom cottage with a tiny garden. He used to go to auctions and one time he bought what he thought was one radio receiver. It turned out to be 12 of the kind he wanted plus loads of other stuff. Fortunately a friend was there who was able to take the stuff home for him. It filled the spare bedroom. The attic was already well filled as was the area under the floor boards. When we moved we were stuck because we could not get his radio "junk" moved. In the end someone removing other stuff for us suggested we ask the local coal merchant to send a lorry with sides on it along. Dear knows what the neighbours thought when we turned up at midnight and proceeded to decant the contents of a very overladen lorry on to the lawns either side of our new home, a bungalow in a very nice area of Edinburgh. Forget about getting the house sorted out we had to move all the stuff round to the back garden as quickly as possible over the next two days. Life can be so much fun.
Finding so much woodworm must have seemed like the disaster of the decade. Maybe the company treating the floor would allow him to order wood through them to allow the work to be done before they spray. I hope you manage to get it sorted out quickly.

Oh sorry about that Eileen. I hope all this is over soon.

8 Apr, 2020

wood worm treated and beloved is putting the floors back down where he can. The good news is a mate of a mate has some spare joists and floor boards and he will put them on his driveway so they can be picked up tomorrow afternoon.

That is good news Sbg. I hope there will be enough to finish the job. We had a surveyor out yesterday to look at our roof because in a high wind we lost lots of slates from the front elevation. He confirmed the slaters diagnosis that the Victorian roof has reached the end of its viable life. Because we live in a listed building we need to submit building and planning applications to allow us to replace it. We are hoping for lots of dry weather while we wait for at least two months for a decision.
Stay safe.

9 Apr, 2020

Oh that is bad news for you too and the need for planning approval is always a major pain. Will you be able to resource 'period' roofing if that's required? There again new slate is the same as old slate its still millions of years old.

9 Apr, 2020

The trouble with accessing recycled slate the same as what is on the roof is the astronomical cost because it takes time to recut it. If we buy "new" slate it will be cut by machine and be a standard size and thickness meaning the price is much less. The decision will depend on the local authority. Our surveyor gave us the name of a local slater who still works with lead flashing and will cut slate which we saved when we knocked the church down. He is coming on Saturday at 9am so fingers crossed he will be able to make us watertight with a temporary fix. It is a bit of a blow but we have survived before and will just have to get on with it.
Best wishes for a speedy solution to your problem.
