We are getting a dog!!!!!!!!!!

Well after weeks of family discussion…along the lines of (to teenage daughter) you have to look after it, that means poop a scooping, walking, feeding grooming etc., etc., we decided to go ahead, off we went to the local Dog Sanctuary called ‘Jerry Greens’. As i was unwell on the saturday hubby and daughter went to have a look around, they came back with 2 probables a Staffordshire Terrier called Stella, a black coated Retriever called Sam, and a Collie cross called Jack, so on the Sunday off we all went to look at the above dogs. Well all of them had been reserved!!! I have been quite surprised actually because there weren’t as many in the kennels as i would have thought (which is a good thing) and there were lots of people looking! Anyway as they were not available (lots of downturn of mouth from daughter) we had to look again, there was a lovely scruffy looking dog (if you know what i mean) got some Jack Russell in him called Toby, so we went to the office to see if he was available, it didn’t say anything on his kennel, but lo and behold he was Reserved too! Beginning to despair the lady in charge said ‘Have you looked at Jerry? He’s in with Molly the Chiuaua, well off we went back to the kennels daughter panicking in case anyone else saw him first lol, He was in the covered bit at the back of the kennel and Molly (who was lovely very friendly) was obviously in charge he tried to come out to see us but she very firmly sent him packing !!! Anyway we asked to get him out and we took him for a walk in the big field, he was very timid but lovely Jack Russell cross we guessed rough coated, daughter walked him for a while then we went back to the office to ask if we could reserve him and to ask a for a bit of history. He had only been in their kennels for a day hence the shyness he had belonged to an elderly lady who sadly had to go into a home due to ill health, he is good with cats and children and house trained and about 5 years old. We are picking him up on Saturday, and we can’t wait!!!! Below is a picture i found on the internet that looks like him but when we get him home will post some photos….first on the agenda is a bath as he stinks lol!!!!!

Am so excited TT....Sarah is already planning on teaching him some tricks lol

2 Nov, 2009

Great idea... you CAN teach tricks to a 5 year old....
... just do it a little bit at a time...:o)

Will you rename him ?

2 Nov, 2009

aww i love these little doggys SK, bet he will be a real character, full of fun, look forward to pics :o)

~ it's a fair bet he will be thoroughly spoiled ~he looks gorgeous and deserves to be spoiled after having his life turned upside down!
I always feel so sorry for the ones who have had a good home and find themselves in a rescue centre through no fault of their own.
Good for you for taking him on ~ I hope he settles in quickly!

2 Nov, 2009

Still wondering whether to rename or not Louise anyone any comments? better to keep name he has or to change? I hope he will settle in quickly, got to be better than where he is although they are well looked after its not the same as a nice home is it?

2 Nov, 2009

If the dog is five years old, I would suggest not renaming, or choosing something which rhymes, sounding very similar....
e.g. Terry instead of Jerry... that type of idea...

The dog will have enough changes, so if you can keep the same name... it will be one less upheaval for him.

He looks so CUTE. :o)

2 Nov, 2009

Is Jerry the name he's had with his previous owner, or is it one the Rescue Home gave him ?
If it's the former i'd stick with it or he might get confused.

2 Nov, 2009

~my daughter's 46 kilo Mastiff had been called Sonny which seemed completely out of character so they renamed him Dexter~Dex for short ~ he was really quiet and subdued for the first couple of weeks but soon took his name on board as he was only about six months when they took him on.
When we took on a Boxer at two years whose owner had died he already had the name he was used to so we stuck with that~

How exciting SK. Bet he turns out to be a devoted loyal companion. So nice that he will only have been 1 week in kennels. Roll on Saturday :~)))

Well done, SK, on choosing an older dog and one that desperately needed a home. I do hope you all have lots of fun together. I hope the elderly lady hears that he has been rehomed and is glad for him. Looking forward to more news/photos of Jerry (or whotever!).

Wow how lucky is that little dog and you .He must be feeling really sad at the moment missing his mum. Give him plenty of love and he'll reward you.

2 Nov, 2009

Awww! Sweet! I cant wait to see pucs of the REAL Jerry!
Its a cute name!

2 Nov, 2009

When I were a lad (back in the last century), we had a Jack Russell terrier which my parents bought when he was just a few weeks old. The breeders had called him Ringo but my parents wanted to call him Sandy. So for the first few weeks he was Ringo Sandy, then he became Sandy Ringo and finally he answered (usually) to just Sandy

So nice to take on an older dog ,he sounds lovely .

2 Nov, 2009

Well of COURSE it was last century Andrew!! We're only 9 years into this one! Or did you mean the one before?? LOL!
Only joking, honest!!

2 Nov, 2009

Good for you.....Im sure you will have many years of enjoying each other company.....Cant wait to see the photos of him when you get him home at the weekend.....

2 Nov, 2009

Well Sk if Jerry is anywhere near as cute as the picture you found he will be a beauty, I hope he will be good for you, cannot wait for pics.

2 Nov, 2009

Goo luck with your new dog, looking forward to seeing the real photos of him...........

2 Nov, 2009

A new family member, what fun ahead! He'll keep you on your toes!

I'd agree with TT about keeping his name. If a dog has been badly treated, changing their name takes away that connection with their past, but otherwise keeping it the same saves confusion.

Look forward to photo's and more news!

Yes having thought about it and taken on all your comments i think we will stick with Jerry as you say he's had enough change and its not as if he has been ill treated, i am going to ask at the centre if someone can let the lady know that he has been rehomed, i know if it was me i would want to know he had gone to a good home, would be nice for her to see him too but i have no idea where he came from and not sure the centre do either but i will ask even a little note and photo would be nice to recieve.
Bought a collar and lead (had to be in blue daughter insisted!!) a bowl, dog food, a blanket, a brush and shampoo!!!!!!

Madperth - but that's 63 dog years

Bet you cant wait to take him home.......

3 Nov, 2009

3 Nov, 2009

What about Toffe. Do you think they'll get on?

3 Nov, 2009

I'd just thought of that, Hywel, and had come back to ask :)

3 Nov, 2009

Lol, Andrew!
Thats great SK! And what a lovely thought to let the lady know! :~))

3 Nov, 2009

Congrats on getting jerry SK , you & your family will thoroughly enjoy him :~)))

Sk I am absolutely delighted for you and your daughter and obviously the little dog,the photo you entered is the absolute image of my sister`s Nipper, sis got him from a rescue centre about 13yrs ago,no idea of his origin or age and he is lovely and very healthy still. One of our previous boys was also rescued and we had him for over 18yrs no idea of his true age but vet said when we first got him that he estimated his age at 18 mths -2yrs,it was hard at first because he had been abused and was terrified of so many things but he had a very happy life with us, As to the name part our children sorted that by trying different names and words, that was hilarious at the time as the only thing he answered to was ham and spam, he was promptly named Sam .lol.
Looking forward to hearing more and seeing photo`s........

Re cats...the lady said he had been homed with a cat (did wonder if thats where the Jerry came from..Tom for the cat and Jerry for the dog Tom and Jerry lol ) and was good with them one reason for getting him, we have had visits from friends with dogs and although Toffee sat very upright and fluffed out his fur he didn't run off so i am hopeful they will eventually get on or at least tolerate each other!!! Saturday seems to be coming on so slowly lol!

4 Nov, 2009

Hywel you've changed your Avatar pic!!! didn't recognise you for a minute!!!!

4 Nov, 2009

I've changed my user name. The new avatar goes with the name 'Hywel'.
The old avatar goes with 'Blodyn'
But I will only be using 'Hywel' from now on. - all that was just a bit of nonsense for today'
I changed for people to call me Hywel.

4 Nov, 2009

I suppose it will take time for them to get used to each other - like us I suppose. I hope it all works out :o)

4 Nov, 2009

Sounds wonderful, Skilla! A lovely story with a happy ending - and another episode to come, as well. :-)))

4 Nov, 2009

You can always says "It's short for 'Germander'" or 'Geranium' if you prefer! All my dogs have been rescued, and that's so wonderful for all concerned! Got a long haired little terrier, 9 days past his "kill date," we named "O Be Joyful": it was kismet.

5 Nov, 2009

Do you call him 'Oby' for short, Orgratis?

6 Nov, 2009

Or Obi Knobi? :-D

7 Nov, 2009

LOL.

7 Nov, 2009

O that's a good wan, Andrew! I intended to call him Obi, but my daughter called him Joyful and that's what he answered to! He had been kicked & much abused, so very fearful & only came reluctantly but loved to dance! He had a loving two years with us before he ran in front of a car one dark & rainy night. As I was burying him, hundreds of butterflies alighted nearby lifting my heart: the Navaho say those are souls passing.

8 Nov, 2009

Oh thats so sad Orgratis, but uplifting too, 'there are more things in this world Horatio than we know of' (thats a saying in our house lol)

8 Nov, 2009

Oh no! A sad story - but, as you say, uplifting. I'm glad he had two happy years with you.

8 Nov, 2009

Rescuing a loyal and loving friend is repaid a thousand fold, so bless you for finding room for your Jerry. I miss all my furry companions, as do we all, for they have taught me so much about loving unconditionally, which eventually I am even extending to people... Sometimes I still see them running ahead along a footpath, odd as I'm not particularly gifted that way, but they are!
