A Cornish garden . . . plus beaches

There is beautiful garden on the Lizard Peninsula called Bonython Manor . . . it was featured in the magazine “Gardens Illustrated”, so as we were nearby recently, we called in. We almost had it to ourselves, and were delighted that son Steve and his girlfriend Claire (who we had just met) came with us.

This is the 18th century walled garden with colour-themed herbaceous borders,

and my husband wondering why our garden doesn’t look like this . . . hmmm, it’s a puzzle, isn’t it.

A spectacular Clematis – this owner definitely has green fingers,

and her lovely, “hot” South African garden.

There was a little thatched tea-room, where Steve saw a swallows nest up in the rafters, with three baby swallows! The parents were swooping in and out, carrying on the important matter of feeding in spite of visitors with cameras – and yes, it is the right way up.

Earlier we had been to Kynance Cove, but it was a bit cloudy, so no good photos. The next day was glorious, and we drove west of St Ives to Zennor, where we had a wonderful cliff-top walk.

Back into the car to go further west, to Peneen, where we managed the very steep path down, and down, to the tiny beach.

A fishing boat was hovering several yards out, and tried to throw a cod they’d caught to an elderly man waiting on the shore, but it fell short. So Steve rolled up his jeans, waded out and managed to grab it . . . “it’s very slippery!” he said. The gentleman was grateful for his lunch.

We were lucky to have this view from our hotel room towards St Ives and the harbour. We were only there for three days, but it seemed a lot longer.

Hope you’ve enjoyed being on holiday with us!

Thanks Yorks, Clarice, Lil and Karen! Several places in Cornwall, Yorks: the garden was near Helston on the Lizard Peninsular; we stayed in St Ives on the north coast, then drove north-west to the tiny villages Zennor and Peneen. Steve actually lives in Falmouth, and his girlfriend Claire in St Ives.

Happy to answer any further questions!

Lovely blog, Sheila, and you can see why so many artists paint in and around St.Ives ..... the light there is something special, isn't it? :o)

Lovely photos! Ah! The Memories! Camping at the age of 14 with my parents all round the south coast from Devon, on to St.Ives and the Lizard and back along the north coast. Later, a honeymoon in St.Ives; later still, further holidays in St. Ives taking my very young daughter and an even younger 'bump' that was to become my second daughter. Is there still a seagull on every chimney and a cat on every doorstep?

Wonderful coastline there Sheila, beautifully captured, so glad you had a nice break.

Thanks for your kind comments, Shirley, Nariz and Grandma . . . yes the light in Cornwall is indeed something special, and the air too - breathing in all that ozone does me good!

Still seagulls and cats everywhere - and tourists! Luckily it's OH who is the photographer, with his mobile. :))

Must be a good mobile Sheila, they are brillaint pics.

Thanks . . . he seems to have "a good eye" (inherited by Steve, btw, who won a prize in his local paper for one of his photographs). Sorry, proud Mum!

7 Aug, 2011

Dont be sorry, 'proud mum' as you say!

7 Aug, 2011

Yeah ... rightly so! I know kids hate it when we 'talk them up' but then that's what Mums are for. :o)
