Opening my garden for the first time!

It’s Open Gardens Day in our town on Sunday, and I have somewhat crazily agreed to open mine … it’s all for charities (our local hospice and the Red Cross). Here is a sample of what the visitors will see …

Verbena Blush

Mix of Anemones, Argeranthum, Osteospermum ‘rose’

Calendula, Geranium

Bacopa

I also took many more photos of Ammi majus with Centaura (blue Cornflower), Cosmos Xanthos, Petunia Tidal Wave, Acers with Bamboo, Acer Osakazuki, Campanula, Verbena Sissinghurst Pink, Blue Campanula (like Ange’s, with White Osterspermum, and Geranium Ann Folkard (I think). For some reason I couldn’t upload these … sorry! I’m just not techie enough perhaps …

Hope you are all enjoying this sunny weather, and I’m hoping for fine weather on Sunday of course :)

What a splendid idea, Sheila, and be certain your garden will not let you down! I wish I was closer, I'd come!

Thank you both for your encouraging words 🙂. You would be most welcome any time! I’m inviting a few friends to come late in the day, when OH will be offering Pimm’s …

Oh, I'm doubly sorry I shall not be there, then!

I hope it will be a great success. Quite an undertaking, asking all to come & view. Will think of you on the day.

Thanks everyone … there are 20 gardens ‘open’ so I might not get very many visitors .. we are right on the edge of the map 🙂.

Lovely! I’m definitely positive that all who visit will just love your garden, Sheila! It’s a fantastic cause and I do think the people who come will certainly learn a lot and be inspired! I am! Best wishes for Sunday xx

Gobsmacked! It doesn't seem more than abut a fortnight since it was all bare and full of workmen. Absolutely brilliant and I'm rather jealous!

Your garden is beautiful Sheila, I am sure they will all love it, good luck, but I don't think you need it, I wish I could come but sadly too far away.

Your garden is a delight and everyone who steps through the gate on Sunday will love it.

Have a lovely time.

Thank you so much Julia, Kate, Sue (Stera), Callie and Chris. I’m really amazed at such lovely positive comments … you’ve definitely given me confidence 🙂, so I’ll now sit back and wait and see what ‘the public’ think!

Sheila, that's a wonderful gesture from you. I'm sure you will have many visitors and be asked lots of questions about your lovely plants ... I shall be thinking of you tomorrow ... :o))

Klahanie thank you so much. x

Shirley, I hope we do get a good crowd … just hope the sun will shine. Thanks for thinking of me 🙂.

Sheila, we have visited open gardens in all weathers. Years ago, whilst holidaying on the Isle of Wight there had been such heavy rain that the owners of one garden created a pathway from wood pallets ... hilarious but enabled folk to visit. Not that I'm suggesting you will need to do that ... :o))

Shirley, it makes a great day out doesn’t it. I’m just sorry that I won’t be able to visit many other gardens as I have to stay here! But I have seen another “first timer” and we are going to keep in touch, so that’s a bonus 🙂.

I'm sure the visitors will love your garden Sheila. We are our worst critics because we know the bits we aren't happy with, but fresh eyes will appreciate it all

That’s probably true, and kind of you to say so Andrew, thank you 🙂.

I went to a 'new open garden' yesterday and like you the owner was very apprehensive. It was beautiful and even if the weeds were lurking in the remote areas it added to the natural feel of the garden.
one visitor [who is known to be a pompous ass] queried why she had a particular rose as its colour didn't really go with the rest of the pallet in that bed. Her response made me laugh out loud. 'Because I like it and its my garden'. he mumbled something inaudible and wandered off.

It was the epitome of a cottage garden and she has been developing it for 20 or more years but this was the first time she had opened it.

Tiring but rewarding was her comments when I spoke to her last night.

Enjoy the day.

Thanks Eileen and Balcony. We had a very rewarding day … 304 visitors and many lovely appreciative comments. Yes, we’re tired, but amazed and grateful to have met so many genuinely interested people.

Thanks Eileen!

Oh Hywel, how lovely to see you! Thank you, you say the nicest things … I was very lucky that the weather was fine and the garden was looking colourful 🙂.

Glad to hear that your first open day went very well for you! It's always good to hear other people's thoughts on ones garden as we see all the "defects" of our own gardens!

Exactly right Balcony … thank you 🙂.

Sheila, 304 visitors is wonderful! I am so pleased it all went well for you ... :o)

That was AMAZING! Well done. Do you think you might open for the NGS in the future? Yes, I know it's hard work, but it's well worth it, giving pleasure to your visitors. XXX

P.S. Love that twisty path...

21 Jun, 2022

Shirley, thanks so much!

Hi Spritzhenry, thank you! It was great fun, but the garden doesn’t have 40 minutes of interest which I gather the NGS expects. Our local organisation is just right for us. That path got the most comments 🙂

So glad that it was a great success,it’s a lovely garden.
