Early October and still a little colour

I’ve recently become a big fan of Japanese Anemones – well, just the white ones. Last year I had A. Ruffled Swan but that has not reappeared; instead I bought A. Charlotte, seen here with Argyranthemum

I have also bought another Anemone Wild Swan, A. Pamina and A. Robustissima from Sarah Raven: the labels for the last two fell from the pots in transit so I won’t know which is which until they flower!

Ceratostigma from a friend – a much more vivid blue in real life

Dahlegria White (large Dahlia)

Verbena Blush, pink Geranium, and perennial Geranium with tiny lilac flowers and purple leaves

OH watering my wild flower seeds … then he saw a butterfly on the ground …

… and carefully carried it to show me, then we put the beautiful Peacock on the Bacopa.

It’s lovely to still see a few butterflies in the garden, but I guess they won’t be around for much longer :(

I love the japanese anenomes and white are my favourites as well Sheila, even now the sun has gone down they are glowing, your garden is lovely and lots of colour to admire, still seeing butterflies and now a few ladybirds again, I get quite excited even if its only a solitary one, there were lots in the springtime mostly on my spreading juniper but then they disappeared, probably due to that heat...Lovely photographs especially the last one..

Thanks very much Sue … for once my hands holding the camera didn’t shake too much 🙂.

I like your anemones, Sheila, you have quite a collection. What a shame you might have lost your favourite. Perhaps it will surprise you and return next year. I have had only 1 or 2 flowers on minre this year. I planted a new one earlier this year but can't remember where I put it! Your blog reminded me. No sign yet. You have some very pretty cottagey borders.

Thanks Ange. Hope your new Anemone will flower soon - maybe warmer weather in the next few days will help.

I love the Anemones Sheila, but the large ones have totally taken over in the front garden, even popping up in the gravel area, so had to take some of them up.
I too like the white ones the best.
I love the Bacopas too and how lovely to find that butterfly!

Many thanks Rose, yes she seemed happy on our hands, but maybe she was just tired 🙂.

lots of lovely colour in your garden Sheila. I also love Jap anemones but they can get out of hand if not watched.

We are still getting a few butterflies in the garden and the bats are still active but we are getting lots of geese flying over. Autumn definitely here.

Thank you Eileen. I know the pink anemones can be thugs but luckily the white ones seem to be better behaved. Yes, Autumn is with us.

Lovey picture of your Japanese Anemone, Sheila. They are something I've never grown on the balcony, probably because all the years I've gardened on it I've had bedding plants mostly.

Lovely photos, I like Japanese Anemones too, tho’ I haven’t got any( limited space). The white ones seem to be much smaller & better behaved. I like your new one A Charlotte though. Nice pic of the peacock butterfly. I did not get many butterflies this year, not even on the Buddleia, hope for more in 2023.

Thanks Balcony. They are possibly mostly too big for your balcony, but I currently have a tiny seedling of Anemone Wild Swan (white with a purple back, very pretty!).

Thank you Josee. I hadn’t realised until you said that, but we didn’t have as many butterflies as usual either. Such a shame …

Always love to see your garden Sheila and your October pictures making it still look colourful and inviting. I also have lots of Japanese Anemones. They cheer up many spots in this time of the year.
I have not seen a butterfly for a long time now.
We have lots of American robins around these days. I think they are migrating and traveling in groups.
I love to see them. We still have lots of berries and birdbaths for them to enjoy their stay.
Love your picture of a Peacock butterfly on the Bacopa.

I have a pink one too, which is a smaller variety, and always flowers first, and finishes first too,but I love it. Your last photo is beautiful, well captured ! :o) .I wasn't able to find any Bacopa this year, did you grow yours from seed ? Nice to see your OH given you a helping hand too ..mine is a good sweeper upper ! Lol. xx

Hi Sandra, thank you for your lovely comments! Yes, the white Japanese anemones definitely light up a garden 🙂. I can’t usually capture butterflies, but I think this lovely one was tired so I had time to rush indoors for my camera.

The Bacopa were from Hayloft who called it something like Satura scopia… a friend pointed out that it’s Bacopa! You had to buy all three colours at once - not a bad idea. I will definitely grow them again next year.
