Highdown Gardens, nr. Worthing.

We took a thirty minute stroll around these gardens this morning, as part of my R&R, and kept mostly to the level areas, avoiding the up and down hill parts.
Even though it is only January 23rd, it was a pleasant surprise to see so many Spring bulbs and plants already in bloom.
I shall let the pictures tell the story …
Copious amount of berries on this Viburnum betulifolium …
Very striking bright green moss growing along this live tree branch …
Small clumps of mauve Crocus in abundance …
The Hellebores are about a month ahead of last year …
Snowdrops in various sizes and heights …
Very surprised to see the taller Leucojum vernum … the one my old Grandad always called ‘that bloomin’ Snowflake’! …
Huge number of tassels on this Garrya elliptica …
These orange Crocus and citrus lemon Aconites seem to be a colour clash to my eyes … but we can’t all like the same colour schemes! …
The Bamboos around the pond area are looking really good for the time of year …
New growth on the Roses already …
My time for exercise is almost up … just have to touch one or more of these Prunus serrula or Himalayan Birch Bark Cherry trees … so tactile … smooth and polished! …
Driving down from Highdown now … the trees on the horizon just hiding the English Channel … on a clear and sunny day the view from the top is beautiful … too dull and grey today.
So much nicer than walking ‘round the block’ for thirty minutes of exercise.

Thank you for sharing those pictures. Unfortunately, we have real white winter here. No flowers, only shy buds.

Nice walk! Lovely to see such early booms. :o)

I have posted blogs about Highdown Gardens before ... did wonder if I should do another! ... Then I realised just how early these blooms are out this year ... at least a month earlier than last year ... today is a grey and dreary one after the rain last night ... so pleased we walked up there yesterday! ... :o)

Good to see you on the move and giving a breath of spring as well. x

Lovely blog, Shirley, and well done for getting out for a stroll. Love the Garrya elliptica and bamboos. We are looking for a Prunus 'serrula' to plant in Chiara's name - so lovely to stroke!!

It looks a lovely gardens Shirley, is it far from Worthing?
as to the colours together I wonder if the winter aconites should be over before the crocus come out... up here theres no sign of any spring blooms at all yet
Walks in such lovely surroundings will hopefully speed your recovery xxx

Hi, Shirley, I have noticed just now that funny warning on the table at the entrance to the garden: "spreading the cremated remains is forbidden in the garden". Is it English humour?
24 Jan, 2012
Thanks Gm, thanks Sheila ... :o)) . . . . .
I have touched the bark of those trees so many times, Sheilabub ... just can't pass them without doing so! ... Lovely idea to plant one for Chiara ... :o)
Pam, 2 or 3 miles from the town centre of Worthing, Pam ... ample car parking and a lovely tea room just outside the gardens ... :o)
Katarina, many people enjoy walking around or spending time sitting in these gardens and would like their ashes scattered within them ... because it is such a popular request the authorities have had to say 'No' ... I can understand that. There are many benches throughout the gardens and it is allowed to have a plaque engraved ... to say how much a person/persons enjoyed visiting the gardens ... :o)

I've just read how ill you were, Shirley, and I can't believe you're out and about already! Gosh, you're built out of stern stuff Shirl! Keep up the exercise, it's the best thing for you...but don't be overdoing it!xx

I enjoyed your walk too Shirley :-), so nice to see you back, glad you're on the mend xx

Take it easy Shirley....nice to see a Spring in your step. :o))
24 Jan, 2012
Lol, Libet ... I get bored very easily so the chance of some walking around gardens was too good to miss! ... Cardiac Rehab. told me yesterday not to overdo it ... 20 minutes daily is enough for a few weeks ... :o((( . . . . .
Thanks, Simbad ... thanks Linda ... just need some sunny days rather than the grey ones! ... :o)

Do you knit or sew Shirley? I sometimes knit little hats for the special care baby units if you want a small project
I find knitting or sewing whilst I,m listening to a talking book from the library, the radio or the bbci player passes the time quite quickly
25 Jan, 2012
Patchwork occasionally gets done, Pam ... no knitting though ... fell asleep whilst listening to the radio earlier ... :o(((
26 Jan, 2012
You must have needed that doze Shirley . . . what does it matter?! I just fell asleep this pm too, after doing the crossword (I'm not ill, just have a cold) - our bodies are just telling us we need to rest. :))

I enjoy quilting, did quite a bit a couple of years ago for a charity christmas fair--- advent calendars, stockings etc. you cut it out of a printed panel and add padding then quilt it.... time flies but I sit too long if I'm not careful. I agree Sheila.. listen to your body...so have a 'power nap' when you need it !
26 Jan, 2012
Really lovely photographs Shirley. I've only been to Worthing once, to Ambrose Place Gardens in the summer. I'm sure you have been there.
26 Jan, 2012
Lol, Pam and Sheila ... I shan't feel too guilty when the urge to nap comes along now! ... :o)) . . . . .
Do you know, Ginellie, I have only ever walked along the street by the front of the buildings ... yet to see the back gardens which open under the NGS in the Summer ... certainly worth a visit from what I've read about them ... :o)
27 Jan, 2012
I've only just read this blog and am really pleased you are feeling much better. Lovely pictures as well.
30 Jan, 2012
Oh Thankyou, Rose ... it was a huge shock, obviously, but I am getting fitter with each day ... have to have lots of heart monitoring tests in the gym tomorrow ... not looking forward to it at all ... :o(
30 Jan, 2012
You will be fine,Shirley..although it will probably be tiring for you...but good that you are getting good rehab monitoring....you might end up in the Olympics..! :o)
30 Jan, 2012
Would that be the Geriatric Olympics? ... Apparently when I turn 'pink and puffy' I'll know my heart is working to its optimum ... hmm ... can't wait! ... :o(
30 Jan, 2012
Lol,Shirley..pink and fluffy would be cuter ! :o)..oh dear,I can see why it isn't on your list of 'things to do' as a work out....you will be ready for a nice nap afterwards..hope all goes well,I'm sure it will, X
30 Jan, 2012
Thanks, Sandra ... if you don't hear from me for a couple of days you'll know I overdid it ... lol! ... :o)
31 Jan, 2012
You won't be able to wait a couple of days !Lol...we need to know..:o)
31 Jan, 2012
Well, it was a doddle! ... Heart rate monitors were attached to wrist and abdomen ... then I just walked slowly at first ... increasing speed with each 'bleep' and the whole session lasted 30 minutes ... :o )))
1 Feb, 2012
You must be doing very well then shirley...welldone.....:0)))
1 Feb, 2012
That's good Shirley..glad it wasn't stressful for you..do you have to go on a regular basis ? ..I bet that was such a relief..:o)
1 Feb, 2012
Thanks, Pam ... it's bitterly cold down here tonight ... OH has just taken Mum home after a meal here ... frost on the car roof at 6.30pm .. brrr! ... :o ( . . . . .
Sandra, I shall be going on a weekly basis for 8 weeks ... hoping to find somewhere closer than the hospital though ... had my best day so far today ... :o)))
1 Feb, 2012
That will do you good,Shirley ,so even though it's enforced,it will give you somewhere different to go,and it will pass the time on till it's warmer ,and can get out
in your garden..hopefully warmer ,anyway..Glad to hear you have had a good day..:o)
