Feeling positive!
I have had very little interest in the garden over the past few weeks, have only opened up the cold frame and plastic growhouse when I’ve remembered and have put it down to the after effects of the heart attack, the new medicines and the lack of energy!
Yesterday, for some reason, it was as though a light had been switched on and I became aware that Spring had arrived. Birds were coming in to feed at all times of the day … the Robins and Blackbirds seemed to sing non-stop!
Just a few signs of colour in the back garden …
Last Thursday I bought some climbing plants from a supermarket … thanks to Dottydaisy for letting GoYers know of the bargains to be had! … At £1.79 per plant they were too good to pass by … but I have felt too lethargic to plant them … until now … with luck they’ll be in the ground tomorrow …
I also have a climbing Rose to plant … a £2 bargain … if it thrives! … plus 200 Summer bulbs from a GW magazine offer …
Cardiac Rehab. team advise that I take a 30 minute walk each day … which doesn’t sound very long but certainly feels it at times! … So yesterday OH and I chose to go to the countryside and walk around a lake we used to visit regularly … how disappointing to find it is no longer a fishing lake …
At least the Ducks, Coots and Moorhens are still around … and eventually swam up for the bread we gave them …
I wanted to know how much of the lake was visible from the woods … so we climbed over the stile … said ‘Hello’ to the horses … who completely ignored us! … and found fencing virtually all around the lake … we shan’t bother to return for a while … even though the views of the South Downs are a welcome sight …
This morning my walk, or should I say our walk, took us to an area close to the sea and one of the very posh private estates we live near to … as children my sister and I would ride our bicycles along the rough tracks between the fields … stopping off at the pond on the corner near ‘Piggy Lane’ … now re-named ‘Peak Lane’ as the posh folk didn’t like ‘Piggy Lane’ … yes, that is true … :o( …
The pond looks just the same as it did when we used to gather our frog spawn from it … over 40 years ago! … We still laugh at the memory of putting the frog spawn into a small enamel bowl … temporarily … then my sister had a ‘bubble bath’ … as one did back in the day … the bubble effervesced from the outside drain … you’ve guessed … straight into the enamel bowl and killed off the frog spawn … we were so upset at the time … and felt guilty for days after …
I was really pleased to see that very little has changed around the lanes … the hedgerow was full of birds chirping in amongst the Ivy and we even heard a Peacock making the distinctive call … the old thatched cottage with the Geese in the garden was lovely …
So pleased I stopped to say ‘Hello’ to this horse … as I then spotted the clump of Snowdrops near the fencing …
Such delicate flowers … mine need to be placed further forward to be seen easily … shall add it to my garden chores list! …Megan refused to come in before we set off for today’s walk … the reason she wanted to be outdoors is apparent from the next photo … bad cat … AND she growled at me when I approached her! …
The Roses and Lilies OH bought in the supermarket on Saturday (yes, he’s doing the shopping too!) are opening up now … another splash of colour to cheer! …
Looking forward to being in the garden again soon …

Fabulous blog, Shirley! Thank you for taking us on your lovely walk to see the pond and the thatched cottage, and other old haunts.
You've a fair bit of planting in view, but don't do it all at once, lol. You still have to take things a bit easy (please).

Wonderful blog Shirley. So glad your feeling better.
With scenes like that I think its well worth going for your 30 min walk each day.

Thanks for sharing your walk and pleased to hear that you are feeling better, Ollie brought me a mouse on my birthday not the kind of present I was expecting :-))

Nice to see you're able to go for walks Shirley. There's nothing like a bit of fresh air and gentle excercise.
The renaming of Piggy Lane reminded me of 'Dai the Barber', near here ........ it's been renamed 'Hair by David' lol
Well I don't know what you expect Megan to do with a mouse ... maybe she could take it on a walk to Piggy lane :D
Lovely photos from your garden, and I hope all your new plants give a good display in the summer :o)

Glad to hear your strarting to feel better. Beautiful area you live in, must make walks very enjoyable (presuming reasonable weather that is).
Looks like you've had some great buys from M...S :) I've still not made it over yet :( Planning on having some time off next week so planning on stopping in (along with one or two GCs) :)) *rubs hands together in anticiaption* lol
Lol can't say I blame those posh lot for having the road name changed, but I'd care to wager its still known as Piggy Lane to all the locals :)))

Ojibway93 ... it's becoming more and more difficult to locate a decent country walk these days ... so much land is being built on ... :o(
Terra ... definitely feeling more relaxed now ... just hope I continue to recover well ... :o)
Sheilabub ... OH and our son are planning to erect the greenhouse this Sunday ... so do I go out with d-in-law to avoid the blue air or do we stay at home and provide them with refreshment? ... lol! .....
Willinilli ... we are very close to the sea too ... may choose a beach walk for tomorrow ... depends on the tide times ... :o)
Thanks, Hb, I certainly won't be out there digging for too long ... you're right about it being slow but sure!
Oh Mavis ... aren't cats just horrible at times? ... It may be Nature but it's not nice!
Hi Joan ... even neighbour John said he was surprised to see those plants still by the back door ... didn't offer to plant them for me though ... lol!
Hello Hywel ... 'Hair by David' ... does that translate to 'We charge more for a haircut now'? ... Megan really is the best 'Mouser' I have ever known ... she'd be good on a farm! ... :o)))
Sam ... we are fortunate to live between the South Downs and the sea ... but developers are buying up land so fast now for property development ... commuters love moving down here from London! ... Good luck with your plant shopping next week ... :o)

Delighted to see this blog Shirley, you sound a lot better and its good that you are thinking of your gardening jobs, easy ones for you in small doses are the rules this year, you get the supervisors role and of course the admiring and dishing out compliments can also be your job, keep the workers happy, lol.
You have taken some lovely pics, your walk was in a beautiful area, it seems to have a bit of everything, water and rolling hills, quite like the cottage as well, though not sure about the geese, I find them a bit scary like guard dogs..
Colour coming back in the garden really cheers one up, signs of springtime and my birds definitely have springfever.
That look in Megans eyes say`s she is definitely not sharing this time..Take care Shirley..

Well you just can't keep a good gardener down can you? I'm feeling tired just reading what you're up to - mind you don't overdo it Shirley.
In my opinion 'Piggy Lane' sounds so much better. :-))
Lovely blog and photos.

Do you have a copy of the County Definitive Map Shirley?
The Public Rights of Way should be marked on it.
Those developers should not be building on any RoW.
I particularly liked the photograph of the water. Very difficult to paint, but some could copy it onto a picture of something else that includes water.

Great walks you have been taking Shirley, lovely photos. That cottage is pretty, bet the geese 'bark' at the postman! You have some lovely plants too, be careful planting them out at the moment, it is still quite cold and they have been in the warm. I planted out a viburnam and have to keep covering it over with a large pot. Roll on spring & sunshine. Love that Hellebore.
