the flying ants are out in force!

Yesterday evening OH mowed the grass (can’t call it a lawn now, too much clover in it) and I edged it this morning.

When I swept the paths there were many black ants, I didn’t think much of it at the time, but at around 5 o’clock this evening I looked out to see clouds of flying ants and the lawn looked as though it was rippling in a breeze!

Have any others GoY folk seen them yet?

Julia, there were so many of them that I'm glad I had come indoors 5 minutes earlier.

Ugh!

Yes Shirley, we have a few families of the horrible things here. Hoping they won’t be around for long. (Is that what we get for hoping for warmer weather?) 🙁.

Haven't seen more than a couple of ants in the kitchen this year, other years we have to fight them for several months! perhaps the queen has got the message & is not sending her workers to invade our kitchen any longer!

There were no signs of ant activity around here today but perhaps over the next few days with the warmer weather they may come out of their nests & start flying around.

the blackbirds sit on the greenhouse apex next to window vents and just pick them off. I'm expecting emergence next week. They have appeared like clockwork in the last week of July for at least 5 years now.

We sometimes get them in warm weather but I haven't seen any this year. Maybe if the summer weather continues they'll emerge.
I hope they've flown away for you now Shirley

Haven't seen any at the moment and hope I don't !
It must be awful Shirley. When I lived in Laceby, they were in the conservatory, a huge mound of them so put ant powder in my hoover and swept them up.

Thanks everyone for your interesting comments. Two more patches of fine soil have appeared in the lawn so I'm expecting more Flying Ants later this evening ... :o(

We do have them every year here on South Vancouver Island but too early for them yet. I am not looking forward to get them around.
Shirley_tulip, I am trying to replace our grass with clover. We have very dry summers and grass is very thirsty. It is a slow process.

I still haven't seen any & the ants that are normally running all over the plants on the balcony are strangely absent this year so I don't expect to see any swarms of flying ants this year. Which is sad as well because they may be a bit of a nuisance at times & they may be considered "yucky" but they are a vital piece of nature, just like bees & wasps & beetles & all manner of "creepy-crawlies"!

I don't expect them to have been exterminated as there are 1,000s of species of ants & the total number far surpasses the few billion humans on this planet! They have also been around for millions of years longer than we humans.

Haven't seen any ants in the garden for years don't know why but my next door neighbour has lots, however they haven't flown yet, his little girl would certainly let us know as she was petrified last year when it happened, she has a very loud scream...

Klahanie, good luck with the Clover. I actually love Clover!

David, I know they are all part of the 'food chain' but I still don't like hordes of them flying round!

Sue, she sounds like the young girl in the garden along from and behind ours. The pitch of her scream is frightening ... :o(

Yes Lottie is a very excitable little girl but lovely with it, however her dad fixes lawnmowers, very noisy ones and he is going to get himself in trouble soon as its getting to be beyond a joke, really antagonizing the neighbours, for instance its 6-45pm, a lovely Sunday evening and he's still doing it....

Sue, methinks he needs to find himself a workshop or a garage to do the repairs.
