Unexpected garden visitors
24 comments
I know that Foxes do visit our back garden as their waste has been left, for me to dispose of, but I was very surprised to see an adult and a young one in the garden at 3.45 this afternoon.
They had no fear as I looked at them through the windows, perhaps they thought some food was on the way to them!
I know some folk think of Foxes as vermin but I am happy to see them looking so well, not scraggy and poorly as some often are.
I wondered how they get in but now I know as I saw them both leap over the fence into the neighbour’s garden.
Happy Christmas everyone.

Julia, the last photo shows a smaller Fox, but they were both in the garden at the same time!

Oh yes I can see now Shirley...do you hear them at night?

We have heard them occasionally, a truly scary sound sometimes. Screaming, like something from a horror film ... :o(

I thought how healthy they look too, no mange. I think someone must be feeding them.

they are important animals in the ecosystem and it saddens me when people persecute them.
we have several in our village that look healthy too. I dont put food out for them though.

I used to get them here but seems to have disappeared.
I wouldn't hurt them but it was so annoying when they were digging up my garden, almost uprooted a small tree once.

A couple years ago a fox walked quite boldly into my garden carrying a McDonalds food bag in his mouth as if it was the most natural thing to do, got himself quite cosey and then eat the contents, I didn't notice a drink though, and he left the the rubbish behind lol. Was the most comical thing I have ever seen . Merry Christmas all.

Loved reading all the comments. At 10.45 this morning I saw the senior Fox appear from behind our little summerhouse and walk along our garden path. He must have really squeezed into the narrow gap between the garden fence and summerhouse!

They are beautiful Shirley :)

Hywel, I agree with you, and the senior one looked so sad, no fear when it saw m at the window either. While we were in the kitchen at 1.30 today, he was walking across the flat roof extension of a bungalow behind ours so he can obviously jump high!

They are beautiful Shirley, I hope they're not too hungry. Let's hope they will return to their own home. You wouldn't want to start leaving food for them else they'll never go home.
Lovely Christmas visitors though..x

They are beautiful animals. I am giving you a gold star for these cute pictures Shirley_tulip.
We do not have foxes on our Island. We have raccoons, rabbits, deer and lots of squires showing on our trail cameras every night.
Occasionally a bear. They can be a problem in the neighbourhood as they go after garbage cans for food.

Meant to say squirrels.

They do look healthy as if someone has been feeding them. Perhaps they've decided to try out other homes just to see if they are successful elsewhere as well.

Janey, they haven't been seen in the garden for 4 days, which doesn't mean they've moved on, just not seen!
The only time I put any food out is first thing in the morning, even then it's only old bread and the Seagulls are in within seconds for it.

Klahanie, a gold star is much appreciated, thanks so much! Other than domestic cats, rarely a squirrel and many birds we don't have many animal visitors.

Bernie, that was my thought too. No doubt they are being fed somewhere close by.

What a nice surprise, Shirley! We don't normally see them around here but years ago when I was doing the evening shift in a factory & was returning home I used to go down a very narrow path a couple of minutes from our place & I saw a fox. It also saw me & for a few minutes we both stood looking at each other.
That's the only time I've been that close to a fox in my entire life.

David, they haven't been seen in our garden since, but that doesn't mean they're not still coming in!

Yes, they're wily creatures, aren't? They most often prefer to keep out of sight even though they have become more daring now.

Sadly, we sometimes see dead Foxes on the nearby dual carriageway ... :o(

That is a shame, Shirley! We sometimes see dead rabbits or hedgehogs or even a pigeon but nothing bigger. But then we seldom travel much & the only dead animals we see are around town.

I think it's because there is so much new housing built, or being built, around us that the Foxes are losing their habitat ... :o(

That one looks very handsome Shirley and as you say in good condition...I think I prefer them to the badgers we have here...so much damage.
