Seaside planting in the shingle.

On the shingle beach to the West of Worthing in West Sussex an area was planted up some years ago, when there were drought conditions, 2006/2007, with plants able to cope with only rainfall, no added watering.

It has flourished since then, as the photos show.

We took a leisurely stroll on a sunny, but breezy day, yesterday morning.

Feeling thirsty, must have been all that salty air, we crossed over the road into Marine Gardens where Bowls are played, the gardens are attractive with a small pond and water feature.

These round, fat Kniphofia were something I had never come across before and I wonder if they are K. rooperi. Perhaps somebody would confirm that for me please.

We entered the cafe/restaurant and were delighted to meet up with an old friend of Michaels who normally frequents the place on a Monday but chose Wednesday this week … fate or co-incidence?

We sat and reminisced over our drinks, a lovely morning all round and if this blog does get published that will cap it all!

I know the area you were in.I always go down that end of Worthing as I don’t much like the town. Nice seeing all the plants that grow on the shingle. I’ve seen those Kniphofias, don’t know which variety they are though. Glad that you had such a nice day out & met up with a friend.

Loved the coastal stroll Shirley and seeing the shingle garden. Wonderful light you have there too.
I'm not sure the kniphofia is rooperii, I have it and it's more of a triangle shape and flowers in October.
Great that you met up with an old friend too.

A lovely place to go for a stroll Shirley and finish it up with a cuppa and a chat to an old friend.
Maybe you could go on google asking for pictures of this plant and you may find it on there.

There is a good article on Wikipedia about this Red Hot Poker:

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments. I cannot find another Kniphofia that looks like these stubby ones other than rooperii.

I shall enquire at Worthing Council Parks and Gardens for an I.D. and report back!

Interesting to see the plants growing through the shingle, it's wonderful how some plants have adapted to living in such difficult habitats.

The park looks peaceful, and it must have been a lovely surprise for you to meet someone Michael knew - it's nice to catch up with old friends.

I have received the following message this morning:

Good morning Shirley
The information I have about the red hot pokers are:
Kniphofia 'Lemon Popsicle' https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/322091/kniphofia-lemon-popsicle-pbr-(popsicle-series)/details
(Red hot poker)
KTK Kniphofia 'Tawny King' https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/115125/kniphofia-tawny-king/details

This is from the plant list and plans used so should be accurate.
Best regards

Well, I can only think they are growing in some incredible compost as the Lemon Popsicle I once had was a spindly little plant ... :o)

Hywel, I am always surprised at how many plants grow through the sand and the shingle locally.

Really loved your blog, Shirley!!! Felt like I was there with you, beautiful scenery too. The shingle planting is really nice, very attractive. I do love kniphofia, planted one last August..no sign this year :-(

That was a lovely day for you Shirley, I love my town but often yearn for a walk along the beach, our nearest one is over 60miles away, we haven't been at all this year..
Thanks for sharing your day with us, lovely blog and photo's..x

what a lovely day out. Glad you enjoyed it and always a bonus to catch up with friends.

Kate, I have found that snails love to hide within the foliage, it may be worth checking if your plant is still there, albeit a smaller one!

Hello Sandra, it must be a while since you were in Worthing as this was planted up around 2006 I believe! There is a fairly wide promenade to walk along, too risky walking on the shingle these days.

Sue, when we lived in Chesterfield years ago, the thing I missed most was the seaside. I never take it for granted living here, even though we don't see it every day!

Eileen, I can't get over meting him as it was unplanned, a lovely surprise.

Oh yes, that’s made a lovely beach garden. I’m not familiar with those ‘fat’ pokers but they are great. Very tropical looking!

Karen, I am still confused as to why those Kniphofia flowers are so 'rounded' ... they must be loving the salty sea air!

Do you think it’s all down to the drainage? I remember being staggered at how well plants grew in builder’s sand in my Carnoustie house (new build). It was quite a lesson.

Karen, I really couldn't say as I've no idea what the soil type is in those gardens!
