Beautiful shirley, weve just come back from Westdean Garden Chichester.

That was lovely Shirley, pitty about the rose garden, I hope something can be done to save it.

I lived those roses, gorgeous, subtle colours..I do hope too, that they can salvage their rose collection or at least have another area filled with roses for all to enjoy. Fingers crossed!

As you say it's a shame about the rose garden - let's hope they get it sorted out over next winter.

A great visit Shirley..despite the phosphorus situation the roses you have shown are so beautiful....and having a tour guide topped it all.... good idea.

Did they explain how there came to be too much phosphorous? Was it over fertilised? What a shame!

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments. I have messaged Nymans re the Rose garden but not received a reply yet. There were many volunteers there, sadly not a member of the gardening team to ask about it. I shall report back should I hear further.

I have had a reply from Nymans Gardening team to my message:

We are aware that the Rose Garden isn’t at its best. Unfortunately, a combination of disease, challenging weather over the last few years, and an aging rose collection has resulted in many losses and overall poor plant health. Soil tests carried out earlier this year also showed up high phosphorus levels which is detrimental to the health of roses as it causes nutrient lock up in the soil. In autumn this year, we will begin the process of replacing all the roses in the Rose Garden, and improving the soil. The new planting scheme will include more early summer flowering shrubs and dense groundcover throughout, including a variety of early summer flowering perennials to compliment the roses. We are aiming to have all the replanting complete by the end of 2025 but as it will be done in stages, there will still be plenty to see next year.

It will be glorious when it’s finished. Ageing Roses are quite unsightly sometimes. And everything in a garden has a lifespan. They will be able to grow more modern plants in a more complimentary way. Lots to look forward to!

Thanks, Shirley, for posting their reply to your message. I've seen ageing roses over the years, as Karen says, they do become rather unsightly. Let's hope they plant more roses in another area of the gardens.

Apart from one small bit, it all looks amazing.
I have a phlomis in my front garden but forgot to take pictures of it.
I have tried to send you a message, but it won't send.
It is very hard to get in as well!

Rose, I have logged in today to find all of the photos I clicked on last week are coming up with Photo (untitled). I now have 4 messages from you and shall reply soon.

I've logged in today & found the site is about half way back to how it used to be! I found I had at least a dozen PMs waiting for me but when I went to open them I found they were all old PMs from earlier in the year which I'd already read! I'd even replied to some!

Still some things don't work as they should but it's getting back "on its feet"!

David, I'm ignoring my 230 PMs until the site has resumed normal service!

You will probably find you have read them, or answered, them all!

I noticed that the News feed is getting back to normal but the posts can't be marked as being read. Still some progress is being made! 👍 I see I have 16 PMs waiting to be read! I haven't bothered to open them as I'm not expecting any.

David, I can click on 'Stop Following' with success but not 'Seen' so it's another positive step.

This evening when I logged on I was able to see the News Feed as before & I was able to mark all the items as read once I opened them all! The site also seems to be running quicker than it has in at least 3 weeks! 👍

I do feel the site is slowly, very slowly, returning to how it should be. Positive thinking on my part perhaps?
