Tree Peonies

Don’t know if any of you remember those great tree peonies I bought in a newspaper offer back in 2010 from T+M, £14.99 including postage for 5!!! huge plants.
Well 3 were planted out immediately as I knew where they were going the other two were potted in huge pots till I decided where to put them, one pack even had two plants in but as one was quite small I planted them together, unfortunately we then had that awful winter and the two in pots didn’t survive, froze solid in the greenhouse, totally my fault , I was a bit disappointed though as one I lost was white and I was really looking forward to that one :-(
The first year they didn’t do a lot but one did have a flower, the next year they were a bit better and they all had 1 or 2 flowers the next year better still and starting to fill out with 3 or 4 flowers each, this year I’m so pleased with them the flowers are huge, but a strange thing happened,
this appeared to be two different plants!!, and would you believe it it looks like this is the one that had two plants in and it soon became clear that the greener section is white!!!
Here’s a few pictures of them all yesterday :-)

Thankyou everyone:-) these are planted at the bottom of the garden and must admit to going down there several times a day for a sniff and well just to stare really lol.
Good find Stripes!! I've never found one of these at any spring shows, be exciting to see what colour it is, don't forget the picture when it flowers ;-)
Yes so pleased the white popped up Scottish, don't think I'll risk splitting them up though red and white look quite nice together :-)
Do you Klahanie must check out your pictures, first time I've grown Tree Peonies and I love them too. They are expensive here in the garden centres so when I saw this offer thought it was worth taking a risk, so glad I did :-)

They are very nice, and I see why you like them. For me, it is another one of those plants I cannot grow because it is too warm.

Kathy, bought one last week locally, about a foot high and healthy for only £5.99, might go back for more as lots of varieties :)

Thanks Barbara :-), some very drunk looking bees in them yesterday, they were actually rolling around covered in pollen lol.
Aaaaw thats a shame Wylie the UK's weather does have irs advantages then ;-)
Bargain Dawn I'd go back and buy the lot!!! ;-), which colour did you get ?

Your two colour one may be the same plant as they graft quite a lot, think that's how they do them so cheap, I am thinking one may be the stock root growing as happens with Roses.

Never thought of that Bjs I must check at the base of the plant, are you supposed to cut it off then like with roses, will it weaken the red ?, just wish I'd made a note of the package that had two separate plants in.

Hi
I agree with "Bjs" that the root graft "sion" has produced a shoot , easy way to check it does not produce a woody stem , I have one doing the same thing and that is over 10 years old the flower is so pretty I dont want to rip off the main root plus its not taking over , the root sion in time does fade away as the main tree peony grows its own roots the trick is to plant deeper when planting which encourages the plant to root which you probably know anyway.
Yours all look to be in the ideal spot no shade and room to grow, you can get bargains with them now as you have proved , masses off them coming in from China, and to think they used to be so expensive now its the "Intersectional" are the must have and cost the earth !!
I have grown from seed I know it has a special name as one year the root grows then the following year the shoot grows, but it was the yellow species forgotten its name and the flowers quite small

That's strange I bought a yellow at Harrogate just been planting it out today can't wait for that one to flower :-)
They do get very large though don't they Rob curses every time he cuts the grass as they're already spreading over the border edge , oh well I'll just have to dig up more grass lol.

just read it all back, mine are at least a week or more from flowering I was just looking at the dates from 2014 , I planted out the Rockii last Autumn , as it stopped flowering in the pot and it has one huge bud so I done the right thing and has sent up lots of new growth from the ground
