Red in the morning, storm warning.

The reason for this blog is waiting for the rain to stop after torrential rain, thunder and lightning on our holiday to Sorrento, Italy.

On the eve of our arrival, a photo of Vesuvius across the Bay of Naples from Sorrento.

The next morning a beautiful sky,

But you know the adage ‘red in the morning, shepherd’s warning’.

It did stop raining long enough to have a walk to the fishing port.
Some plants we saw on the way.
The beautiful glossy wet bark of a Plane tree lining the road.

Succulent at the entry gates of one of the hotels, decorated with Tuff igneous rock. Probably from the slopes of the volcano Vesuvius.

And more huge succulents in the grounds of another hotel.

A tree, with incredible roots growing in one of the piazza.

And this large tree (about 10 m tall) with wonderful flowers. Magnificent.

that looked like the flowers of a lily.
Any one know what it is?

We have since managed visits to Pompeii and Herculaneum but don’t think the weather will be clement enough to go up to the crater of Vesuvius.
We shall see!

What a marvellous holiday! I hope you got to see Pompeii. Its amazing to think that vulcanologists think there should be another eruption before too long, and everyone just goes on living there as normal, just like last time...

That's a great pic of Vesuvius across the bay. Do you think that plane tree bark would make a good pattern for a silk scarf?

Smashing pics. That bark on the Plane almost looks like an abstract art work!

The tree could be a Plumeria (Frangipani)? so pleased you managed to get out and take some lovely photographs....

Sterogram, It would be wonderful if it stopped raining!!
Went up Vesuvius today cloudy to start but started raining when we were nearing the top. 300m vertical walk from the upper transit park along a reasonable path.
The last eruption was 1944. The volcano is constantly monitored for seismic activity. The vulcanologists believe that they could predict an eruption about 2-3 weeks before an occurrence, but since 25 million people live within a 25 mile radius, the logistics of an evacuation are hard to comprehend.

Paul, An abstract work of art and every tree a different pattern. As Stera suggests good for for ladies material.

Dd, have managed, I think, to find the tree's name :- Silk Floss Tree, Ceiba speciosa.

Glad you are having a wonderful holiday,Siris..Sorrento is our favourite place in Italy..and pleased you managed to get to the top of Vesuvius..just awesome, isn't it? Last summer I took photo's of the tree with the huge roots,in that Piazza, and a close up of the leaves for an ID,but sadly,no one seemed to know it's name...one day we might get back for another visit to Pompeii and Herculaneum..places you never forget...

Bloomer, the tree was on the right hand side of the Piazza, next to the bus station. Although we have not finished our holiday, we think we will return again, to do the sites we have not seen because of the bad weather. Capri and a boat trip along the Almalfi coast line. Forecast for heavy rain again tomorrow!! Must dry our shoes before tomorrow! Am going to post some pics of Vesuvius, but I think all us tourist must have been using the net earlier, cause it would not load photos.

Yes,I'm sure it was near the bus station,Siris..A shame you have had heavy rain, but I think it's a seasonal thing..We had it in Capri one year, and had to scramble on a shop window ledge,as it came down the street like a torrent.. but it soon cleared and the sun shone again..I will look forward to seeing your Vesuvius photo's,for some lovely memories...enjoy the rest of your holiday..lucky you ...

Wonderful photos of those contrasting skies. My favourite is the bark of the plane tree, I would frame that one!

I am sure you are having a really lovely holiday.

Thanks W Rose, the blue sky behind the tall cacti, is all we have seen, on the same walk, 10 minutes earlier than the plane trees.
