OH! WOW.

Went with OH to Hampshire Carniverous Plants today, so he could buy my birthday present.
Entering the green houses was a wow moment.
Although many of the varieties are beginning to go dormant for the winter.
I am only interested in the Sarracenia, many of which can be grown outside.
Tall ones.
Short ones.
Matthew, the owner gave me a lot of advice, not only on which would be good to supplement my collection, but also on the ones I have already.
I cannot show you until tomorrow what I will receive.
But I am already looking forward to Christmas.

Beautiful! A sea of pink. I saw some today too...on a much smaller scale, at St Andrews Botanic Garden. :)

Thank you Amy.
No Dd, he squeezed my visit in before going out himself.
Think of all the flies they must need, even though they have meagre appetites. Now that is a question. Do breeders need to breed flies or entice flies to reproduce in the greenhouses to satisfy their needs?

Food for thought lol.....

There were many questions I should have asked, but didn't think to, at the time.

I love sarracenia. When I was a child my Dad showed me them growing on the margins of a little swamp lake in our bush lot. He was upset because the beavers had moved in and dammed up the little stream that drained the lake...his "pitcher plants" and wild cranberries were being suffocated with water! i was enthralled with them... they had little blocks of ice in them (at this time of year) ...filled with insects! a great memory, thanks.
I can imagine bringing in some chrysanthemums with white fly... dinner is served! LOL...

Lori, that is so interesting. Hants C. P. had a range of very hardy Sarracenia, that grow in Canada, short squat pitchers a deep deep dark burgundy/black colour.

That is some place Siris. It was my birthday on Tuesday. I got a great book on ponds and small lakes and another on woodland plants. Adding to my knowledge for Sweden.
Happy Birthday!

Linda, Happy Birthday for last Tuesday. There seem to be a lot of us November babes around. Gardening/ plant presents are my ideal, even if I have to order them myself and take OH to buy them.

Thanks Gg, I have some info for you...... Was advised to cut off the developing flower head on that Sarracenia which was just starting to flower otherwise it would spend all its energy doing so, then the pitchers would die as normal overwinter and come next spring the plant would probably die as no energy left to regrow fly catching pitchers. Shame, but I have pruned off the flower. Went out to lunch with Dd and OH s.

Live and learn, mine have never done it before but will know just in case ... I think I may have a couple from where you went "mail order" ..... yes they do need to have a sleep over winter , I do keep them in the greenhouse but windows open during the day .... funny enough just come in from checking them all ..

It is not far from where I live. Open by appointment only, phoned up, went in to view and buy, couldn't have been more helpful with his advice.

the deep burgundy colour sounds familiar, Siris. They are delightful plants... the bushlot has since passed from family hands and it's been fifty years... I wonder if the plants are still there? ... probably a parking lot.
You are very fortunate that you have such a specialist nearby.

It is the only way to get what you really want Siris.

There are several old fashion general nurseries which I really like, around here and a big big company very close.
