When the snows have melted, except on the peaks, the sky is blue, time for some fresh air for the Marmottes.

Is the coast clear?

Time to admire the flowers

Gentians

Look for a few green shoots between the Alchemilla.

Mind the Edelweiss.

A quick game of tag.

What was that ? Did you hear something?

No it was nothing.

All that activity was exhausting. Need to lie down…

…before going back down…… before the lakes freeze and the snows start falling.

It is mid August after all at 2500 metres.

Thanks Ladies, the furry creatures are Marmottes. They live in burrows at altitude, emerging in April as the snows melt. Very nervous as predated from above by Eagles and Foxes on the ground, whistle an alarm call to communicate. They eat to fatten up, before going into their burrows to hibernate overwinter under the snow pack.

What a lovely blog and wonderful pictures, first time I've seen a marmotte what cute little creatures :-)

The adults are not that small, Simbad, size of a Dachshund.

They're fascinating. Did you hear the whistling sound they make? Love your mountain flowers, such a delight to come across.

Resi, snuck up on these ones, so they didn't know we were there. There is often a sentry posted on a look out, particularly if there are youngsters out of the burrow and then they give the sentry gives the alarm call and pandemonium occurs as they all shoot off underground.

Thank you Amy, the scenery is indeed spectacular but the environment can be harsh.

Thanks Maggie and Paul, As these are in the French Alpes have spelled Marmot the French way, well that's my excuse.
In the olden days used to be caught by mountain folk and their rendered fat used against rheumatism.

Oh my goodness, glad they don't do that anymore siris! ?
Bet they are happy about that too! Lol ?

Great fun - love the scene. Have you lived in the Alps, Siris, or was this a holiday?

24 Nov, 2016

Sheila, yes and yes. We do like to walk in the Summer, and watch the wild life.

26 Nov, 2016

How wonderful! We used to ski in the Haute Savoie when we lived in the Jura above Lake Geneva . . . Est ce que vous etes une francaise??

26 Nov, 2016

Non, Sheila, je suis anglaise, mais mon frère a épousé une française.

29 Nov, 2016

French certainly looks more authentic with its accents, which my computer doesn't always provide (but does sometimes - bewildering!). I just wondered because I'd never seen l'alhambre called that before . . .

29 Nov, 2016

Sheila, I don't speak or write Spanish, write French poorly, and speak it with an awful English accent. My IPad is always predicting my words, so if I don't check after writing there is sometimes some amusingly ridiculous text.

Mmmm - I know what you mean (nods sagely . . )
