Mistaken Identity

Last summer, we went off to visit a few gardens for pleasant afternoons out. A lovely change and relaxation after opening ours!

I kept seeing a very pretty shrub, and asked a garden owner what it was. It was Deutzia ‘Strawberry Fields’. Oooh, I did like it – and I wanted to grow one in my garden.

Having lost various shrubs in the winter, as you may remember, I found that I had space! I looked in several Garden Centres with no luck, so I turned to my trusty RHS ‘Plant finder’ book. I discovered a Nursery about an hour away from here, so I e-mailed them to check that they had one, and off I went to buy it.

I worked hard clearing the bank of Lamium galeobdolon to get it in, with some new planting to complement it – pink Aquilegias, white foxgloves and white Lunaria annua, plus two carpet roses and oriental poppies for later colour.

However, imagine my horror on seeing not pink buds, but white!

In the meantime, before the buds opened, I’d been out to meet Floribunda and her OH at a Garden Centre about half way between our homes, and the annoying thing was that they had ‘Strawberry Fields’ there. I didn’t buy one, as I thought I’d already got it! I did buy a very pretty Deutzia there, though – called ‘Rosealind’.

Well – I met the Nursery owner at a Plant Fair, and asked him if ‘Strawberry Fields’ should have white buds. He said no, it shouldn’t, and would I e-mail him a photo of it. He thought the labels must have got mixed up, and my white Deutzia was probably Deutzia pulchra. How disappointing!

Ah, but then I went back home via our nearest Garden Centre – and there it was – ‘Strawberry Fields’! Of course, I brought it home with me.

I was in for a pleasant surprise. The response to my e-mail was a large and heavy parcel by courier the very next day!

But – the flowers were nothing like the ones I’d seen last year, and I googled it to be sure. It wasn’t ‘Strawberry Fields’, that was certain.

Pretty, though, but what was this one? Grindle came up with the answer for me. It’s Deutzia scabra ‘Rosea Plena’.

So did I get my ‘Strawberry Fields’ in the end?

I did indeed. All that palaver – three Deutzias later, and there it is. I made a new space for it by removing some Spanish bluebells and cutting back a Viburnum tinus – so I’m happy now, after all that mistaken identity.

Good grief! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who gets silly mistakes. Mind you, at least yours was a lovely mistake, even if it didn't complete your carefully planned bed as planned! All three of them are quite beautiful aren't they. I only wish Deutzia had scent....do any of these...I've never seen one that does.

isnt that annoying when labels get mixed up. I am always amazed at how careless people are when looking at plants.

I regularly sell plants and the number of plants that get there tops snapped off too is horrifying. I remonstrated with a lady at my last plant sale. she snapped the bud off a poppy by being careless then deselected it for another one with a bud. She offered me £1 less for the broken one. 'After all it wont have flowers now this year'. I responded in the negative to her offer. She didnt buy in the end and to be honest I was glad.

So glad you got the one you wanted Spritz. A lovely selection of Deutzia plants now.
sent you a pm by the way :o)

Third time lucky then. I loved them all by the way.

Karensusan's right about them being beautiful mistakes! But I know from experience how disappointing it can be when plants don't turn out to be what you expected, especially when they're bulbs, and you don't know they're wrong for months! But your plants are beautiful, and I'm sure you can find a wee place to squeeze them in!

I admire your perseverence Spritz, they are all lovely, pleased you did get the right one in the end....

Wow Barbara, you don't give up do you but what a beautiful (if frustrating) journey you had. I'm glad you finally got the right one but your 'mistakes' are very pretty too. Lovely pics as usual.
I hope all went well at your Open Garden today without too many of those heavy showers we had here.

Oh Lily - we had three hours unremitting rain from 5 - 8 a.m. It still looked menacing, too - so OH went off and bought a cheapie gazebo from Argos to keep the plant sellers dry. We already have a large parasol for the ticket person. We were also short of helpers for various (good) reasons, so we rang our new ACO, who was only too pleased to help, and 'manned' the gate for us!

Lots of nice people, including Flori and her OH, and Micky45! What lovely surprises to see them. :-)))

Flori was of course interested in the Deutzia saga, having been a part of it, and she's seen them now in situ.

I'm glad I persevered - 'Strawberry Fields' is looking lovely. :-)) I do like the others, but 'SF' is my favourite.

You got it in the end though Spritz and that's what counts!

Pleased you got the right plant in the end, I really do like them all though, hope all went well on your open day, we had hoped to visit my sister and then come on to you but, she took herself off on holiday for a fortnight, some people!! we will get there sooner or later.

Hi Spritz \0/ There you all go again..having lovely times behind my back :-( Had to laugh though, all that palaver! My strawbery fields is about 4' 6" high....at the front.... behind which are the lovely flowers. these renegade front branches have just shot up and are sappy. Now what should I do? I was tempted to cut them off so i could see the flowers which are on low branches behind them. Will they bare flowers next year do you think? if so I'll leave them. Love your rosea plena by the way and I'm sure your all white bed will look marvellous:-))

Oh, Dd. What can I say? It would have been lovely to have you here. Another time? Just let me know if you come up this way. :-)) Private tours CAN be arranged! lol.

\0/ Ba - well, in a way it's funny. It all ended well, anyway. :-)) As I am a new 'SF' owner, I can't honestly say - but the rule of thumb for shrubs that flower now, like Philadephus, is to prune after they've flowered - and yes, I think you're right about the new growth having the flowers next year.

Guess what - all the petals got knocked off the white oriental poppies in that 'white' bed. Hmmph! Rain!! :-((

10 Jun, 2011

Oh booo - those white poppies were GORGEOUS!

10 Jun, 2011

Shame, wasn't it. At least 'you' saw them. :-) I haven't been able to dead-head them yet - it's been a very wet day.

10 Jun, 2011

Lucky me! :)

:-))

Crikey what a palaver, I bought Strawberry Fields a couple of weeks ago at my local garden centre to fill a gap where a hebe had died, just spotted it and had to have it,mine was in flower though, its a beauty such huge flowers, love it.

11 Jun, 2011

Just rubbing it in:-))

11 Jun, 2011

Great story Barbara, luckily with a happy ending. Strawberry Fields is beautiful.

11 Jun, 2011

It certainly is! I'd had it at the top of my 'wish list' since I saw it last year.

Simbad - that was the way to do it, buying it in flower instead of travelling round the County! lol. The GC where I finally bought it didn't have it previously - they'd obviously re-stocked.

11 Jun, 2011

Its so disappointing when that happens, you spend all that time and effort finding the right plant for your scheme only to find out that when it flowers its the wrong colour although I have to say the white does look pretty! Glad you got the one you wanted in the end! :-)

12 Jun, 2011

How interesting. Deutzia. Must explore. btw, love the fox gloves. Am about to sow some fg seeds in the hope of being able to bring on some plants for the shady border. Hope they eventually look as good as yours!

12 Jun, 2011

Thank you both - it was lovely to be able to plant the one I really wanted in the end.

Kowhai, I sowed some a few weeks ago, and pricked them out only yesterday. They germinated really fast and well. Good luck with yours! :-)

12 Jun, 2011

It Deutzya good to get what you fancy in the end Spritz!

15 Jun, 2011

Groan:-)

15 Jun, 2011

Double groan! ;-D)

15 Jun, 2011

I've just bought 'Strawberry Fields' and have yet to decide where to plant it - either along the straight new border next to the fence, or in one of the very small borders at the top of a bank. From what I've read, it doesn't seem too fussy.
Actually, I also think the white Deutzia that was a mistake looks splendid! I've just obtained 'Pride of Rochester'. Hope it looks as good as your Deutzia 'Pulchra'.
