A sad story.

A sad story – but a happier ending.

As you may know, we were flooded last November, and all the downstairs rooms had to be redecorated. My Orchids were moved upstairs into the spare back bedroom, and they didn’t like it there one bit.

My Dendrobium objected strongly to the lack of light, and soon turned up its toes.

It was over four months before we were able to move back downstairs, and I hadn’t taken care of the orchids – it was so disheartening to see them dropping their flowers, with discoloured leaves. Not only that, but to reach them, I had to clamber over all kinds of household things that has been shifted upstairs for the duration.

Such a shame – they were beautiful.

This was the first one I ever bought – it must have been at least fifteen years ago.

For reasons I won’t go into here, the window sills downstairs are now narrower than they were, so the pots wouldn’t fit there any longer – except one mini-orchid.

Eventually, we got everything sorted out, and I had a decision to make – I did think about passing on some of the orchids to friends, but to be honest, they were in such a poor state by then that I really didn’t make much effort.

Sadly, I took a black sack upstairs and tipped each sorry-looking plant into it.

All except one – the brave mini-orchid not only had a flower, but it was producing a new flower stem! I had to save it…and I had a brainwave through my tears at losing my friends.
I would start a new collection of mini-orchids!

So far, I’ve found five more to keep my brave little one company. The photo above is my favourite.

Then there’s a white one…

A cream one…

A lovely deep red one…

A pink one…

A very tiny one…

And the brave little original one! I think I’ve shown you all six.

I hope to track down more of them, but that’s the happier ending of my sad story for the time being.

Oh Spritz, the flood caused you such trouble

But to be honest I prefer the mini ones, and in the gc the other day was the tiniest I had ever seen......the flower smaller than my thumbnail.....

I do wonder if I should be brave too and just collect the little ones......

(I didn't put like as its a sad story x)

Love your miniature orchids. You are developing a beautiful collection. I have lost all but two of mine due to my neglect this year . I put them in my greenhouse and the got extremely burnt. I think I am going to look for some small ones like yours. Keep building up the lovely collection.

You Must Have Been Devastated. I'm happy You Have Had Some Better News With Your New Mini Collection . Let's Hope You Have A Much Better time In The Future.

13 Oct, 2013

now why didn't we think of this solution earlier.
I know how sad you were with the windowsill situation and the state of your orchids. But these are true little beauties.

13 Oct, 2013

You must have been gutted Spritz! It made me sad just reading - never mind having to go through all that.
No consolation - but all's well that ends.....
You have started a new collection and we will no doubt see many more additions. Nearly forgot to say - they are all gorgeous!

13 Oct, 2013

they look absolutely beautiful, how "mini" are they? i mean height of plant and size of bloom? make it easier for me to visualise them!

13 Oct, 2013

They are so beautiful. They do say when one door closes another one opens - and here's a collection that you probably wouldn't have thought of making before.

13 Oct, 2013

Beautiful, especially the first one. I'm glad your story had a happier ending. I also prefer the tiny ones. :)

13 Oct, 2013

Fran, the pots are about 3" ones, and the orchid flowers are less than an inch across, some even smaller.

They're not as obviously striking as the larger ones, but close up they're really lovely. I'm hoping that the GCs will get more stock in for Christmas. I'd love some more to add to the collection! (hint, hint to relatives. lol.)

I did ask the Insurance Assessor if I could put my Streptocarpus plants on the list, but the orchids hadn't suffered by then. I think we got a small amount for ruined plants. The industrial fans wrecked them! (The noise of them almost wrecked me, too...)

14 Oct, 2013

I'm so glad that's all behind you Barbara...it was devastating for you. I remember how shocked I felt when I saw those awful photos. Isn't it amazing how your plants mostly took it in their stride! :))

14 Oct, 2013

Spritzhenry...you have done well with the Mini-Orchids.

14 Oct, 2013

Oh they are so very dainty, I just love them, a very happy ending, good luck with your collection B you need some good luck. xx

14 Oct, 2013

I do like happy endings and you seem to be a whizz at turning misfortune into smiles. Thank for sharing your lovely collection with us.

14 Oct, 2013

Thanks, Dd and Scotsgran. I was upset at the time, but it was rather minor in the scheme of things, wasn't it, compared with all the damage. It's nice having the mini-ones though. :-)))

Karen, I hope no other GOY members ever have to go through it! I'm waiting for Mark to build next door's walls to make us safe from another bout of flooding...that should be November, *if* he's on schedule.

15 Oct, 2013

fingers and everything else crossed for you, Spritz!

15 Oct, 2013

Thanks, Fran. I bet Mark won't get here in November - all this wet weather will have changed his plans. :-(( I won't be able to relax until the flood defences are complete.

16 Oct, 2013

awwwwwww, is there an anti-rain dance??

16 Oct, 2013

If there isn't, there should be!

17 Oct, 2013

lol maybe do a rain dance backwards? hope the weather will behave until you can get hte wall sorted

17 Oct, 2013

Me too, Fran!

18 Oct, 2013

Typically you Spritz to turn dissaster on its head - I can see that you are already getting pleasure from your mini collection. Hope the wall problem is sorted soon as it seems that this rain is not going to end soon.

18 Oct, 2013

I'm really going to have to research mini orchids; i'd never heard of any such thing till this blog, and they do look awfully pretty.

18 Oct, 2013

Stroller, we're already making 'Plan B' in case next door's wall is delayed. It's almost a year since we had the torrents of rain and it could happen again.

I do like the new mini-orchids, but they're not as immediately beautiful as the larger ones - you have to stop and look more carefully as you pass.

19 Oct, 2013

I like stories with happy endings and I am so thankful that yours has one too.

It must have been dreadful for you and hard to imagine. I hope now that you can rebuild your collection of beautiful orchids whether tiny or big - you deserve them :-)

19 Oct, 2013

Thank you, Wildrose. :-))

20 Oct, 2013

They might be tiny Spritz but are very pretty, its a shame you lost all the others but at the time orchids were the least of your problems, hoping and praying you do not get another flood with or without the wall.....

21 Oct, 2013

amen to that!

21 Oct, 2013

I'm already getting twitchy - we've had torrents of rain and there's more to come, so the forecast said. Eeek!

23 Oct, 2013

We had a glorious summer, much better than for years, but the rain recently has been far heavier too. We will keep our fingers crossed that the rain falls up north until that wall goes up.

23 Oct, 2013

I'm watching the level of the stream, and it's getting wider at the ford every day. I've got everything crossed, listening to the dire forecast!

24 Oct, 2013

would the DEFRA map give early warning? I do'nt know if alerts can be set up

24 Oct, 2013

just seen on BBC news site, storms expected on Monday for south of Engoand - are you in that area??

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24654390

24 Oct, 2013

We will all be hoping that all the other measures that have been taken elsewhere in the neighbourhood alleviate any danger of flooding that may come your way.

24 Oct, 2013

Yes, Fran. Unfortunately! :-O The Environment Agency send out flood warnings, but not for our particular area because we have brooks and streams, not rivers. We did ask them, but they won't help. :-((

Scotsgran, yes, they've cleared the sluice gates where the brooks meet the Bristol Channel, but that isn't enough to stop our stream from flooding because the water comes off the Quantock Hills as well as building up where the ground is so sodden already. We just have to hope and pray!

25 Oct, 2013

We will all be thinking of you

25 Oct, 2013

We will - I think about you often when the rain is heavy.

25 Oct, 2013

seems a tad daft, Spritz! brooks and streams flow into rivers, whch can backfill and overflow from river flooding. Surely ANY waterway is a potengial source and should be included - mayeb that adds up to too many for the mapping and predcition.

Do you know where your local waters eventually end up? I mean, which river-s? at least you might be able to check for that and extrapolate backwards

25 Oct, 2013

They go into the Bristol Channel, Fran...

I'm touched that people are thinking about me! :-))

26 Oct, 2013

so glad the one survivor gave you the oomph to collect them again Spritz. they look beautiful..

30 Oct, 2013

Hallo Sandra - thanks! :-))
