Hi all update on the garden makeover as promised, we are lucky as our garden faces south to south west so we have sun most of the day even down in the woodland dell. The only shade is under the oak and laurel trees at the top of the bank where we have planted up some shade loving plants and put a swing seat to look at the view and garden. We wanted somewhere to sit in the shade by the veg plots which are by the kitchen. The only place that offers some shade is by the fence so we decided to build a raised patio that would complement the veg beds we had already built.

We got to work this weekend to make some steps up to the patio and to fill in the retaining wall Paul had built last weekend. We used the turf that had been dug out to make the steps to fill in the retaining wall. It was hard work as the old conifer roots had to be dug out with a pickaxe and sods law they went all the way down the slope. We hope to get some plants down the sides of the steps next weekend and start laying the weed suppressant. We have 20 tons of shingle being delivered over the next few days, so we may even be able to start laying that down as well. All the veg beds are now full with topsoil and compost but I’m letting the soil warm up a wee bit before I plant out the seed potatoes.
Just need the weather to hold out for us next weekend, fingers crossed! the large Nome on the patio is me lol PS snapped the tail end of a rainbow last week hope you all find a pot of gold!

Ten out of ten for effort - its coming on a treat. I love your rainbow picture. Did you find any gold? There should be celandines and later some dandelions if all else fails!

No gold found so far :-( lots of old bottles and rubbish when we cleared the dell, and we have loads of celandines, I like them. I know they can be invasive but I let them run wild down in the dell they help keep the bank from eroding away. They have started to creep up the garden towards the bungalow so will have to keep them in check if I don't what them taking over.

It looks lovely, Teds. I really like the slope with the seat at the top - what a lovely place to sit. The wildness at the bottom of the slope is very attractive. (I love a bit of "wild" in the garden!). Such a lot of work - good luck with the rest of it. Is that beautiful rainbow picture part of the view from your garden?

Hi Melchisedec! yes the rainbow pic was take at the bottom of the garden. We are very lucky the garden backs on to the Devon countryside and there is a foot path that runs along the side. We often get nice comments from the locals when they stop for a chat when I'm weeding in the dell. Most have followed the gardens progress over the year and are so pleased that it is being brought back to life. Some times they leave us plants for the garden. People can be so kind!

Thank you Simbad it has been hard work but we are stating to see light at the end of the tunnel now. Although just had the 20 tons of shingle delivered onto the front drive and it looks an awful lot to shift round to the back garden. O well! it will keep us out of mischief lol

20 tons!!! Oh my! Good luck with that.

What a glorious position for your lovely garden. While you are moving that shingle, think about relaxing with a glass of something nice and admiring the view!

Thanks all for your nice comments, may be able to post some pics up next week just need to see how things progress this weekend. We need to shift some of the shingle as the front garden isn't very big, so it is blocking the drive. The post man ( bless him! ) is kindly climbing over the shingle to get to the front door at the moment.
