Front garden fun

I love heathers and this one flowers faithfully, every winter, currently brightening up the path leading to my front door …
Nearby, the bulbs are continuing to sprout …
Last autumn, I was short of time, energy and money (what’s new ?) so, wishing to add to my front garden bulbs, I bought just whatever bargains Lidl had on special offer ! It will be interesting to see what comes up.
The Lidl 60 Narcissus Botanical, shown on the left below, were packaged in cute packs, but all neatly inside the box, so I couldn’t examine them till I arrrived home, but, when unwrapped, they looked amazingly good quality, so I have high hopes of happy results.
This bulb stem is so strong it has pushed up the rock above it !
The sarcococca grows by my drive. It is looking perky, with flowers and berries on the same branches …
Meanwhile, the elderly mermaid surveys the scene … she must be feeling chilly … should I give her a knitted coat ?
… and up above, young JR Junior … Garrya elliptica James Roof … is waving his tassels in the winter sunshine …
Possible snow on the way, so stay safe everyone !

Longing to see a huge display of miniature narcissus! Perhaps your Sarcococca would give mine a few lessons??
Your front garden is all set for loking a dream once again...

Thanks Stera .. Is your Sarcococca giving you problems ? Mine is very hardy and reliable, but never seems to have much scent.

Love it when you plant new bills always a surprise or a shock!! I have tassel envy

Thanks Dotty ... This winter JR jr doesn't have many tassels because I trimmed him last summer. In general, the Garrya James Roof does seem fickle about whether or not to grow tassels... lately Junior has been more reliable than his Dad about producing tassels !

Lovely blog TT, those bulbs will be gorgeous, I love mini bulbs.
My Sarcococca doesn't smell much either stera, I thought it was a problem with my nose, perhaps it is the plant :o)

Hi Seaburngirl .... yes I think some Sarcococca plants just do not have much scent !

I've had bulbs and seeds from Lidl in the past and all have done well TT. Despite the cold, things are waking up. I heard a blue tit this morning singing his little heart out.

Glad to know your Lidl bulbs did well Waddy... looking forward to colourful results with mine ! Yes, the garden birds are becoming more active.

J ... Interesting to know that other Sarcococcas are lacking scent. Encouraging to read good reports of the Lidl bulbs... fingers crossed for mine.

Thanks Hywel and 3d ...
We'll know springtime has definitely arrived when the elderly mermaid refuses her knitted coat and puts on a bikini.

Hi Callie ... thank you...
let's hope the bulbs do well.

The best is yet to come Terra ! I love the Spring, but this new garden won't have any surprises due to the thick membrane and gravel, although I did bring some bulbs with me and put them in pots.
I love your Saroccocca and forgot to bring mine, so that's another added to my shopping list.
As usual your garden will look beautiful come Spring !
No snow here yet !!

Thanks Rose ... you did well to bring plants with you from your previous property, but it is understandable you wouldn't remember to collect them all. Let's hope your bulbs in pots do well.

I love heathers too but failed miserably at every attempt to grow them. Yours looks lovely.
3 Feb, 2019
Hi Ginellie.... thanks... have you checked that you're planting the correct heathers for your soil-type ? e.g. Callunas like rich acidic lime-free.
3 Feb, 2019
Thanks Terra, I will check and try again because I do love heathers.
4 Feb, 2019
Yes, Ginellie ... do try again with heathers... check on Callunas and Ericas ... investigate which are most suitable for your garden soil.

Just seen your lovely blog, TT! But I detect an absence! Are the garden workers on strike? Don't you give them enough "pay" (perhaps a few more of their favourite biscuits might tempt them back into the garden!) π
Never grown anything from Lidl's, well that brings to mind a year or so ago I did buy some Pansies & they did very well I seem to remember!
My son has bought many plants from there in the last couple of years & they have always grown very well for him. It's a bit of the "beaten track" for us to go there.
