I still have 8 different varieties of Nerines from the Exbury Collection yet to bloom before I write a blog on them, so I have been experimenting with backgrounds. Some are difficult since the bulbs are in the ground, or at least a raised bed. This is ‘Fairy Dawn’, which is in the ground.

Most of the bulbs are in pots, so I can move them around and it is easy to change the background. The one I keep using is my house, which is grey and provides a solid but rough background.

This is ‘Shaka Zulu’, and so far is my favorite. I have tried different materials as backdrops, and one is a shelf insert that is black.

The shelf insert does have a problem if the sun really beats down on it.
Here is ‘Amschel’ and the insert gives a faded black look.

But using it when it is overcast gives a great look for the brighter varieties, like ‘Hiawatha’.

I can use this photo as the background on my computer screen without having to make the image a widescreen size.
Something else I have been trying is a sheet of styrofoam. It gives a white background.

I have some in the ground, near a concrete wall, and by getting the right angle, the pattern of the bricks add some interest. Here is ‘Troubled Dreams’ that is just starting to open.

At the othe end of the raised bed is a wrought iron gate that I’m saving for something. ‘Copperhead’ is in front of it, and another type of background.

So while I wait for those 8 to open, I will continue to try different backgrounds.
