Flowers on Dec. 25th
7 comments
I went out this morning and took photos of some of the flowers I have open today.
There are, of course some daylilies, but they don’t open as well as they could because of it being overcast and temperatures around 17°C.
I get several bromeliads opening, and here is Billbergia nutens from the side and from above.
With the shorter days, the Bird of Paradise is opening.
A double Dahlia imperialis has been in flower since November.
I got lucky this year. Earlier in the spring, strong winds took out my poinsettia bush. I should have pruned it better, but it was about 10 ft. tall. To my amazement, a little seedling popped up during the summer, and it is now about 6" tall. It changed color on schedule, and there are the little flowers in the center.

How amazing that you can grow these out in the middle of the Atlantic! It always amazes me. Since seeing your photos I have researched the Azores a few times and wow, what a beautiful place to live. :)

Thanks! The next group of plants getting ready to flower are some Aloes. The South African bulbs are doing really well and have lots of foliage. My main problem this year is a nest of ground wasps. They set up a nest under a daylily and I am trying to exterminate them, but with little success.

Lovely to see what plants are flowering in your garden on Christmas Day, Wylie! 👍
My Bird of Paradise has finished flowering. I don't think it will have any more flowers till next year as I can't see any more scapes forming.
Hope you have a great new gardening year 2024. 👍

My regular Bird is in flower, and the Black & White one will be pushing out buds soon. It is about time to start the seeds that are done 8-10 weeks before last frost.
Hope you have a wonderful gardening year.

It's nice to have flowers this time of year, and great to see your Poinsettia flowering too.
My Bilbergia nutans flower later on and they have to be kept in the greenhouse in the winter.
