WAS IT WORTH IT.....WE THINK SO.....

You may, or may not remember my blog re taking out a Privet hedge at the back of the garden, should we or should we not? well we did, so we then had to replace the hedge with some fencing…. this is what the garden looked like when the hedge had been removed and the new fencing had been installed remember?

The area was over 32 ft wide and whatever size we wanted it to be in depth…….so loads of space!! my Birthday was in October so OH gave me plants of my choice…and my friends gave me garden tokens…..such joy, decided to go with a lot of evergreen shrubs, we already had trees and other shrubs that needed moving, so the space was filled pretty quickly, we decided to add more panels down the side of the garden which has made the job a lot longer……then we decided to add a rose arch (as you do) all being well that should be in this weekend, had to wait until SILs were free, as it is very heavy and very large, roses waiting to be planted also clematis and possibly Solanum.
Here are the pictures…….

Stepping stones have been added to make it easier to get to the top of the garden…….

The area is difficult to photograph because there is an empty bed in front of this new border which will contain all the tropical plants.
The last photo shows you the arch waiting to be put in….

Decided to paint the arch Bramble we have rather a lot of green in the garden it will match an obelisk (to be made) for the golden hop, and the roof of the Dovecote.
Well hope you found my blog interesting, do you think we made the right decision, or should we have kept the hedge?

I never regretted taking out our privet hedge many years ago, Daisy. It gained us loads of garden space.
Yours now looks really nice.

No, I think you made the right choice taking out the hedge. It now looks great - just wait until next summer!

I'm gobsmacked - how did you do all that in the time? Brilliant.

Looks really great, you did the right thing, love the selection of plants, the fence is a beautiful colour it goes very well with the planting scheme. Well done.

Oh that looks really nice DD. I shall look forward to seeing it next year.

Definitely did the right thing DD! It has given the garden a whole new lease of life and more opportunity for your lovely jungly plants and evergreens. I love you new fence panels, and the colour of the arch is also lovely! My new Graham Thomas climbing rose arrived today for my triple arch. I'll get it planted tomorrow and hopefully it will flower next summer. I also moved my jasminum revolutum on to the arches and am hoping it will survive the move and enjoy the sunshine. It's evergreen which is a bonus!

I think I said 'dont do it Dd', but on reflection, you made the right decision Dd. The fence and surrounding area look fab and come spring things will grow and you would never know you even had a hedge there! Brilliant.

Karen thank you glad you think we did the right thing......Grandmage thanks for that, so many of our friends and family said not to take the hedge out, but OH was getting fed up with cutting it four times a year.

I agree. You definitely did the right thing. It's all looking really good.

We have a laural hedge edging one side of our garden that I would love to replace, the trouble is, it's not our hedge....

What a difference Angela ,it's added a whole new dimention to your garden and made a lot more space for more plants , isn't that a shame Lol ... I love that little hut in the corner it makes me want to peep inside .....

hope the musa survive Dotty, fingers crossed as they are surpose to be quite hardy arent they, certain ones :o)

9 Dec, 2011

Amy thanks, it has certainly changed the back of the ga rden, made it more interesting, the little hut is one of three sheds all identical, did not have room for a large one.
San and so do I......it came through last year ok.

10 Dec, 2011

Well, in my humble opinion you definitely did the right thing with disposing of the hedge, Dotty! ... I have just looked back at the blogs of your Open Day last May and the space you have gained for planting is incredible ... I do like the stepping stones and the new arch ... hope to see it 'in the flesh' next year ... :o)

10 Dec, 2011

Like everybody else above I agree that you did the very best in getting rid of it! Apart from giving your husband a rest from cutting it so often it has opened up so much space to grow lots of interesting things! I love how you've made such a difference! Anyway I believe Privet is a soil impoverisher. Few plants can survive near it. The paving stones are also a nice touch! :-))

11 Dec, 2011

Shirley bless you.....so pleased you approve, it would be lovely to see you and your OH again, as long as the wind leaves us some plants, we have a very strong winds and heavy rain here at the moment....how abut you?
Balcony you are right about Privet it had ruined the soil, it was like sand, glad you like the stepping stones.

12 Dec, 2011

Very windy here at 6pm ... blustery showers too with a forecast of 70mph winds from midnight ... I hope there is no damage to our gardens ... :o((

12 Dec, 2011

Rained all night, gale force winds.......lovely this morning though but a very cold wind, looks as if Winter has arrived.

14 Dec, 2011

Much the same here, Dotty ... dark as night still ... at 08.45 ... :o(((

14 Dec, 2011

Some rain here overnight, too. Winds still strong during most of the day but now they have calmed down & the sky is clear.

Shame they weren't clear last night as there was a meteor shower - the Geminids. They come around every year about this time. Never managed to see them yet! ;-((
