My back garden - then and now

When I moved here the back garden had no fences and just one huge shrub in the middle of the plot, plus a birdtable (which is still going strong!) You can tell I began work on the shrub very soon!
The fence, along the back and one side, was erected the day after I moved in (dogs and tortoises had to be kept safe) as a ‘new home’ present from my lovely daughters and their families. The garden has changed a few times, been under 6-8 inches of water once, had 4 large branches crashing down in windy weather, bringing with them live electricity cables. You can see the two forks of one willow tree that caused a lot of damage in later years above the enormous conifer hedge of my then neighbours (both hedge and neighbours now gone!)
In this next photo you can see the trunk of one willow after the two forks landed, one in my garden and the other in my neigbours (on separate occasions). Only one fork remains on the other tree in this photo and we were assured that this was safe as, if it fell, it would go the other way! Wrong – it landed across the two gardens about 3-4 years ago, taking out three fence panels and my rose arch and a decking area in the neighbouring garden. I was not happy!
….and this is how it is now, the flowerbed across the middle has gone but the side ones have been widened, a greenhouse was purchased about 5 years ago, everything has grown, some plants had to go (a lovely fir tree that just grew too big too quickly) and others have taken their place.
I’ve decided I need more colour so that will be my aim for next year!
PS – Apologies for the washing line and contents!!

What a transformation. Just goes to show what people and nature can do when they work together. Sometimes nature has other ideas but we soon get the message don't we (e.g. the too big fir tree!) It looks beautiful. congratulations.

You've made some good changes over the years Gee.
Don't worry about the clothes line I thought those were an essential part of a garden :o)

your garden plan has inspired me. I am halfway through designing my partner's new plot and have been struggling to think of how to foreshorten the garden. your central bed which cut the garden in two is just what I can do (or at least adapt).
well done on a great job, and thanks for your help.

I love seeing before and after pics, and yours, Gee, shows a magical transformation (with a little help from Mother Nature). You have done so well, and the result is blooming marvellous! :-)

Thank you, Lincslass and David, Mother Nature did all the clever stuff, I just stuck things in the ground :)

And on the washing line, too!, it would seem! Glad to see no real "bloomers" there! Sorry, just my daft sense of humour rearing its ugly, late-night head.
Keep Going - it is trully magnificent!!! :-)

Thanks, David. Please don't apologise for your sense of humour, it's what makes GoY the fun that it is! If 'bloomers' had been hanging on the washing line, I would have censored the photo :)

Lovely job youve created a real haven for yourself there. It is sad when you run out of things to go at though, i agree we could all do with just a bit more ground Keep up the good work and look after those crnchy meat pies theyre becoming very hard to get hold of these days!

Thanks for your kind comments, Indypendant. I will certainly look after my trio of 'pies' - the garden is their haven too :)
