After the rain........

I don’t know about you, but over the last few days we have had such a mixture of weather…..not quite four seasons in one day, but definitely three!
Sudden downpours with lashings of rain have battered the garden, the wind whipping up over the walls, catching the eucalyptus branches and sending a scattering of yellow leaves along the grass. The lower leaves of the cordylines have fallen like a trellis over the borders beneath, I suppose that saves me a job of pulling them off later in the year…:o)
Then we have had still sunny moments of pure heat, where the flowers have flagged again….almost gasping for breath, with their backs to the wall. As the sky darkened with such amazing cloud shapes, the shadows lengthened and the heavens opened again…..out you go again…chairs folded up in record time, doors closed, whilst the lines of grey hit the grass and bounce clean off as it is rock hard!
I think we’re the only nation that is obsessed as we are with the weather, it is so unpredictable though, and scuppers all your plans….then when you’re just about to tear your hair out……….at sundown it smiles down having a right old chuckle and sends you glints of gold and silver, peaches and cream and the most fantastic rainbow ever!!!

Oh if only we could read the time on the Church clock at 9.20 every evening, I've noticed the nights drawing in already. I laughed when I read about you folding up the chairs in record time, I can just imagine you saying 'golly gosh another shower, how quaint'. It's amazing how the plants cope with such swings in the weather. The worst is when the flowers get soaked and the wind gets up. We as a nation are always talking about the weather, especially bad weather, maybe that's why we're so resiliant, lets face it we have to be pretty stoic to put up with it. I suppose it does make us all the more appreciative when it's on it's best behavour. Your pics capture the tranquel scene beautifully, nice blog Janey.

I think the weather is having a good laugh at our expense Janey, it really seems to be getting its own back after the lovely Summer we`d been enjoying. Like you, my garden has certainly taken a battering. The good weather should be back next week...fingers crossed...lol! :o))

Enjoyed your blog, and the photos were your usually high standard, the weather is very peculiar, thought it was Spring again what with sunshine and showers, the wind does play havoc with the plants though could do without that.

Ooh I hope so Labdancer.........it is only July, but it seems later to me...already we've lost an hour of light...:o( Still we're not stuck at some airport....waiting for a plane that'll never fly as the company has gone bust,,,,I can't imagine how bad that must be especially if you have children with you too....worst nightmare!
Thanks Moti and Mrsmelon.....
I bet you could Dd.....you're going to have to book some calm and sunny weather next year!....:o)

I will have to say a few prayers.......
17 Jul, 2010
Up here in the North West we're torn, on the one hand we want dry weather but we also want the hosepipe ban to end. In your prayers, would it be 'cheeky' to ask for the rain to fall only at night.

Wonderful photos Janey. It's worth puting up with the rain to get such fantastic skies afterwards :o)

If only it would happen like that Heron........today it is the Open gardens in our village, and it is pelting down!
Thanks Hywel.....they were especially vivid skies...:o)

I enjoyed your blog Janey. The winds have been awful here and thanks to the combination of the wind and rain, alot of my plants are flat.

Great skies & lovely shots of the rainbows, Janey! Your honeysuckle looks great! :-)
I lived in the centre of Spain for many years & the changes in the weather were much, much slower than here. I taught English to the people & my students & I would comment at times on the British people's love of talking about the weather. They found it strange & wondered how we could talk about the weather more than anything else! I used to tell them how the weather could suddenly change 3 or 4 times a day & they found it incredible!
Since returning to the UK 9 years ago I often remember our conversations when we have days of rapid change!

I love the rainbow pics Janey. I was picking blackcurrants yesterday. One minute I was being rained on with incredibly wet rain, the next I was gasping for air - it was as though I was stood in an oven. Most strange. However I am pleased to report, the weeds seem to be loving it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o)

Gee Dawn and Holly...thanks for your lovely comments......the wind had blown itself out here today....and it is a hot and humid afternoon....lovely though...:o)
I treated myself to a New Dawn climbing rose over the weekend Dawn, so looking forward to planting that.........
Balcony....when we lived there, the locals would laugh at us Brits discussing the weather...though we lived in the path of the Mistral. One winter there was heavy snow and were they fussy!! Out came the cameras, the shop girls were in the streets amazed as it was the first time they had seen snow...as quick as it came it went.....thank goodness...Lol!
Thanks Jane......certainly helps things grow.....like you say all the stuff you don't want lol....mmm....blackcurrants.....:o)

The weather is alas, not as consistent as your fabulous shots, once again.
Very nice indeed.

Breathtaking photo`s really enjoyed seeing them Janey. I think we are having a most pecular year all told, is it me or do others think the flowers dont seem to be lasting as long as usual.

Pleased you enjoyed them Ob and Stroller.....thank you for the great comments...yes I think so too Stroller......the fuchsias even though we water and feed always look a bit wizened....not healthy like last year, the plants to look really good here are roses, and they've been amazing...:o)

I notice, too, Janey, that the Fuchsias don't seem to be as good as last year! The plants in my hanging baskets are from last year & haven't been moved - they overwintered in their baskets. They started off alright & I was very pleased at their progress but lately they are not doing so well & I've been feeding them for the last 2 weeks but I don't see any improvement.
My 2 standard Beacon Fuchsias started off very well indeed & again I was very pleased about this but they have stopped growing & one is dying. I may have overwatered it. A couple of times I've left it to dry out to the point where the leaves began to wilt before watering again. It seemed to be recovering but this last week it has had the appearance of being on its last "legs".
Probably the heat of the last weeks has got to them. They do prefer a cooler, more humid environment which usually corresponds to the "normal" British summer. That's probably why they did better last summer!
